- [00:00:03.165]Hi I'm Donde Plowman. I'm here with Shawn Eichorst today
- [00:00:06.045]to talk about his new program, Shawn, that we've started.
- [00:00:08.850]Our master's program and intercollegiate
- [00:00:11.570]athletic administration. Thanks for being here.
- [00:00:14.002]Very excited to be with you today.
- [00:00:15.698]Shawn, can you say a little bit about how you
- [00:00:18.023]think the athletic director of the future is,
- [00:00:21.201]maybe has different characteristics than, perhaps,
- [00:00:23.921]in the past and how this program in your mind
- [00:00:26.311]contributes to that?
- [00:00:27.804]Well, you know, as the landscape and time evolves,
- [00:00:30.630]in almost every area of life, in athletics...
- [00:00:34.632]It's not only the athletic director position,
- [00:00:36.998]its sort of the whole enterprise.
- [00:00:39.353]We need to engage and continue
- [00:00:41.446]to stretch our legs in many areas and
- [00:00:44.290]certainly the expertise that a lot of folks near shop
- [00:00:48.573]bring to the table in business, we can all learn from.
- [00:00:53.115]Mmhmm.
- [00:00:53.977]And more importantly, those young aspiring
- [00:00:56.965]administrators out there, whether they want to be
- [00:00:59.005]an athletic director, whether they wanna be in
- [00:01:00.837]student services, academics, communications, finance.
- [00:01:05.048]All those other sorts of things.
- [00:01:06.296]They're looking for an opportunity to grow as well.
- [00:01:09.997]And it's competitive out there.
- [00:01:11.698]Yeah. RIght.
- [00:01:12.481]There are a number of schools that have
- [00:01:13.711]developed programs similar to the ones that--
- [00:01:15.202]--Mmhmm.
- [00:01:15.928]you and I have developed here at Nebraska.
- [00:01:17.807]But I think we're gonna deliver it in a really unique way
- [00:01:20.740]in the way that we have it set up.
- [00:01:22.521]Right.
- [00:01:23.311]To not only get in the classroom and be inspired
- [00:01:26.813]by folks who work in the business school,
- [00:01:29.697]but more importantly to get the practical side of athletics.
- [00:01:33.718]Oh yeah. Through the internship.
- [00:01:35.713]One of the things in talking to the faculty,
- [00:01:38.272]you were teaching these courses,
- [00:01:40.011]I've just been pretty amazed, and talking to you about
- [00:01:43.445]how complex this business of an athletic department is.
- [00:01:48.235]And so I'm hoping the program will help train people
- [00:01:51.989]who are a little bit better aware of the complexity
- [00:01:55.871]of the changing world of collegiate athletics, I guess.
- [00:02:00.980]I would agree, and I think again that
- [00:02:03.333]navigation of academics--
- [00:02:05.094]--Yeah.
- [00:02:06.018]Those young aspiring administrators that come up and
- [00:02:09.290]then seek a master's degree like the one that
- [00:02:11.658]we're providing understand how important it is,
- [00:02:15.124]that this is an academic endeavor.
- [00:02:16.875]Right.
- [00:02:17.600]We exist on this campus because of the academic side
- [00:02:21.000]of what we do, and so I think that that's an important--
- [00:02:23.805]--Yeah--
- [00:02:24.573]-piece of what we do.
- [00:02:26.205]And when I was coming up through the ranks,
- [00:02:29.127]a recovering lawyer as you know.
- [00:02:31.282](Donde laughs)
- [00:02:32.103]I was looking for ways to learn more about being a better
- [00:02:35.484]athletic administrator, and there wasn't much out there.
- [00:02:37.738]Yeah.
- [00:02:38.678]You know, 15 years ago.
- [00:02:40.027]So I'm really excited to be able to return--
- [00:02:42.608]--Yeah.
- [00:02:44.229]what I've learned to our profession.
- [00:02:48.134]It's such a really neat area at our university.
- [00:02:52.698]Oh.
- [00:02:53.347]And that's why we need the best--
- [00:02:55.260]--Right--
- [00:02:55.953]-working, not only in your area, but in my area.
- [00:02:59.046]Sure.
- [00:02:59.624]And hopefully we're training that next, an administrator.
- [00:03:01.945]I'm excited I think we're off to a good start.
- [00:03:04.132]We are.
- [00:03:04.868]Great. Shawn thanks so much for taking the time
- [00:03:07.172]to be here today and talking a little bit more about
- [00:03:08.814]what we've started. I really appreciate it.
- [00:03:11.043]Always a pleasure.
- [00:03:12.142]OK. Great. Thanks so much.
- [00:03:13.923]Thank you.
- [00:03:15.118](energetic music)
