- [00:00:06.999]Hi, my name is Josh Miller,
- [00:00:08.375]and I'm a student here at UNL in
- [00:00:10.060]the Doctor of Plant Health program.
- [00:00:13.313]And, Josh, would care to share
- [00:00:14.275]some of your background with us?
- [00:00:15.342]Yeah, I'm originally from Maryland.
- [00:00:16.921]I'm a graduate from the University of Maryland,
- [00:00:19.470]got my bachelor's there in cell biology, molecular
- [00:00:22.936]genetics, and then a Master's in plant genetics,
- [00:00:25.091]and, upon graduation, I started work for
- [00:00:27.416]an ag-retailer in Maryland and Pennsylvania,
- [00:00:31.736]and have worked the past eight years in
- [00:00:34.669]Pennsylvania as a crop consultant.
- [00:00:37.433]Why did you choose to to come
- [00:00:39.031]to UNL and the DPH program?
- [00:00:40.921]It was actually a difficult decision,
- [00:00:45.081]I am married, I have three kids,
- [00:00:47.214]I had a job that I loved,
- [00:00:49.443]and it was just by chance that I
- [00:00:51.256]met Doctor Hein at a conference
- [00:00:52.718]in Florida when I was there
- [00:00:54.435]for the company I was
- [00:00:55.672]previously working for.
- [00:00:56.803]But, I learned more about the
- [00:00:58.040]program, and I realized that
- [00:01:00.845]what this program is
- [00:01:02.776]equipping us to do in
- [00:01:04.578]the future is really what is needed
- [00:01:05.698]in the field of agriculture.
- [00:01:06.903]I know that from experience as
- [00:01:08.279]a crop consultant, the things
- [00:01:09.485]I was dealing with on a day-to-day basis,
- [00:01:10.946]working with growers, seeing what
- [00:01:14.796]problems they were facing out in the field,
- [00:01:16.705]trying to increase yields,
- [00:01:18.839]doing it in an environmentally sound way.
- [00:01:20.833]Being from Maryland, we
- [00:01:22.604]had the Chesapeake Bay Watershed so
- [00:01:24.321]we had to do everything in a very
- [00:01:25.761]environmentally sound way.
- [00:01:27.126]So, there is a lot of
- [00:01:28.758]different challenges that growers
- [00:01:30.145]have today and to
- [00:01:34.464]have the knowledge and the background
- [00:01:36.374]to be able to address all
- [00:01:37.600]those parts that go into
- [00:01:38.624]solving these problems and to
- [00:01:40.832]pushing the field forward
- [00:01:42.101]is vitally important,
- [00:01:43.658]and that is what the DPH program
- [00:01:45.653]really encompasses and
- [00:01:48.021]what it is here for.
- [00:01:49.183]We are here to learn about the
- [00:01:52.319]soil nutrition, we are here to learn about
- [00:01:54.879]plants, we are here to learn about
- [00:01:55.914]entomology, we are here to
- [00:01:56.865]learn about plant pathology.
- [00:01:57.849]Everything that is involved in
- [00:01:59.363]agriculture it's unique, it's unique
- [00:02:02.094]that we have a program that
- [00:02:03.790]brings all the pieces together.
- [00:02:05.251]So, understanding what it's like out
- [00:02:07.736]in the field and seeing what
- [00:02:09.432]this program was all about, it was
- [00:02:12.450]something that I just had to do.
- [00:02:13.517]So, it was a conversation my wife and I
- [00:02:15.149]had, we slept on it, we prayed on it,
- [00:02:17.463]and, for about a year, and
- [00:02:19.117]finally made the decision to
- [00:02:21.183]come on back to school.
- [00:02:21.834]So, we are here living in Lincoln and
- [00:02:23.925]loving it right now.
- [00:02:25.597]So you are here
- [00:02:27.308]Yeah
- [00:02:28.024]You graduate, you
- [00:02:28.541]get your DPH degree, what
- [00:02:30.076]do you plan to do with it?
- [00:02:31.122]Um, currently what I'd like to
- [00:02:33.801]do is get back into industry.
- [00:02:35.358]I think what I'm going to be equipped to do when
- [00:02:38.931]I leave here is bring a unique
- [00:02:41.096]perspective to applied research
- [00:02:43.070]that is being done at these
- [00:02:44.339]companies right now.
- [00:02:45.459]You know, the Bayers, the BASF,
- [00:02:47.176]the Monsantos, the Syngentas;
- [00:02:48.403]to have the background I'm
- [00:02:51.080]going to have coming out of
- [00:02:52.146]this and then the previous
- [00:02:53.288]experience I had working out
- [00:02:54.535]in the field, I'm looking to
- [00:02:56.349]go into a place like that and help
- [00:02:58.386]in their applied research and
- [00:03:00.316]maybe bring in a fresh perspective
- [00:03:01.778]as to how to tackle
- [00:03:03.687]the problems that they
- [00:03:04.711]are trying to face.
- [00:03:05.639]They may be looking at
- [00:03:07.047]trying to do, you know,
- [00:03:08.401]one manner, but knowing
- [00:03:09.841]how the different disciplines
- [00:03:11.601]interact may help with those problems.
- [00:03:14.897]Alright Josh, thanks for sharing.
