- [00:00:02.783]You have to dream big and you have to have big ambitions,
- [00:00:05.402]because otherwise,
- [00:00:06.242]you're not going to have that level of passion
- [00:00:07.942]or commitment necessary to succeed.
- [00:00:11.303]My name is Salvadore Linquist,
- [00:00:12.853]and I'm a senior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:00:15.086]and I'm a landscape architecture student.
- [00:00:18.176]I knew for a while that I wanted to get into,
- [00:00:20.938]at least, architecture,
- [00:00:22.147]I was always inspired by buildings
- [00:00:24.778]and the build environment.
- [00:00:27.350]I originally was in the architecture program,
- [00:00:30.530]it wasn't until I took one of the
- [00:00:32.322]intro to landscape architecture courses
- [00:00:34.940]where I kind of learned more about the profession,
- [00:00:37.430]what it's all about.
- [00:00:39.046]I was kind of already accustomed to the outdoors
- [00:00:40.806]and I really loved sustainability and things like that,
- [00:00:43.093]so it seemed kind of natural for me to
- [00:00:44.915]make that switch over to landscape architecture.
- [00:00:49.561]When I need to get into the zone,
- [00:00:50.778]or get into the creative zone,
- [00:00:52.459]I will sit up here in the attic,
- [00:00:53.969]usually with headphones on, music blaring,
- [00:00:57.341]with all of my pencils and markers just laying out,
- [00:01:00.292]fresh piece of trace, and just sketching.
- [00:01:03.352]I think it's okay to
- [00:01:04.660]really get your hands dirty
- [00:01:06.510]when it comes to getting ideas on paper.
- [00:01:09.638]I think that's really the best way to
- [00:01:11.168]get your ideas out there.
- [00:01:13.214]Team building is something that's really focused on.
- [00:01:16.455]It's all about working together and producing a
- [00:01:18.976]final product that everyone can be proud of.
- [00:01:21.813]It's something that translates to the professional world.
- [00:01:24.095]We will be working in collaborations with other disciplines,
- [00:01:27.954]and it's not just about the technical side of things,
- [00:01:31.446]it's also about being able to communicate in a way that
- [00:01:35.296]really helps to solve the design problem.
- [00:01:40.156]We're already starting to present to the city planners,
- [00:01:43.216]to stakeholders that are involved
- [00:01:44.977]with the communities, with that,
- [00:01:46.937]I think that we are gaining some valuable experience.
- [00:01:50.127]I think that the faculty here
- [00:01:51.738]do genuinely care about us as individuals
- [00:01:55.406]and they do have really high expectations, so at times,
- [00:01:58.649]it can be difficult, but it's, ultimately,
- [00:02:00.859]it's really rewarding.
- [00:02:04.803]We're currently at Smithgroup JJR in Ann Arbor, Michigan
- [00:02:07.681]for a summer internship through the landscape
- [00:02:09.741]architecture program at UNL.
- [00:02:12.131]From being here at JJR,
- [00:02:13.422]I've learned that the opportunities that I've had at UNL,
- [00:02:16.074]I mean,
- [00:02:16.954]it really does prepare us for some of the
- [00:02:18.634]situations that I've encountered here over the summer,
- [00:02:21.494]in that a lot of the projects are
- [00:02:23.115]really interdisciplinary based,
- [00:02:24.605]and it's a lot about working in a group environment.
- [00:02:28.101]We're working on a bunch of different types of projects,
- [00:02:30.509]from urban redevelopment to campus master planning.
- [00:02:33.920]I feel like I am part of a team.
- [00:02:35.160]I don't feel like I'm an intern here.
- [00:02:36.991]I feel like I'm almost an entry level landscape architect
- [00:02:39.721]working with everyone.
- [00:02:42.021]I'm excited to go back to school, finish my degree,
- [00:02:45.001]and be able to apply what I have learned here
- [00:02:46.342]to the real world,
- [00:02:47.292]I'm excited to get out there
- [00:02:48.445]and actually start working as a landscape architect.
- [00:02:52.672]I don't think I could have been successful
- [00:02:53.922]at my summer internship,
- [00:02:55.244]was it not for the skills that I have gained at UNL.
- [00:02:58.225]I'm glad I made the decision to go into the landscape
- [00:02:59.855]architecture program at UNL.
- [00:03:01.596]I'm thankful for the opportunities that I've had there,
- [00:03:03.277]and I'm excited to do this for the rest of my life.
