- [00:00:01.428]We live in a dark world of human trafficking,
- [00:00:03.868]such as child sex, prostitution, slave labor, and
- [00:00:06.554]even organ and tissue sales.
- [00:00:08.473]But the media can shine light on the darkness.

- [00:00:13.801]A new class at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:16.673]gives students a deeper awareness of injustice around the world.
- [00:00:20.842]The concept came from Maria Marron, dean of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications.
- [00:00:26.033]Sriyani Tidball teaches "Social Justice, Human Rights and the Media."
- [00:00:30.250]She's been an activist against human trafficking in the
- [00:00:32.745]U.S. and Sri Lanka.
- [00:00:34.377]She also organizes UNL's annual international research conference
- [00:00:38.618]on human trafficking.
- [00:00:40.361]The class was created too late to be included in the annual course catalog,
- [00:00:44.105]but registrations soon exceeded the 120-seat capacity of the
- [00:00:47.737]auditorium a the College of Journalism and Mass Communications.
- [00:00:50.950]After the first meeting, more than 20 students stood in line
- [00:00:53.538]to thank Tidball for creating the class.
- [00:00:56.388]I've been teaching for eight years and nobody
- [00:00:57.987]lines up to say thanks.
- [00:01:00.828]I really know that students really want to be a part of the change
- [00:01:05.140]they want to see today.
- [00:01:06.907]I just see such true passion among young people who are saying
- [00:01:13.380]we're tired of injustice, is there any way we can
- [00:01:16.059]be a part of making a change.
- [00:01:18.532]Sydney Heineman is interested in social justice and government.
- [00:01:22.059]She says members of the Millennial generation have to be
- [00:01:24.779]prepared to solve the world's problems.
- [00:01:27.558]We're gonna be the new generation.
- [00:01:28.820]We really need to know about all the problems in America as
- [00:01:33.172]well as the other countries around the world.
- [00:01:35.484]In addition to human trafficking, Tidball plans to address other human rights
- [00:01:39.902]issues, including injustices faced by American Indians, African Americans and immigrants.
- [00:01:45.767]I have to to tell you, I have got totally stoked about teaching this class.
- [00:01:49.694]Because as I was working on it, I realized this is my dream,
- [00:01:53.494]to be able to talk to many people about these issues.
- [00:01:57.158]Especially people who choose to come here because they want to
- [00:01:59.950]know about it.
- [00:02:01.504]At first I was a little skeptical because it is such a touchy subject
- [00:02:04.999]with a lot of people and so awkward to talk about.
- [00:02:07.566]Wahl says Tidball's passion ignites his interest in social justice.
- [00:02:12.058]He worries about the future.
- [00:02:14.138]The upcoming generation, the people still in high school, people still in middle school,
- [00:02:18.274]I feel like we're setting it up for them to make it a better
- [00:02:21.617]United States, better world in general.
- [00:02:25.171]It's something people need to see and need to hear about.
- [00:02:27.475]It's definitely the journalists' role to show the world,
- [00:02:30.187]to tell the people what is going on.
- [00:02:33.883]I really do want to use my power to use my power to really change the world if I can.
- [00:02:39.545][music]
