- [00:00:02.083]The Center for Brain Biology and Behavior, or CB3 at Nebraska
- [00:00:06.883]helps unravel the secrets of the brain.
- [00:00:10.219]We know very little about the brain, it's critical to everything and yet we have no information
- [00:00:15.586]about how it really works.
- [00:00:17.531]Located in Memorial Stadium, the facility brings together researchers and state of the art equipment
- [00:00:23.331]under one roof.
- [00:00:25.778]I think the center is a really very exciting step forward in the study of
- [00:00:29.634]not only brain development but also what happens when a brain malfunctions.
- [00:00:35.163]A bridge connecting CB3 with the Nebraska Athletic Performance Lab is symbolic of the
- [00:00:40.802]unique partnership between academics and athletics.
- [00:00:45.122]No other university in the nation conducts research this way.
- [00:00:49.210]We have projects that entail a number of
- [00:00:50.811]different aspects of brain function from neuroimaging
- [00:00:54.115]to balance to genetics and a wide variety of other areas.
- [00:00:57.811]Faculty from twenty disciplines work in 46 research behavioral test rooms
- [00:01:02.763]collaborating on projects that tackle challenges such as brain injury, addiction and depression.
- [00:01:10.827]In the magnetic resonance imaging suite, three technologies are put to use.
- [00:01:16.619]Functional MRI captures high resolution pictures of the brain's internal structure and information flow.
- [00:01:23.011]Electroencephalography or EEG measures brain neuroelectrical activity,
- [00:01:28.723]and a tracking device records eye movements.
- [00:01:32.156]So when you put all three together, that's a pretty unique, exciting opportunity.
- [00:01:37.427]The ability to collect data in a wide range of areas opens up new possibilities for collaborative
- [00:01:42.763]research projects.
- [00:01:44.690][music, cheering]
- [00:01:46.571]Hard hits on the field can result in concussions.
- [00:01:49.995]In coordination with the Nebraska athletic department, CB3
- [00:01:54.917]conducts behavior testing of athletes before and after concussion
- [00:01:58.205]and tracks recovery over time.
- [00:02:01.175]Nebraska also leads a Big Ten, Ivy League initiative dedicated to the study of
- [00:02:06.806]traumatic brain injuries and sports related concussion.
- [00:02:10.209]I would suspect that within two to three years, we will have a biomarker for concussion
- [00:02:15.291]that will help us to say, "yes, that's definitely a concussion."
- [00:02:17.724]More information about biomarkers, more information about treatment,
- [00:02:21.839]more information about recovery.
- [00:02:24.615]Researchers have access to other shared facilities and equipment
- [00:02:29.382]to record electrical activity produced by the brain in response to a stimulus.
- [00:02:34.303]To measure biomarkers that indicate a specific condition such as cortisol, a hormone that is
- [00:02:40.033]a marker of stress.
- [00:02:41.697]To track eye movements that help investigate issues related to visual attention,
- [00:02:46.257]memory and perception.
- [00:02:47.992]We have access to a variety of different methods, shared lab space, and access to the MRI equipment.
- [00:02:55.049]We've integrated eye tracking into the fMRI and EEG systems.
- [00:02:59.769]We've used eye tracking with the physiological systems in the political science lab.
- [00:03:04.538]So it's really given us the opportunity to bring all these different areas of research together.
- [00:03:09.513][Point to where you think the toy is ]
- [00:03:12.016]Research at CB3 benefits a range of ages, from infants and toddlers
- [00:03:16.497]to adults and the elderly.
- [00:03:18.777]Researchers study how differences in children's temperaments affect sleep
- [00:03:22.744]habits and behaviorâŚ
- [00:03:24.768]How experiences influence the development of memory and attention.
- [00:03:28.937]Problems with balance with dizziness among the elderly or those with a brain injury.
- [00:03:34.073]We have so many experts in different disciplines
- [00:03:36.979]coming together and able to address a research question from all different angles.
- [00:03:42.096]It's all these different departments coming together in one space.
- [00:03:45.961]And that's allowed for some very collaborative
- [00:03:49.465]research that is different than what's being done elsewhere.
- [00:03:54.601]CB3 helps researchers dig deep into how we form political opinions,
- [00:03:59.585]or why adults react emotionally in different ways.
- [00:04:03.177]To really understand what's going on inside people
- [00:04:04.993]and why these inner workings lead people to
- [00:04:08.202]very different political conclusions.
- [00:04:10.105]And they wouldn't necessarily report feeling
- [00:04:12.480]emotionally reactive but their brain is telling
- [00:04:14.608]us something different.
- [00:04:16.529]What influences the choices we make?
- [00:04:18.911]Researchers study how cognitive processes and hormones affect decision making.
- [00:04:24.364]One of the types of decisions that I'm
- [00:04:26.041]most interested in is impulsive decision making.
- [00:04:28.400]Understanding, I think, the cognitive processes that underly our decision making can
- [00:04:33.481]help us make better decisions.
- [00:04:35.753]CB3 paves the way for solutions to challenging problems.
- [00:04:41.121]Improving functionality for preterm infants and stroke victims,
- [00:04:45.001]or breaking the cycle of addiction.
- [00:04:48.129]Understanding how genetic differences
- [00:04:50.625]between people influence their tendencies to
- [00:04:55.209]engage in health risk behaviors.
- [00:04:57.968]To find an application that will improve the well-being
- [00:05:01.577]for human care and human function.
- [00:05:06.737]In addition to research, CB3 provides an important training ground for the next generation of
- [00:05:12.233]professionals and scientists.
- [00:05:14.617]They get to have hands on experiences in the lab.
- [00:05:17.097]The ability to participate in research projects
- [00:05:20.273]that are multi-method and multi-disciplinary.
- [00:05:23.489]Solving the mysteries of the brain is the goal at CB3.
- [00:05:28.216]It's unique. It's innovative.
- [00:05:31.304]It's forward thinking and it's state of the art.
- [00:05:34.121]Welcome to the Center for Brain Biology and Behavior.
- [00:05:37.537]Only at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
