- [00:00:02.749]Interior design is something that I've been interested in
- [00:00:05.358]since I was really really young.
- [00:00:07.511]I used to sit in my bedroom,
- [00:00:09.370]and draw floor plans of my bedroom,
- [00:00:11.420]and make my dad rearrange my furniture.
- [00:00:15.300]My name is Allie Laurenzo,
- [00:00:16.901]I'm from Des Moines, Iowa.
- [00:00:19.031]I didn't really know what interior design was
- [00:00:21.861]until I got to UNL,
- [00:00:23.731]I just knew that it was something that I always wanted
- [00:00:25.172]to pursue and design the spaces that people use.
- [00:00:30.752]I came into the program,
- [00:00:32.002]knowing absolutely nothing.
- [00:00:33.295]I didn't take any classes in my high school.
- [00:00:36.115]They weren't offered, for architecture or interior design.
- [00:00:38.852]And so the program really helps
- [00:00:41.014]develop students from the very bottom, like I was,
- [00:00:44.075]and so we take a computer class and learn about the
- [00:00:47.137]programs that they use out in the real world.
- [00:00:49.959]And then we also go through an intro to design class
- [00:00:52.756]that shows the range of what you can do.
- [00:00:55.796]So that's helpful to freshman students to decide
- [00:00:59.617]is this right for them and whether they want to do
- [00:01:02.327]architecture or interior design or landscape architecture,
- [00:01:04.577]having to divide out their interests.
- [00:01:07.260]I think the faculty definitely influenced
- [00:01:09.630]the way I developed as an interior designer
- [00:01:12.100]and what my interests are,
- [00:01:14.163]because they are the people
- [00:01:15.985]that plan out the projects that we do
- [00:01:17.766]and help direct our designs.
- [00:01:21.193]The projects we do,
- [00:01:22.941]we try to make them as real as possible,
- [00:01:24.782]and the professors are constantly asking you
- [00:01:26.762]how would this be built,
- [00:01:28.223]how would the customer move through this space.
- [00:01:31.343]Kind of take yourself out of seeing the building from above,
- [00:01:34.056]and make yourself a user of the space
- [00:01:36.756]and how you would interact with the space,
- [00:01:39.027]making sure that the shelfies are good,
- [00:01:40.647]and all those small little details.
- [00:01:43.285]I've grown as an interior designer
- [00:01:44.726]because I've seen how space affects people.
- [00:01:50.006]The program has definitely opened my eyes to
- [00:01:53.425]how people can physically use spaces,
- [00:01:56.536]and made me more aware of everyone around me,
- [00:02:00.267]as an interior designer.
- [00:02:02.447]The Donghia Scholarship,
- [00:02:03.777]it's a national scholarship,
- [00:02:05.748]where they award thirty thousand dollars to
- [00:02:07.938]twelve fourth year interior design students
- [00:02:10.348]around the country.
- [00:02:11.568]They nominate 2 students from the program
- [00:02:15.238]to compete in there each year.
- [00:02:17.890]I chose one of my projects that I had done in my third year,
- [00:02:21.171]it was a retail project that I designed,
- [00:02:23.753]and I improved that with a couple of my professors
- [00:02:27.383]and then submitted it at the end of June,
- [00:02:30.563]and then we found out early July who the winners were.
- [00:02:34.633]It's a huge accomplishment, I think.
- [00:02:38.343]I guess it reaffirms my choice to come into
- [00:02:41.446]interior design and pursue that,
- [00:02:43.446]but what it also tells me is that I am also competitive
- [00:02:45.787]with some of the larger named schools,
- [00:02:48.028]that people automatically think of
- [00:02:49.378]when they look for when they look for
- [00:02:50.827]interior design schools.
- [00:02:52.267]It just shows that Nebraska is a really great program
- [00:02:54.760]and we're competitive around the country.
- [00:02:58.531]I think it's been a fantastic education.
- [00:03:00.840]I honestly couldn't imagined going anywhere else.
- [00:03:04.440]Being here at the interior design department at UNL
- [00:03:06.820]has opened my eyes to see what's possible.
