- [00:00:02.755]A study of health literacy among high school students
- [00:00:05.787]could lead to curriculum changes.
- [00:00:08.331]The project is a collaboration between Lincoln Public
- [00:00:11.107]Schools and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln
- [00:00:13.995]Academy for Child and Family Well Being.
- [00:00:17.164]Health literacy is the ability to access valid health
- [00:00:21.502]information and to use that to make responsible
- [00:00:24.661]health decisions.
- [00:00:26.166]Results of the study suggest in general, students are
- [00:00:29.286]health literate in the areas covered under the health
- [00:00:31.606]class curriculum, but the findings demonstrated
- [00:00:34.686]a significantly lower level of health literacy among
- [00:00:38.030]students with disabilities.
- [00:00:40.158]The risk of limited health literacy was 128% higher
- [00:00:45.300]for students in special education.
- [00:00:47.837]There's a big difference between these two groups,
- [00:00:51.052]these two populations. The people with disabilities
- [00:00:54.371]having a little bit more challenge actually significant
- [00:00:56.804]compared to their peers in their ability to apply
- [00:01:01.009]that information and just in their general satisfaction
- [00:01:03.641]of their overall health.
- [00:01:06.002]Their feelings of wellness.
- [00:01:08.163]The study also identified weaknesses in areas
- [00:01:11.306]not currently covered in the health curriculum.
- [00:01:14.129]For example, students didn't know how to get
- [00:01:16.362]health insurance or make their own appointments with
- [00:01:18.954]a doctor or dentist.
- [00:01:20.362]We have already shared this information with the high
- [00:01:22.545]school health teachers who participated in the study
- [00:01:25.153]and our curriculum committee in health education will
- [00:01:28.497]also take a look at the results to see if maybe we
- [00:01:30.803]should make some adjustments in our curriculum.
- [00:01:33.121]The project is directed by Alex Trout, Co-Director of
- [00:01:36.426]the Academy for Child and Family Well Being.
- [00:01:39.218]This is really important to finding out lots of
- [00:01:41.002]information that will hopefully benefit youth, the
- [00:01:44.233]schools, all of us.
