- [00:00:01.828]A client living in rural Nebraska sees a therapist
- [00:00:04.804]hours away at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:08.332]Teletherapy provides a secure, private way to reach
- [00:00:11.908]those who don't have access to mental health services.
- [00:00:15.828]It's very effective, and the clients will tell you again and again
- [00:00:20.068]how thankful they are for the service.
- [00:00:22.700]We have waiting lists now.
- [00:00:24.596]Paul Springer leads an effort to connect rural Nebraska
- [00:00:27.573]with mental health services.
- [00:00:29.388]In addition to teletherapy, he works with physicians, law enforcement,
- [00:00:33.621]educators, and other champions to develop a model that breaks down barriers.
- [00:00:39.628]My research is really about bridging that gap
- [00:00:42.292]of how do we actually help Nebraskans get the mental
- [00:00:46.372]health care that they need.
- [00:00:48.092]Graduate students provide therapy, help develop interventions,
- [00:00:51.892]and collect and analyze data so the community can see what's working.
- [00:00:56.444]And then you see the impact with the people that come
- [00:00:59.268]to the interventions, whether they're consumers of mental health
- [00:01:02.388]or they have family members with mental health problems or concerns.
- [00:01:07.668]And to see them be validated and understood, it's extremely rewarding.
- [00:01:13.412]Dr. Springer's model is being expanded to serve a global community.
- [00:01:17.804]Partners in Brazil, Portugal and India are interested in Nebraska's framework
- [00:01:23.220]of tele-mental health and community based services.
- [00:01:26.813]Programs designed for individual Nebraska towns can be tailored to
- [00:01:30.756]meet the needs of other cultures.
- [00:01:33.180]We really need to understand the culture of those countries
- [00:01:36.436]so when we go into those communities we can be sensitive to their needs
- [00:01:40.668]and develop a model that really works for them.
- [00:01:44.428]Students earn valuable experience in a collaborative setting.
- [00:01:48.252]Dr. Springer provides a strong foundation.
- [00:01:51.300]You get specialized training in how to work in a medical community
- [00:01:55.308]with physicians collaborating and engaging really thoroughly
- [00:01:59.148]in collaborative healthcare which is the way of the future.
- [00:02:02.228]He's incredible, the best thing about Dr. Springer is his
- [00:02:05.100]ability to develop relationships.
- [00:02:06.588]Creating a bridge to services helps boost the vitality and resilience of rural Nebraska.
- [00:02:12.861]The whole goal is to help them become self sufficient,
- [00:02:16.356]to recognize the resources that they may have,
- [00:02:20.429]to mobilize around certain problems and develop solutions to address them.
