- [00:00:06.180]My name's Amanda Coleman.
- [00:00:07.620]I am going to be a senior this upcoming year
- [00:00:10.380]as a dietetics major.
- [00:00:12.700]My name's Katy Reckware.
- [00:00:14.012]I'm going to be a senior and I'm a nutrition, exercise,
- [00:00:16.300]and health science major.
- [00:00:18.000]My name is Tara Smith.
- [00:00:19.900]I'm going to be a junior at UNL.
- [00:00:22.200]My major is nutrition, exercise, and health science
- [00:00:24.259]as well as dietetics.
- [00:00:25.960]I'm Cassie Brown and I'm a senior dietetics major also.
- [00:00:29.520]Well we got around (laughs)
- [00:00:32.459]each town by car.
- [00:00:34.697]We had three different cars,
- [00:00:36.546]five people to a car including the driver.
- [00:00:39.236]The scenery was always gorgeous,
- [00:00:40.836]always something to look at.
- [00:00:43.507]Perhaps the cattle in the road (laughs)
- [00:00:45.977]and the donkeys and stuff
- [00:00:47.337]were a little annoying, pretty abrupt stops,
- [00:00:50.490]but it's all part of the adventure.
- [00:00:53.991]But I feel like all of the cars have gotten
- [00:00:56.071]really, really close.
- [00:00:58.261]We've created some great bonds
- [00:01:00.015]and I think leaving is going to be kind of tough.
- [00:01:03.315]Really emotional, yeah.
- [00:01:05.555]Right now we are in Arba Minch, Ethiopia.
- [00:01:09.097]Some of the animals that we've seen are crocodiles,
- [00:01:12.094]hippos, all kinds of birds,
- [00:01:15.386]monkeys, baboons,
- [00:01:17.957]wart hogs and lots of, obviously, cattle,
- [00:01:22.322]sheep, goats, everywhere,
- [00:01:24.980]and the last couple days we've got to see
- [00:01:27.539]a couple different tribes in the area.
- [00:01:29.574]The mercy tribe, also the hammer
- [00:01:32.725]and it was really fun and interesting to see their culture
- [00:01:35.717]and the way they live and how they dress.
- [00:01:38.294]The tribes are awesome (laughs).
- [00:01:40.774]Some of the tribes we saw had the lip discs,
- [00:01:43.394]but everyone kind of knows about
- [00:01:45.974]and then the mercy tribe.
- [00:01:47.614]And another one had the
- [00:01:49.874]clay in their hair (mumbles).
- [00:01:53.545]It was really cool.
- [00:01:54.697]It was kind of like one of those moments
- [00:01:56.087]in life that you just weren't expecting
- [00:01:59.919]to be able to ever see the things that we saw,
- [00:02:02.567]the tribes like we did.
- [00:02:04.518]It's like you see them on TV
- [00:02:05.848]and National Geographic and stuff all the time,
- [00:02:08.507]but maybe I should get to see it in person.
- [00:02:10.587]It's amazing.
- [00:02:11.399]Especially the mercy tribe with the lip discs.
- [00:02:13.387]We even got to buy some to take home.
- [00:02:17.107]Some of them took them out of their lips
- [00:02:19.248]for us and they sold them to us like that
- [00:02:22.230]and that was amazing.
- [00:02:24.987]Educationally, we have gotten to visit
- [00:02:27.369]Walla University and Hawassa University
- [00:02:30.423]and work with the students there
- [00:02:32.143]and going into villages and learning about the nutrition
- [00:02:36.143]and culture and way of life in the rural households
- [00:02:39.993]around Ethiopia.
- [00:02:41.462]When we went to the tribes and stuff
- [00:02:42.823]it was fun interacting with them
- [00:02:44.543]just by gestures.
- [00:02:48.993]It was a lot of fun.
- [00:02:50.568]Most of them speak English though.
- [00:02:53.074]Relating to them with little things
- [00:02:54.444]like jewelry and something like that
- [00:02:56.604]was really cool as well.
- [00:02:58.524]The people have been amazing.
- [00:02:59.824]They are so nice everywhere.
- [00:03:02.293]Very welcoming,
- [00:03:03.663]always want to greet you with a smile
- [00:03:09.154]and they shake your hand (laughs).
- [00:03:11.034]I'm honored to be called (mumbles) (laughs).
