- [00:00:00.735]I'm Vicki Simonsen.
- [00:00:02.359]I'm in the Grassland Ecology and Management major,
- [00:00:04.748]and I'm from Superior, Nebraska.
- [00:00:07.585]I chose Grassland Ecology and Management as my major
- [00:00:10.443]because I really enjoy the grasslands
- [00:00:13.035]and their different ecology,
- [00:00:15.147]and how fire and grazing impacts them,
- [00:00:18.166]and how different species utilize different
- [00:00:21.323]stages of grasslands.
- [00:00:24.064]When I was a sophomore, I conducted
- [00:00:25.877]an undergraduate research project that involved
- [00:00:28.917]taking artificial pheasant nests and looking at
- [00:00:32.671]the land use and the landscape surrounding CRP fields
- [00:00:36.202]and analyzing how the land use surrounding a CRP field
- [00:00:40.084]impacted the survival rates of the nests
- [00:00:42.887]within that CRP field.
- [00:00:45.886]And with that research opportunity,
- [00:00:47.604]I have been able to present at national conferences
- [00:00:52.179]and state conferences, as well as
- [00:00:54.767]in the School of Natural Resources itself.
- [00:00:58.984]One of the most beneficial classes that I've taken
- [00:01:01.587]is Wildland Plants.
- [00:01:03.347]And it's where you learn to identify 200 species of plants
- [00:01:08.015]not just from Nebraska, but from across the United States.
- [00:01:11.911]They're 200 of the most common plants,
- [00:01:14.023]and you learn how to identify them by key characteristics
- [00:01:17.415]as well as how to look through a microscope
- [00:01:20.551]and identify grass from the spikelets,
- [00:01:23.347]so you're able to identify grasses from anywhere.
- [00:01:27.485]One of my favorite experiences
- [00:01:28.882]in the Grassland Ecology and Management major
- [00:01:32.253]has been taking the Grassland Management and Planning course
- [00:01:35.964]taught by Dr. Schacht and Dr. Redeen.
- [00:01:38.055]It's a course where you are able to learn from
- [00:01:42.065]professionals in the field as well as create your own
- [00:01:45.951]management plan with a team of other students
- [00:01:49.705]for a specific piece of land, which is really cool,
- [00:01:52.498]'cause it got you to really think about the management
- [00:01:55.620]of the field and the goals and objectives of the owners
- [00:01:59.622]and how that ties in to the management.
- [00:02:03.269]After I graduate from the School of Natural Resources,
- [00:02:05.872]I will be starting graduate school in the fall,
- [00:02:10.192]looking at a project that has Northern Bobwhite Quail
- [00:02:13.818]and discovering how different patch dynamics
- [00:02:17.937]of habitat play a role in population dynamics.
