University of Nebraska-Lincoln computer scientists Carrick Detweiler and Sebastian Elbaum are developing unmanned aerial vehicles that interact with the environment. [00:00:01.989]A drone is used to monitor water quality and quantity thanks to research by
[00:00:07.400]University of Nebraska-Lincoln scientists.
[00:00:10.319]The unmanned aerial vehicle makes the job easier.
[00:00:14.639]Down here at the bottom is a micro-pump, and along the way here there's a
[00:00:19.619]conductivity sensor, which is a fancy name for something that can detect when
[00:00:23.149]it's in the water.
[00:00:24.659]Sensors improve data collection and a mechanical system allows the drone to
[00:00:29.539]take multiple samples.
[00:00:31.709]You can actually carry this with you easily.
[00:00:34.039]You can just drive up to the side of a lake or river and send it out to collect
[00:00:38.379]samples for you.
[00:00:39.809]This also greatly speeds up the sampling process so instead of just going out and
[00:00:43.319]collecting one or two samples in the lake, in that same time we can collect
[00:00:47.019]dozens of samples.
[00:00:48.449]Funding from the US Department of Agriculture fuels the project, part of a
[00:00:52.629]National Science Foundation initiative.
[00:00:55.459]UNL's interdisciplinary drone research helped attract the grant.
[00:01:00.019]The grant that is funding this research is part of the National Robotics Initiative
[00:01:03.560]and it's a very, very competitive grant program.
[00:01:06.439]Less than 10% acceptance rate and we're actually just one of five or six
[00:01:11.199]that were funded.
[00:01:13.730]Improvements could be applied to drones needed to take leaf samples from a field
[00:01:18.299]or collect information from the site of a disaster.
[00:01:21.779]These kinds of systems will also be very useful for city managers and also for
[00:01:27.599]insurance purposes and in disaster response.
[00:01:30.630]We're trained to bring these aerial robots down to the ground, closer to people and
[00:01:34.529]closer to the environment so that they can be more useful.
[00:01:37.849]To make a reality out of everyone having a drone to help them perform their
[00:01:42.929]task or their job or make their life easier.
[00:01:45.579]I think the sky is the limit.