- [00:03:15.979]They're so nice.
- [00:03:17.561]I've never met a more kind group of people.
- [00:03:20.961]The whole population in general.
- [00:03:22.441]It's not just a few people, it's everybody.
- [00:03:24.861]Their culture, their way of life,
- [00:03:26.561]it's what they know.
- [00:03:27.621]Everyone is just willing to help everyone out.
- [00:03:30.591]The markets can be a little crazy.
- [00:03:33.061]The first one we went to was Hike Market
- [00:03:35.101]and that was, I think, a little overwhelming
- [00:03:36.603]cause that was the biggest one I want to say
- [00:03:38.581]that we went to.
- [00:03:40.021]And you just have to be careful of your things
- [00:03:42.981]and where you're stepping and where the animals
- [00:03:45.389]are flying in from,
- [00:03:48.339]but it's really interesting to see everything,
- [00:03:51.309]because we just go to the grocery store,
- [00:03:53.249]but they have all their things at the market.
- [00:03:56.579]Watching them interact with one another
- [00:03:58.429]was really cool I thought and how they bargain
- [00:04:01.109]and go back and forth.
- [00:04:04.139]You have to definitely bargain with them
- [00:04:05.949]because they'll bump the prices up
- [00:04:08.229]at least twice as much probably
- [00:04:10.069]cause we're MGs, which means foreigner.
- [00:04:13.319]It's going to be really cool bringing home everything
- [00:04:15.589]to show our families because it's been affordable
- [00:04:18.269]to buy all of the handmade things here.
- [00:04:20.789]Another thing I thought was interesting
- [00:04:22.259]is each town or each city that we've been in
- [00:04:24.269]there's always something unique
- [00:04:25.649]with that town or city.
- [00:04:27.270]So you kind of just say oh I'm going to buy this
- [00:04:29.429]and then that's it.
- [00:04:30.569]When you go to another town
- [00:04:31.489]it's always something new
- [00:04:32.829]and they're so beautiful.
- [00:04:35.129]The Ethiopian food is still really great.
- [00:04:37.389]It's seasoned really well and the spices are nice,
- [00:04:39.728]but it's just a little overwhelming
- [00:04:42.879]and you get tired of it.
- [00:04:44.069]You just want some American food.
- [00:04:46.988]The hotels have been really, really nice.
- [00:04:49.379]Especially like the ones that we've been staying at
- [00:04:51.748]for our little vacation days between breaks.
- [00:04:54.378]That's been amazing.
- [00:04:56.028]Like right now, we're looking at
- [00:04:58.328]the best view in life (laughs).
- [00:05:01.508]Before I came on this trip
- [00:05:04.820]my family and I had so many misconceptions about Africa.
- [00:05:08.228]You know, I was a little scared to go
- [00:05:09.578]and first trip out on my own,
- [00:05:12.440]but after I've been here, I felt so safe the entire time.
- [00:05:16.430]We would never go anywhere that we would feel unsafe
- [00:05:20.230]and I think the only thing, it's just a little overwhelming
- [00:05:23.828]maybe at the markets when everyone comes around
- [00:05:26.908]to see all the foreigners and they're just so interested
- [00:05:30.708]in seeing such different people.
- [00:05:33.478]The same with my family.
- [00:05:34.767]they also had a lot of misconceptions
- [00:05:36.207]and they thought that, you know,
- [00:05:38.167]whether they're going to make it back
- [00:05:39.207]or something like that,
- [00:05:40.827]but yeah, when I got here it was the complete opposite
- [00:05:43.967]and now when I go back I'm definitely
- [00:05:45.947]going to be putting people in their place
- [00:05:47.517]if they have anything bad to say about Ethiopia
- [00:05:49.696]or Africa in general.
- [00:05:51.516]And it's been really, really awesome
- [00:05:53.776]getting to interact with all the people around here.
- [00:05:56.546]They're all so nice.
- [00:05:58.296]I would absolutely love to do another study abroad program
- [00:06:01.476]through UNL or CEHS.
- [00:06:04.456]The faculty leaders are amazing and it's been such
- [00:06:06.676]a great experience going with other students from UNL.
- [00:06:09.816]You just become really close with them
- [00:06:11.156]and you're going to have really great friends
- [00:06:13.096]when you go home too.
- [00:06:14.556](upbeat music)
