- [00:00:24.620]Tonia Durden is a member of the Learning Child Action Team,
- [00:00:28.012]a program through University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension
- [00:00:31.388]that helps prepare children for kindergarten.
- [00:00:34.820]Hi Emily, I'm Dr. Durden, how are you?
- [00:00:39.644]The action team creates research based programming and resources for families
- [00:00:44.636]and early childhood professionals.
- [00:00:47.340]We work with teachers, we work with families,
- [00:00:49.132]we work with nonprofits,
- [00:00:50.660]we work with legislation.
- [00:00:52.380]We have all of these different clients we work with
- [00:00:54.668]in order to focus our goal which is helping to support
- [00:00:59.052]successful young children.
- [00:01:01.844]Dr. Durden also works to ensure military families who don't
- [00:01:06.388]live on a military installation have access to quality childcare.
- [00:01:11.660]As part of a department of defense funded research project,
- [00:01:14.868]she develops and coordinates programming and training for educators in 20 states.
- [00:01:20.612]We partner with the early childhood entities within that state and
- [00:01:26.700]we provide training and technical assistance.
- [00:01:28.332]Research is essential in order to provide innovative programs with proven success.
- [00:01:32.428]What's really important is we want evidence based information that's
- [00:01:36.716]proven strategies that's really going to enhance the holistic development
- [00:01:40.605]of the children that we server.
- [00:01:42.952]So who was your day today? It was good, it was really busy, though.
- [00:01:45.388]As a mentor and advisor, Dr. Durden includes her graduate students
- [00:01:49.364]as partners in research.
- [00:01:51.340]My graduate students work very specifically with me on designing
- [00:01:54.484]the research, implementing the research, they're very creative.
- [00:01:58.324]Through my work with her I can say confidently that I
- [00:02:02.404]know good qualitative methodology.
- [00:02:05.604]I also know how to collect data and access resources.
- [00:02:09.396]And then I also know how to share that.
- [00:02:12.392]A commitment to culturally responsive education and equity for all children
- [00:02:16.956]helps Dr. Durden bring the best practices in childcare to families across the country.
