More Partners Settle into Innovation Campus

Momentum abounds at Nebraska Innovation Campus as more UNL researchers, students and private partners settle into state-of-the-art facilities. Doors opened in mid-2015 at the much-anticipated Food Innovation Center and the Greenhouse Innovation Center, attracting new tenants and partnerships on the private-public research campus being developed adjacent to UNL.

[00:00:05.684]into the campus development since our groundbreaking,
[00:00:08.421]when here we are with 372,000 square feet constructed
[00:00:13.187]and about 250 people coming to work every day on campus.
[00:00:16.987]Everything you see here
[00:00:18.373]is a partnership between multiple entities.
[00:00:21.303]So the university, of course, is a major partner,
[00:00:24.982]the City of Lincoln is a partner,
[00:00:27.001]the State of Nebraska is a partner,
[00:00:29.059]and then our private developer, Tetrad Property Group,
[00:00:32.053]is a big partner, and then all of the companies
[00:00:35.172]that are starting to populate the campus.
[00:00:38.636]We're building a software and sensor platform
[00:00:41.145]for feedlot cattle.
[00:00:43.008]It's a ear tag sensor that sends bio-metric
[00:00:46.327]and behavioral readings up to a receiver
[00:00:49.257]and then we kind of send out health alerts
[00:00:51.259]and also track the overall health of the herd.
[00:00:54.003]The move to innovation campus for us, is important
[00:00:57.111]because it puts us amongst all this entrepreneurial,
[00:01:00.864]innovative type of activity.
[00:01:02.949]We're in the Greenhouse Innovation Center.
[00:01:05.165]These are state-of-the-art greenhouses
[00:01:06.944]employing LED greenhouse lights and the light spectrum
[00:01:11.350]is actually tuned in to what the plant actually needs.
[00:01:15.438]The Greenhouse Innovation Center was built
[00:01:17.200]around a unique piece of equipment.
[00:01:19.385]This system was envisioned by a group of faculty.
[00:01:22.981]This system has plants on conveyors
[00:01:26.170]moved around the greenhouse
[00:01:28.455]to nutrient water stations and then,
[00:01:31.421]at specific times, they move out of the greenhouse,
[00:01:34.815]into the attached head house
[00:01:36.531]and through high-resolution camera bays.
[00:01:39.122]There you can take measurements that are barely
[00:01:41.625]noticeable with naked eye.
[00:01:43.686]There's only a few facilities like this in the world;
[00:01:45.907]UNL is one of the first universities in the
[00:01:47.827]United States to have a facility like this.
[00:01:50.243]A system like this really
[00:01:51.916]accelerates our research, so we can
[00:01:53.960]do a lot more very, very quickly and more precisely
[00:01:57.918]than we could without such a system.
[00:02:00.035]We're in the Food Innovation Center.
[00:02:01.890]It's a 178,000 square foot complex.
[00:02:06.076]This is the most advanced and best facility
[00:02:09.115]that a food science department has in the country,
[00:02:11.564]and, in many cases, in the world:
[00:02:13.750]pilot plants, laboratories, teaching facilities.
[00:02:17.872]It is state-of-the-art and absolutely wonderful,
[00:02:20.657]great facilities, both in the product development lab,
[00:02:23.301]as well as everywhere on campus.
[00:02:25.327]By having the food processing center here,
[00:02:28.652]working with the product developers,
[00:02:30.867]with the faculty, that is doing applied research,
[00:02:35.060]it attracts companies.
[00:02:37.371]Well we're thrilled we have one international company
[00:02:39.830]that's already been announced, Food Dreams Made Real,
[00:02:43.337]their brand is Suji's Cuisine.
[00:02:45.381]New Tech Foods, is another great example
[00:02:48.782]of a company that's located here to do research.
[00:02:52.192]One of the benefits is, as we attract
[00:02:54.069]more and more companies, is jobs.
[00:02:56.919]This is creating employment, a name for the state.
[00:03:01.390]It helps the whole state prosper economically.
[00:03:04.236]The students of the university are a big winner,
[00:03:07.057]the faculty are a big winner, number one is the
[00:03:09.947]citizens of the State of Nebraska.
[00:03:12.290]They're investing in this campus for a brighter future.
