- [00:00:03.671][Narrator]: A child with a chronic illness
- [00:00:05.301]is under stress, and so is the child's family.
- [00:00:08.522]Natalie Williams studies how families cope.
- [00:00:11.761][Dr. Williams]: In my research, I'm
- [00:00:12.961]interested not only in how the children
- [00:00:14.921]are adapting and dealing with that illness
- [00:00:17.282]but also how parents, how it affects parents'
- [00:00:20.481]quality of life and their day to day
- [00:00:22.061]interactions with their child.
- [00:00:24.302][Narrator]: Dr. Williams sees a tremendous
- [00:00:26.521]impact on parents and siblings of a child
- [00:00:29.161]struggling with illness. Social support and
- [00:00:32.182]relationships with schools or other family
- [00:00:34.301]members can suffer. For example, parents
- [00:00:37.582]of a child who has a food allergy often
- [00:00:40.201]deal with other adults who don't take the
- [00:00:42.661]condition seriously.
- [00:00:44.261][Dr. Williams]: What I would like to do,
- [00:00:45.461]and I think what's really important to me
- [00:00:46.721]in my research is to do something that's
- [00:00:48.881]very applied, and that has easy next steps
- [00:00:51.761]to be able to translate that into an intervention.
- [00:00:54.661][Narrator]: As a mentor to her graduate
- [00:00:58.242]students, Dr. Williams provides training
- [00:01:00.981]and research skills. Her goal is to move
- [00:01:04.102]students towards independence.
- [00:01:06.001][Dr. Williams]: As they progress through
- [00:01:07.941]the graduate training, what I shift to is
- [00:01:10.322]kind of more of a junior colleague model
- [00:01:12.461]where they're able to be more independent
- [00:01:15.041]and I can expect them to be more independent.
- [00:01:16.981][Maren Hankey]: She is really interested
- [00:01:19.161]in collaborating with students, so we work
- [00:01:22.041]together to develop research ideas, collect
- [00:01:24.621]data, and also to analyze data or write
- [00:01:27.481]everything up. Working with her has made
- [00:01:29.702]me a much better student, researcher,
- [00:01:31.302]and writer.
- [00:01:32.542][Narrator]: The Department of Child,
- [00:01:34.021]Youth and Family Studies provides support
- [00:01:36.441]and a strong community.
- [00:01:38.281][Maren Hankey]: They have a thousand
- [00:01:39.522]opportunities for students to get involved
- [00:01:41.822]not only on campus but in the community.
- [00:01:44.202][Dr. Williams]: We have open doors,
- [00:01:45.541]we meet regularly with our grad students
- [00:01:47.442]and we're really invested in them being
- [00:01:50.682]successful.
- [00:01:51.702][Narrator]: Dr. Williams says it's
- [00:01:52.961]gratifying to hear from parents she's
- [00:01:55.181]worked with who feel her research has
- [00:01:57.741]touched their lives.
- [00:01:58.961][Dr. Williams]: Having that connection
- [00:02:00.301]and just that reminder that what we do
- [00:02:02.362]really does matter and that it's an
- [00:02:04.901]influence or has the potential to
- [00:02:06.482]influence somebody's life in a positive way
- [00:02:08.501]is really important to me.
