- [00:00:02.424]The College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:05.522]is committed to strengthening relationships among children, families, schools and communities.
- [00:00:10.700]Our focus on early childhood education research is based on collaboration
- [00:00:14.192]among researchers, practitioners and policy makers.
- [00:00:17.696]Research helps us develop effective programs to help families succeed.
- [00:00:21.480]We invite you to learn more about the research we do here at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:27.135][music]
- [00:00:30.032]Research at Nebraska engages families and supports teachers,
- [00:00:35.061]brings science and math into early learning environments,
- [00:00:39.083]improves nutrition and supports strong mental health.
- [00:00:43.779]High quality early childhood research and relationships with families and those in the field
- [00:00:48.891]help close the gap for children who are struggling.
- [00:00:52.435]By working together and sharing information, we enhance learning and positive development.
- [00:00:58.339]The research that we are conducting is happening
- [00:01:00.483]in the field, it's in the homes, in the classrooms
- [00:01:03.907]and in the communities that really matter for children.
- [00:01:06.622]Two years ago, four year old Kamani had trouble
- [00:01:11.494]communicating… after working with his mom and his teacher,
- [00:01:15.078]his language skills have improved.
- [00:01:17.980][we have six!]
- [00:01:20.174]Early childhood educator Becky White and Kamani's mother meet regularly
- [00:01:24.118]as part of the "Getting Ready Project."
- [00:01:26.750]We've been able to have the same goals and be
- [00:01:29.478]working on the same things at the same time so that
- [00:01:32.006]way he's been able to progress more quickly.
- [00:01:34.526]Teamwork and home visits help children succeed.
- [00:01:38.142]Communities and we as researchers and academicians and practitioners
- [00:01:43.246]are very excited about trying to help children catch up before
- [00:01:47.398]they actually get to school entry.
- [00:01:49.751][he's getting more comfortable writing the numbers]
- [00:01:52.926]It helps us to have a mutual partnership with
- [00:01:56.968]the parents.
- [00:01:58.454]Parents are really powerful, they are their child's first teacher.
- [00:02:01.598]We've seen enhanced language and literacy skills.
- [00:02:04.782]We've also seen exciting outcomes in parenting behavior.
- [00:02:07.892]So parents are more effective at supporting their child's development.
- [00:02:12.158]For Kamani, the Getting Ready program paves the way for a smooth school experience.
- [00:02:17.839]Now he's caught up with his peers and he'll be able to start
- [00:02:20.422]kindergarten right where he needs to be.
- [00:02:24.414]Early childhood teacher preparation is provided by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:02:29.842]along with professional development for teachers and caregivers.
- [00:02:32.902]Evidence based research and proven strategies
- [00:02:35.387]help create and environment that enhances early childhood education.
- [00:02:40.542]Quality early learning environments really do set
- [00:02:42.782]the stage for success in later years and also their
- [00:02:46.542]capabilities and potential for learning.
- [00:02:49.910]Playing with blocks if fun, but it can also help children
- [00:02:54.470]recognize shapes or learn about balance.
- [00:02:57.622]One of the goals that I have for my research
- [00:03:00.255]is to build competence in early childhood teachers
- [00:03:03.885]so that they can teach science concepts to young children in the classroom.
- [00:03:08.126][one, two, three…]
- [00:03:10.942]Research identifies effective strategies for teaching math concepts
- [00:03:15.198]in preschool and at home.
- [00:03:17.925]My kids are here since they are babies and
- [00:03:22.792]you can see how much they learn.
- [00:03:24.533]We're celebrating all of the math activities that they have been doing.
- [00:03:26.270]The families are involved so that they can take things home.
- [00:03:29.190]Good teachers matter so we have really focused on our
- [00:03:35.840]efforts on trying to better prepare teachers.
- [00:03:40.222]This has been a great way to expand our knowledge
- [00:03:42.614]of math.
- [00:03:43.806]Research at Nebraska strives to improve family mental health.
- [00:03:47.835][Mr Lion!]
- [00:03:49.094]When parents have a strong relationship, children do better.
- [00:03:52.558]That's one of the conclusions from a collaborative study by researchers
- [00:03:55.990]in Nebraska and Brazil.
- [00:03:58.246]The goal of the study is to identify interventions that improve family functioning.
- [00:04:03.630]One of the outcomes of our study is that children grow
- [00:04:06.902]better when the marital relationship is strong.
- [00:04:10.062]Access to mental health services is another challenge,
- [00:04:12.902]especially in isolated rural communities.
- [00:04:16.055]Teletherapy provided at the University of Nebraska
- [00:04:18.750]provides a secure, private way to reach those who need help
- [00:04:22.646]even when clients are across the state.
- [00:04:25.366]So what's essential about our program is that we do several studies related
- [00:04:28.950]to families and children, one of which is where we
- [00:04:33.839]work in rural settings, where we treat children and families
- [00:04:37.150]using distance technology.
- [00:04:39.255][Oh, look at these vegetables. Look at how colorful they are.]
- [00:04:43.526]Simple changes in the way parents and caregivers talk
- [00:04:46.438]to kids at the table can improve nutrition.
- [00:04:49.422]Research on effective strategies is used in workbooks and
- [00:04:52.574]videos designed to encourage healthy eating.
- [00:04:55.526]My research is very applied.
- [00:04:57.655]I derive great purpose and passion when I'm
- [00:05:00.998]talking with parents and child care providers about this.
- [00:05:04.660]At Nebraska, a community of researchers works to
- [00:05:07.811]understand obesity and related diseases.
- [00:05:10.916]Information based on solid research findings helps families
- [00:05:14.036]make good decisions.
- [00:05:16.043]It's really valuable that we're able to
- [00:05:17.811]mesh the two together between the research that can
- [00:05:20.636]happen within the university setting to those
- [00:05:22.675]community educators that might be out there.
- [00:05:25.084]At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln we are committed
- [00:05:28.028]to doing what is best for children.
- [00:05:30.524]We appreciate our partnership with Brazil because
- [00:05:33.261]we have different ways of approaching the same challenges.
- [00:05:36.331]We are very excited about the possibility of creating a research partnership
- [00:05:39.765]with Brazil. We know that children in America
- [00:05:42.581]and children in Brazil share many of the same challenges.
- [00:05:47.085]And we have a lot to learn with and from one another.
- [00:05:50.638][music]
