- [00:00:02.071]The history of a place
- [00:00:03.469]I think is really interesting,
- [00:00:04.557]and how do you make a place that will have history?
- [00:00:07.330]That's one of the greatest questions in architecture.
- [00:00:11.106]My name is Sarah Hitchcock,
- [00:00:12.386]I go to the University of Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:00:14.519]and I'm currently getting my Masters in Architecture.
- [00:00:18.071]When I came to Nebraska,
- [00:00:19.542]I didn't know really what I was getting into,
- [00:00:21.953]and then I came to the College of Architecture
- [00:00:24.438]and there are so many opportunities.
- [00:00:27.062]I was able to travel the world
- [00:00:30.080]through the school,
- [00:00:31.776]which is incredible.
- [00:00:34.006]I grew up in a family that valued traveling,
- [00:00:37.344]and valued experiencing other people.
- [00:00:41.152]Each city has a different thing
- [00:00:42.986]that I'm looking at.
- [00:00:45.375]It is the architecture,
- [00:00:46.474]but a lot of times it's the people,
- [00:00:48.309]and how people are using the city.
- [00:00:50.516]I love paying attention to movement,
- [00:00:53.642]understanding how people enjoy space
- [00:00:55.785]is really important,
- [00:00:57.055]and it happens differently all over the world.
- [00:01:01.257]Looking at the finer details, like an archway,
- [00:01:04.329]or a mosaic tile, or something like that,
- [00:01:07.369]I think those can be really inspiring.
- [00:01:09.737]I'm interested in the story,
- [00:01:11.593]so how do you tell the story of this place,
- [00:01:14.238]or what this might be.
- [00:01:16.424]I think storytelling is so important to architecture.
- [00:01:20.392]Whether you're telling the story to the client,
- [00:01:23.570]or it's the story of the building after it's done,
- [00:01:26.034]it's how will it be used, who's going to use it.
- [00:01:28.541]So I try to think of all of those things
- [00:01:30.941]and find a direction,
- [00:01:32.007]and it might not be the final direction,
- [00:01:33.532]but it's a place to start.
- [00:01:38.577]So this internship, I've been applying for many a year now,
- [00:01:42.151]this is my third year applying.
- [00:01:44.380]It was a lot of being sure of myself
- [00:01:46.705]and continuing to try and not giving up on trying
- [00:01:49.531]because I knew I wanted to be here.
- [00:01:52.113]Gensler is an incredible company
- [00:01:54.321]because they're trying to be really progressive
- [00:01:56.176]in their approach to design.
- [00:01:59.195]They're very attentive to what's going on
- [00:02:01.349]in the world outside of just architecture.
- [00:02:03.440]They're not trying to just be an architecture firm,
- [00:02:05.744]they're a design firm, and they know the value
- [00:02:08.037]of design thinking,
- [00:02:09.594]and I think that's really great
- [00:02:10.597]to be part of a firm that values that.
- [00:02:14.383]I think you're never really sure
- [00:02:16.495]of what you know
- [00:02:18.052]until you're in a situation where you have to use it.
- [00:02:22.575]You don't always know when you're learning
- [00:02:24.527]how it's going to apply to the real world,
- [00:02:26.169]and then you get into it
- [00:02:27.385]and you're like, oh man I remember that,
- [00:02:28.964]or I learned that, or someone showed me that.
- [00:02:33.326]I am really grateful for the education
- [00:02:34.905]that I've gotten at UNL,
- [00:02:36.046]I think it's really prepared me to dive into new situations,
- [00:02:39.918]and be ready and do the best that I can
- [00:02:41.891]with the education that I've been given.
- [00:02:44.632](gentle music)
