[00:00:06.000]But so far, there is no vaccine for HIV,
[00:00:09.441]the virus that has killed an estimated 36 million people in thirty years.
[00:00:14.952]The ultimate goal is to generate an effective, and also safe, HIV vaccine.
[00:00:21.181]University of Nebraska-Lincoln researchers are collaborating on a new approach
[00:00:26.021]to an HIV vaccine.
[00:00:27.912]The project combines the efforts of the Department of Chemistry and the
[00:00:31.802]Nebraska Center for Virology.
[00:00:33.701]So we can bring the strategy in different fields together and I think that is
[00:00:38.722]the beauty of this project.
[00:00:40.631]Vaccines use a dead or weakened form of a virus to trigger an immune response.
[00:00:46.112]Protective antibodies are developed that fight off infection.
[00:00:49.881]But that approach doesn't work with HIV because the disease replicates too fast.
[00:00:55.891]That's why we try to put an additional safety lock on this HIV.
[00:01:00.102]That is what our technology is about.
[00:01:02.461]The research team alters the virus's genetic code so it can't reproduce without
[00:01:07.742]access to a specific chemical compound.
[00:01:11.101]The vaccine provides the compound, which allows the virus to replicate just long
[00:01:16.171]enough for the immune system to produce antibodies.
[00:01:19.641]Once the compound is gone, the virus can no longer reproduce.
[00:01:24.212]You can look at it as a switch to switch on or off the replication of HIV.
[00:01:29.261]The principal investigators are excited by the possibilities.
[00:01:33.682]We are in hope of not just applying the technology to [the] HIV vaccine,
[00:01:39.502]also potentially apply to producing vaccines for other viruses.
[00:01:44.741]Support for the project comes from a $1.9 million grant awarded by the
[00:01:49.681]National Institutes of Health.
[00:01:51.831]Researchers hope their work will lead to an effective vaccine that can end
[00:01:56.701]the HIV pandemic.
