Winter Winds
Description
The Winter Festival is a unique concert band and chamber ensemble festival for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. The festival is designed to give participants an outstanding and comprehensive playing experience. Festival participants are chosen through a recorded audition process. Students attending the festival are involved in three different ensembles: an honor band; a chamber ensemble coached by one of the Glenn Korff School of Music's talented applied wind and percussion faculty; and a large symphonic band that combines the festival honor band with the University Wind Ensemble. Students also participate in a masterclass with the applied wind and percussion faculty. - [00:00:05.300]UNL's winter festival is designed to
- [00:00:07.343]give high school brass, woodwind, and
- [00:00:09.432]percussion players a full emersion musical
- [00:00:11.459]experience, in addition to playing
- [00:00:13.369]in a traditional honor band setting,
- [00:00:15.140]they also participate in masterclasses,
- [00:00:17.027]chamber ensembles, and a full blown
- [00:00:18.894]symphonic band.
- [00:00:20.451]I'm John Bailey, professor of flute at
- [00:00:22.958]the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and
- [00:00:25.480]this is the winter wind festival, that we
- [00:00:27.458]do every year, for high schoolers,
- [00:00:29.335]we think it's a terrific event,
- [00:00:31.383]their is a big emphasis on chamber music
- [00:00:34.711]as well as large ensemble
- [00:00:36.336]So, all students get a really good
- [00:00:39.665]sense of, really intense music making.
- [00:00:42.618](Barber) What we're trying to
- [00:00:43.957]do is develop
- [00:00:44.862]the complete musician, the masterclasses
- [00:00:46.890]are focused on solo playing and the
- [00:00:48.681]techniques specific to each instrument.
- [00:00:50.750]The chamber ensembles are the
- [00:00:52.447]most distinctive aspect of our festival,
- [00:00:54.515]small groups of four or five students
- [00:00:56.606]are paired with one of our amazing
- [00:00:58.323]faculty coaches to explore how
- [00:01:00.030]musicians interact.
- [00:01:01.471](Bailey) we also do a masterclass,
- [00:01:03.262]faculty ensembles perform for the students
- [00:01:08.029]and I think that it's a really, intense
- [00:01:11.187]wonderful weekend.
- [00:01:12.968](Barber) They learn how to communicate
- [00:01:15.133]through their playing, then the honor
- [00:01:16.903]band, about 65 players, applies the
- [00:01:19.208]concepts of the chamber experience to
- [00:01:21.235]the large ensemble format.
- [00:01:23.004]Then we expand that one-step further by
- [00:01:25.490]combining the honor band with the UNL
- [00:01:27.516]Wind Ensemble, to create a large Symphonic
- [00:01:29.525]Band. The big group tests everything
- [00:01:31.633]they've learned about connection,
- [00:01:33.287]communication, and ensemble-ship.
- [00:01:34.927](Kevin) I'm Kevin Roark, I'm from
- [00:01:36.574]Abraham Lincoln in Council
- [00:01:38.034]Bluffs Iowa, and I came to winter winds
- [00:01:39.940]because it's a great way to get a good
- [00:01:41.895]glimpse of the UNL band and the collegiate
- [00:01:45.487]level of playing.
- [00:01:46.629](Barber) It's amazing to watch the
- [00:01:48.287]transformation of students from session
- [00:01:50.195]to session, in three days they get a
- [00:01:51.910]glimpse of what it's like to be a
- [00:01:53.744]collegiate music major, even as they're
- [00:01:55.845]working along side UNL's best
- [00:01:57.456]undergraduate and graduate student
- [00:01:59.407]musicians.
- [00:02:00.505]They get to absorb the expertise and
- [00:02:02.450]collegiality of UNL's fantastic applied
- [00:02:04.355]faculty, and hear the pro's in action.
- [00:02:06.169]They get to hang out at a Big Ten Campus,
- [00:02:08.582]and get to know other students from around
- [00:02:10.634]the country, who share their passion for
- [00:02:12.515]music.
- [00:02:13.218]Hi, my name is Mitchell
- [00:02:14.335]Eldridge, I'm a senior at Milliard North
- [00:02:16.266]high school, in Omaha Nebraska.
- [00:02:17.848]I love winter winds because it's just a
- [00:02:19.799]great experience to come to.
- [00:02:21.474]Be surrounded by people that love music
- [00:02:24.033]as much as I do, and for me music is
- [00:02:26.103]so important, and to see that in other
- [00:02:28.216]people is really encouraging.
- [00:02:29.878](Barber) As the conductor of the two
- [00:02:31.623]festival bands, I love January, because
- [00:02:33.533]I get to introduce great classic
- [00:02:35.250]literature to the students, my goal is to
- [00:02:37.660]setup a variety of musical challenges,
- [00:02:39.613]different styles, ears, textures.
- [00:02:41.960]To develop their abilities as ensemble
- [00:02:43.846]players, with the honor band, I shoot
- [00:02:45.683]for something newer to give them an idea
- [00:02:47.647]of the state of the art. And, something
- [00:02:49.521]older that they might not have had the
- [00:02:51.404]chance to play.
- [00:02:52.648]Hello, my name is
- [00:02:53.743]William White, I'm from Lewis Central high
- [00:02:55.768]school in Council Bluffs Iowa. I play the
- [00:02:57.737]tenor trombone and I came to winter winds
- [00:02:59.706]because it was recommended to me by
- [00:03:01.483]trombone professor at UNL, Dr. Scott
- [00:03:03.381]Anderson. It a fantastic
- [00:03:04.843]experience with an amazing repertoire
- [00:03:06.728](Barber) With the Symphonic Band,
- [00:03:08.377]I get to pull out all the stops with epic
- [00:03:10.388]masterworks designed for a very large,
- [00:03:12.505]very accomplished ensemble.
- [00:03:14.073]The chance to perform Shostakovich, or
- [00:03:16.377]Kolenikov, or Respighi, with a 120
- [00:03:18.489]piece band is rare and wonderful.
- [00:03:20.527]we all leave the finale
- [00:03:21.868]concert, fired up to bring what we've
- [00:03:23.759]learned & experienced, home.
- [00:03:25.187]Hi I'm Anne Stratman,
- [00:03:26.472]I'm a senior at Omaha, Duchesne,
- [00:03:28.068]I play clarinet, and I came to
- [00:03:29.571]winter winds because I thought it
- [00:03:31.288]would be a great opportunity to play
- [00:03:32.877]in a really high-level band, and also to
- [00:03:34.853]be able to work with the UNL faculty.
- [00:03:36.665]Hi my name is Lauren McNeal,
- [00:03:38.018]I'm a junior at Kearney high school,
- [00:03:39.801]I'm a percussionist, and,
- [00:03:42.222]I came to UNL winter winds, because,
- [00:03:44.334]I love being in band, and I want to go to
- [00:03:46.968]UNL in college, so, it's a great
- [00:03:49.561]glimpse of what I could possibly be doing
- [00:03:52.749]in my future.
- [00:03:53.986][sounds of music swell]
- [00:04:01.838][music fades]
