The parched fields, dying orchards, disappearing reservoirs and first-ever mandatory water restrictions during California's drought grabbed the nation's attention this year. But climate scientists at UNL's National Drought Mitigation Center have been training governments and institutions to plan and prepare for such disasters since 1995.

[00:00:10.667]mandating substantial water reduction

[00:00:17.407]around the world, and the National Drought
[00:00:19.778]Mitigation Center, at the University of Nebraska,
[00:00:22.431]Lincoln, is on the front lines.

[00:00:27.204]you know I see the whole are of drought management
[00:00:29.390]and drought strategies, drought monitoring
[00:00:31.446]as one that is just exploding.
[00:00:33.496]To deal wit the expanding threat,
[00:00:35.365]UNL gets funding from the National Oceanic
[00:00:37.868]and Atmospheric Administration.
[00:00:40.021]A new grant establishes the Drought Risk Management
[00:00:43.076]Research Center at Nebraska.
[00:00:45.462]It's going to enable additional research to be done at
[00:00:48.266]different levels, from the community level
[00:00:50.352]up to the state and national level.
[00:00:52.588]Being able to be prepared for the next drought
[00:00:55.759]that comes along, will hopefully reduce our empass
[00:00:58.846]to these future drought events.
[00:01:00.766]UNL's Drought Mitigation Center
[00:01:02.902]has long been at the forefront of efforts to prepare
[00:01:06.023]for drought, and manage its effects.
[00:01:08.810]The new grant recognizes Nebraska's leadership.
[00:01:12.198]We're involved with drought planning activities
[00:01:15.152]basically around the globe, and that's what's exciting
[00:01:17.855]to learn these lessons from various places,
[00:01:19.991]and then incorporate them as we work
[00:01:21.877]with officials.

[00:01:25.665]and prepare, so it can survive a global threat.
