- [00:00:16.208]I'm Wheeler Winston Dixon. This is Frame By Frame.
- [00:00:18.666]The DC universe... will it work?
- [00:00:21.467]Well, we have Batman vs Superman and after that Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman
- [00:00:26.882]But then they're going to start rolling out films every single year.
- [00:00:30.267]They're going to have Justice League Part One, the Flash, Aquaman
- [00:00:34.540]and Shazam, which is really Captain Marvel, which they got the rights to a long time ago and renamed "Shazam."
- [00:00:40.345]They're going to try Cyborg, and then down the line in 2020,
- [00:00:44.183]they're going to do another Green Lantern movie, which hopefully will be an improvement on the first one.
- [00:00:49.644]FEAR IS WHAT STOPS YOU AND MAKES YOU WEAK.
- [00:00:54.242]The DC universe films are trying to shape up as a real oppositional force to Marvel,
- [00:00:59.072]But Marvel is such a juggernaut at Comic Con
- [00:01:02.044]And now that Disney has bought the rights to the Star Wars franchise, it's going to be a very formidible field to compete with.
- [00:01:09.997]But the one thing that really strikes me is how comic book movies have moved to the center of film making and film going experiences for audiences.
- [00:01:19.308]As more and more people are staying home and watching things like Game of Thrones, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black...
- [00:01:27.145]Intimate long-form shows that have long story arcs... what drags people now into the theaters is spectacle, and comic book movies certainly offer that.
- [00:01:35.678]So we have the Star Wars franchise. We have the DC universe, and we have the Marvel universe
- [00:01:40.763]all competing for massive screen time in the center, and the question is, of course, which one is going to dominate?
- [00:01:46.940]The Marvel people have an enormous start, but if Disney can pump out a Star Wars film, one a year, every year for the next 15 years,
- [00:01:55.670]and keep many of the original cast members together, I think they've got a real shot to create an enormously effective new franchise, which is what they're going to do.
- [00:02:04.436]And also I think they're going to take it into a new direction, which is going to be more inclusive and less marginalizing than the earlier films were.
- [00:02:12.876]Of course, all of these movies come from the 1940s serials, which were once shown on Saturday mornings for children.
- [00:02:21.756]But now they're for everyone, and they're everywhere at a multiplex near you.
- [00:02:27.807]I'm Wheeler Winston Dixon, and this is Frame By Frame.
