- [00:00:07.872]At Nebraska, we're planting a tree.
- [00:00:11.487]We're sinking roots in the ground
- [00:00:13.386]and growing strong branches.
- [00:00:16.042]It's our investment in the future.
- [00:00:18.921](upbeat music)
- [00:00:22.005]It's my great pleasure to welcome you today
- [00:00:24.169]as we celebrate a milestone in the life
- [00:00:26.101]of Nebraska Innovation Campus.
- [00:00:28.309]We ready?
- [00:00:29.428]Go!
- [00:00:32.297](electrical buzzing)
- [00:00:34.517](cheering and applause)
- [00:00:37.823]Nebraska Innovation Campus
- [00:00:39.722]transforms ideas into global innovation.
- [00:00:43.306]A state of the art greenhouse provides a
- [00:00:45.343]unique environment where research
- [00:00:47.764]leads to food for the future.
- [00:00:50.260]So we can do a lot more, very very quickly.
- [00:00:52.958]And more precisely than we could without such a system.
- [00:00:56.425]Research labs, pilot plants, and classrooms
- [00:00:59.358]at the Food Innovation Center
- [00:01:00.777]provide fertile ground for research solutions.
- [00:01:03.763]It's a place to address food safety challenges
- [00:01:07.101]and work with business to bring
- [00:01:09.011]new products to the table.
- [00:01:12.051]Working with the product developers,
- [00:01:13.971]with the faculty that is doing
- [00:01:16.691]applied research, it attracts companies.
- [00:01:19.698]Private businesses and start-ups enjoy
- [00:01:22.280]close proximity to faculty and students at the
- [00:01:25.095]University of Nebraska- Lincoln.
- [00:01:27.421]Those partnerships, and a vision of the future,
- [00:01:30.098]set the stage for success.
- [00:01:32.498]We believe the entire state of Nebraska will
- [00:01:34.343]benefit from Nebraska Innovation Campus.
- [00:01:37.095]We hope it will build economic growth for the state.
- [00:01:40.497]But will also assist our students and faculty
- [00:01:43.163]and improve our research profiles.
- [00:01:46.139](upbeat music)
- [00:01:55.557]In a dangerous world, UNL research
- [00:01:57.701]looks for ways to keep our country safe.
- [00:02:00.699]Projects range from protecting essential facilities
- [00:02:03.856]from nuclear attack to understanding the political
- [00:02:06.874]reasons behind international conflict.
- [00:02:09.957]Research crosses disciplines including virology,
- [00:02:12.676]political science, engineering, and space law.
- [00:02:16.015]As UNL's Associate Vice Chancellor for Research,
- [00:02:19.076]Bill Charlton works with faculty and sponsors
- [00:02:21.572]on defense related projects.
- [00:02:23.897]Charlton is also Research Director for the
- [00:02:25.892]National Strategic Research Institute,
- [00:02:28.398]a University of Nebraska partnership
- [00:02:30.915]with the U.S. Strategic Command
- [00:02:32.771]and the Department of Defense.
- [00:02:34.915]Our job is to try and keep really really bad things
- [00:02:37.283]from happening.
- [00:02:38.607]So chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear weapon
- [00:02:41.721]attacks within or outside The United States.
- [00:02:44.525]So The University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:02:46.806]bringing to bear its research capabilities can help
- [00:02:49.526]keep those events from ever occurring and help protect
- [00:02:51.446]our society and help make it a more peaceful
- [00:02:52.907]world for us to live in.
- [00:02:56.849](upbeat music)
- [00:03:01.446]Nebraska research harnesses the power
- [00:03:03.887]of the Sun with new solar cell materials
- [00:03:06.704]and fabrication methods.
- [00:03:08.645]With funding from the U.S. Department of Energy
- [00:03:10.981]and The National Science Foundation,
- [00:03:12.965]UNL engineer Jinsong Huang
- [00:03:15.098]creates more efficient, and less expensive solar cells.
- [00:03:19.322]We want to try to find alternative energy source
- [00:03:23.024]to replace existing energy to basically
- [00:03:27.823]to keep a sustainable future
- [00:03:31.982]for this world.
- [00:03:33.582]Turning sorghum into bio-fuel is the goal
- [00:03:36.163]for Daniel Schactman.
- [00:03:37.977]He leads a team of researchers from nine institutions
- [00:03:40.942]funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.
- [00:03:43.736]These plants will create new opportunities
- [00:03:47.896]for producing fuel through this bio-economy.
- [00:03:51.522]And it also can have a new niche for what
- [00:03:54.861]Nebraska farmers can produce.
- [00:03:59.509]Climate change is expected to impact
- [00:04:01.196]agriculture and land use.
- [00:04:03.032]And that, in turn, affects ground water.
- [00:04:05.911]A team of researchers from engineering,
- [00:04:08.151]economics and community and regional planning,
- [00:04:10.690]studies how the agricultural system
- [00:04:12.887]will respond to climate change.
- [00:04:15.490]So we might see intensification of agriculture.
- [00:04:17.932]And we want to look at how that
- [00:04:19.915]shift in land use might affect groundwater.
- [00:04:24.012]Interdisciplinary work raises questions
- [00:04:26.572]that foster creativity and looking at things in new ways.
- [00:04:31.798](upbeat music)
- [00:04:37.109]Computer and electronic technology
- [00:04:39.050]becomes smaller, faster, more powerful.
- [00:04:42.549]Nebraska is a leader in the nano materials research needed
- [00:04:45.727]to make improvements.

