[00:00:26.672]Dr. Hong wants to help teachers bring science to life.
[00:00:30.520]Some of the goals that I have for my research is to
[00:00:33.784]build competence in preservice and in-service early
[00:00:37.176]childhood teachers so that they can teach science concepts,
[00:00:40.560]vocabulary and problem solving skills to
[00:00:43.192]young children in the classroom.

[00:00:47.416]Science can feel intimidating for teachers and add another
[00:00:50.696]responsibility to a busy day.
[00:00:53.608]But finding science in every day life doesn't have to be
[00:00:56.592]complicated or burdensome.
[00:00:59.008]I don't have to be the expert, I don't have to have all the answers
[00:01:02.336]to the questions because children and I can do collaborative
[00:01:06.664]investigation so let's find out.
[00:01:09.272]And that's the things that I hear after I talk with teachers.
[00:01:13.072]And that's a natural process of scientific investigation.

[00:01:19.152]Partnerships with public schools and other community preschools
[00:01:22.712]provide settings for research and development.
[00:01:25.944]On campus, an interdisciplinary approach is fertile ground for innovation.
[00:01:31.088]We have a very collaborative atmosphere so whenever
[00:01:34.912]one person wants to do a project, then we kind of find
[00:01:39.640]a team to do it together, to solve the problem in a more
[00:01:43.345]efficient and effective way.
[00:01:45.320]And that interdisciplinary collaborative nature of our work
[00:01:49.336]environment is excellent.
[00:01:52.848]With her graduate students, Dr. Hong builds a plan for success.
[00:01:56.936]She searches for the right combination of experts and experiences
[00:02:01.153]to help students meet their goals.
[00:02:04.112]For Shaista Syeda, that plan goes beyond academics.
[00:02:08.425]First time in my life, I move from my home, sit in an airplane
[00:02:13.128]and landed in USA.
[00:02:16.057]Dr. Hong provided support when Shaista worked to bring
[00:02:19.208]her son to Nebraska from Pakistan.
[00:02:22.216]I need huge emotional support and she literally give
[00:02:26.584]it to me, not only academically to live over here and help
[00:02:32.472]me to adopt whatever the culture and the life over here,
[00:02:35.416]and definitely these all things directly or indirectly
[00:02:38.696]influence my studies.
[00:02:40.872]By building strong relationships with students, colleagues
[00:02:43.864]and teachers, Dr. Hong makes a difference
[00:02:46.513]in the pre-school classroom.
