[00:00:20.314]I really truly believe that education can make a difference in anyone's life.
[00:00:25.834]My biggest motivation to pursue my graduate degree is the opportunity for advancement.
[00:00:30.354]I recognize that to reach my professional goals, I need a degree focusing on student affairs,
[00:00:37.162]because I desire to be a vice president of student affairs some day.
[00:00:40.580]The information that I'm learning and the projects that I'm working on have been
[00:00:45.130]very applicable to what is happening to me every day in the high school.
[00:00:50.242]As I was weighing, should I go back and get this degree, I have three small kids, we
[00:00:55.090]just moved to Nebraska, we don't have any family.
[00:00:57.866]I think about one of my mentors, he told me there's never really a perfect time.
[00:01:01.946]You just have to jump in and you have to do it and I think this program is
[00:01:04.914]structured in a way that whether you have family support or not,
[00:01:08.578]I think the faculty are really supportive and they're like a family.
[00:01:12.226]Online courses are they're a dime a dozen in this day and age.
[00:01:16.290]There's something about being the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in comparison to some
[00:01:21.034]of those other online.
[00:01:22.114]I almost look at them as online products.
[00:01:24.355]These for profit institutions which inherently make them different.
[00:01:29.594]I wasn't interested in just doing online courses for online courses sake,
[00:01:33.634]I wanted the reputation of the University of Nebraska to back that.
[00:01:38.618]I knew that I was going to get a good quality education.
[00:01:41.970]I've always been a helper.
[00:01:45.514]In high school it was me giving advice to my friends,
[00:01:47.914]and giving them a shoulder to cry on.
[00:01:50.122]But through my experiences in the graduate program, I've been able to really build on those
[00:01:55.265]and to really figure out the developmental side of that.
[00:01:58.778]So if they're having a problem, like what can we do to move forward from this.
[00:02:02.730]And not just how do we fix it now?
[00:02:05.034]The cohort model has been a big foundation in that it's been very developmental.
[00:02:09.050]I've been exposed to a lot of different identities and backgrounds and a whole vast array of diversity.
[00:02:16.794]The interesting thing about education is you get that first degree and you say
[00:02:20.474]'Oh, gosh, I can do this."
[00:02:21.858]Okay, now it's time to go on and do this, and you know don't stop there.
[00:02:25.962]I find value in getting a graduate degree here not only because we're a Big Ten School
[00:02:30.682]and because we have strong foundations in research and academics,
[00:02:33.922]but also because they care about you growing as a person.