- [00:04:51.178]of excellence at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:04:54.741]For the third time, Nebraska's
- [00:04:56.277]Materials Research Science and Engineering Center
- [00:04:59.295]earns a grant from the National Science Foundation
- [00:05:02.122]to continue its work.
- [00:05:04.159]It's extremely prestigious for University of Nebraska
- [00:05:06.943]to be on that map.
- [00:05:09.739]At the Cern Laboratory in Switzerland,
- [00:05:12.084]the world's largest atom smasher helps explain
- [00:05:14.964]the mysteries of the universe.
- [00:05:17.203]Part of the experiment is under construction
- [00:05:19.465]at Nebraska.
- [00:05:21.128]It's pretty cutting edge stuff and very exciting.
- [00:05:24.168]Aaron Dominguez leads a team of scientists
- [00:05:26.643]from nine U.S. universities in improving a detector
- [00:05:30.067]that takes a picture of the particle collisions
- [00:05:32.487]in the Large Hadron Collider.
- [00:05:34.727]The new device is more sensitive and takes
- [00:05:36.647]40 million images a second.
- [00:05:39.143]They're able to reconstruct a little track of where
- [00:05:41.223]the particles went.
- [00:05:42.503]And figure out exactly what was the kernel.
- [00:05:44.540]What was happening deep inside of this
- [00:05:47.324]particle collision.
- [00:05:49.126]UNL is now home to a regional research
- [00:05:51.559]data center funded by the National Science Foundation
- [00:05:54.385]and The Census Bureau.
- [00:05:56.038]Restricted federal data, made available through the center
- [00:05:58.822]advances faculty research.
- [00:06:01.105]It's a wonderful opportunity for our researchers.
- [00:06:04.518]It's a veritable data gold mine.
- [00:06:08.015]Our country benefits from social
- [00:06:09.647]and behavioral research in areas that include
- [00:06:12.304]children and families, education, and the economy.
- [00:06:15.941]A new consortium elevates UNL's research capacity
- [00:06:19.226]by building a strong research and referral network,
- [00:06:21.818]identifying and coordinating funding opportunities,
- [00:06:25.006]mentoring new faculty, and facilitating collaboration.
- [00:06:29.263]What we're going to be doing is strengthening
- [00:06:30.937]all of the operations around campus with this consortium.
- [00:06:33.881]Bringing people together.
- [00:06:35.684]And frankly, just growing the research base,
- [00:06:38.585]being successful in a very competitive environment.
- [00:06:44.031](upbeat music)
- [00:06:50.947]Get set!
- [00:06:52.632]Go!
- [00:06:53.956]A Department of Defense funded project
- [00:06:55.875]aims to ensure quality childcare for military families
- [00:06:59.353]who don't live on a military installation.
- [00:07:02.350]We partner with the early childhood entities
- [00:07:04.451]within that state.
- [00:07:05.592]And we provide training and technical assistance.
- [00:07:07.875]From cancer to Alzheimer's,
- [00:07:09.848]nearly all human disease originates from
- [00:07:12.376]molecular interactions occurring throughout the body.
- [00:07:15.853]With a grant from the National Institutes of Health,
- [00:07:18.711]UNL expands its efforts to combat and treat diseases
- [00:07:22.775]by preparing more doctoral students.
- [00:07:26.177]The goal of it is to connect grad students
- [00:07:28.354]across disciplines and to build your tool set,
- [00:07:30.796]your skill sets to strengthen your research.
- [00:07:32.897]It's nationally peer reviewed.
- [00:07:34.646]It's very prestigious to have these awarded.
- [00:07:37.249]They are not that many of them in the country.
- [00:07:39.350]So it's a really huge deal for UNL to have such
- [00:07:41.611]a strong cohort of faculty and students
- [00:07:43.990]that we have merited this award from our peers.
- [00:07:48.107]Excavation records of an ancient

- [00:08:11.092]provides access to scholars around the world.
- [00:08:14.953]We've created access, but now we've brought
- [00:08:16.873]the information together in a relational database format
- [00:08:19.796]that allows us to make sense of that information.
- [00:08:22.537]More than a third of Americans are obese.

- [00:09:03.251]to explore how disease spreads.
- [00:09:05.778]We really think we can make a difference in
- [00:09:07.794]the rates of infection in rural areas.
- [00:09:11.857]That's a great job.
- [00:09:12.957]When you feel like you can make an important difference
- [00:09:16.210]in ordinary lives.
- [00:09:18.439](upbeat music)
