- [00:00:05.062]Tell me something about yourself.
- [00:00:07.082]Sure, my name is Haley Oser.
- [00:00:09.442]I'm from Denver, Colorado,
- [00:00:11.002]born and raised.
- [00:00:12.802]I moved around a little bit when I was young,
- [00:00:14.562]but made it back to Colorado
- [00:00:16.622]in my young adulthood,
- [00:00:18.342]where I decided I want to go back to school.
- [00:00:21.442]I wanted to go back to college
- [00:00:24.239]and learn more, essentially.
- [00:00:27.242]So, I ended up going to the Metropolitan
- [00:00:29.947]State University of Denver.
- [00:00:32.267]There I received my Bachelor's of Science degree
- [00:00:34.627]in biology, and I had an emphasis in botany,
- [00:00:38.487]because I love plants.
- [00:00:40.807]I went to undergrad there.
- [00:00:43.127]I received my degree.
- [00:00:45.047]After my degree, I always wanted
- [00:00:46.487]to learn more and find out new things,
- [00:00:50.947]and continue this educational journey.
- [00:00:54.227]But, I couldn't find exactly where I wanted to go,
- [00:00:58.407]or what I wanted to do,
- [00:00:59.827]so I worked for a little while
- [00:01:00.947]right after my undergraduate degree.
- [00:01:03.447]Haley, why did you come to UNL
- [00:01:04.807]in the DPH program?
- [00:01:07.027]I came here because after my undergraduate degree
- [00:01:10.592]I couldn't find exactly where I wanted to go
- [00:01:12.812]or what I wanted to do,
- [00:01:14.252]as far as your traditional master's or Ph.D.-based
- [00:01:17.992]educational options.
- [00:01:21.892]I worked for a while right after undergrad,
- [00:01:24.792]and I didn't know for sure what I was gonna do,
- [00:01:27.652]or where I was gonna go.
- [00:01:29.401]I didn't know what my options were.
- [00:01:32.281]My undergraduate mentor referred me
- [00:01:34.381]to the Doctorate of Plant Health program.
- [00:01:37.061]For me, it was an excellent option
- [00:01:39.581]that wasn't your traditional master's
- [00:01:41.221]and Ph.D., (clears throat) excuse me,
- [00:01:43.833]research-based type of program.
- [00:01:46.313]I wanted to learn everything that was involved
- [00:01:48.153]in the whole interdisciplinary,
- [00:01:51.593]the disciplinary action,
- [00:01:52.633]everything involved in the plant health system,
- [00:01:55.433]because in my undergrad,
- [00:01:56.593]I understood that it wasn't just the plants that I loved,
- [00:01:59.213]but it's the soil that sustains them.
- [00:02:02.193]And there's pests and agriculture,
- [00:02:03.993]so I wanted to know about pollinators and pests
- [00:02:06.513]for insects and different things.
- [00:02:09.713]When I found this program, it was like,
- [00:02:11.213]oh my gosh, I can continue my education.
- [00:02:13.453]It is another option.
- [00:02:14.853]It is not your traditional options
- [00:02:16.893]that you would normally have.
- [00:02:19.073]That's why I decided to come here.
- [00:02:20.533]I thought that it was really great.
- [00:02:21.733]Haley, what do you want to do
- [00:02:22.733]with your DPH degree?
- [00:02:25.053]With my DPH degree, I am hoping to work
- [00:02:27.888]with people that are growing food.
- [00:02:31.068]I hope to work with them to find
- [00:02:32.468]sustainable options
- [00:02:34.808]within their cropping systems,
- [00:02:36.648]so that we can have
- [00:02:37.768]better resource management in the future,
- [00:02:39.928]because we're going to need to have
- [00:02:41.808]better resource management
- [00:02:43.228]and sustainability in our food systems.
