[00:00:03.370][There's no better to begin a semester than to announce great news from our faculty.
[00:00:09.650]It's my pleasure to announce an $11.3 million award from the National Institutes of Health
[00:00:16.186]to establish the Nebraska Center for the Prevention of Obesity Diseases through Dietary Molecules.
[00:00:22.450]Obesity is probably the most pressing health problem in the United States.
[00:00:28.382]It goes way beyond problems with impaired mobility, poor fitness, or low self esteem.
[00:00:37.642]Obesity comes with diseases like liver disease, diabetes, heart disease and even cancer.
[00:00:44.466]So really major, major diseases that all trace back to obesity.
[00:00:48.722]This center puts UNL at the cutting edge of new research approaches to preventing obesity
[00:00:54.892]related diseases which is a significant problem for the society.
[00:01:00.394]And so we are looking at this all the way from the molecular level which Janos and the team, the whole team here
[00:01:07.794]is really helping to put forward, all the way to the applied level as we look at things like food deserts
[00:01:17.170]and other reasons why people might become obese in their lifetime.
[00:01:22.619]And so we're really looking at this from an ecosystemic, multidisciplinary level.
[00:01:28.426]And I think that is where the University of Nebraska shines.
[00:01:32.827]Tackling these problems is an excellent fit for the land grant mission of our university
[00:01:39.090]to improve the lives of families in the state of Nebraska.
[00:01:44.178]This center also exemplifies our research approach at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
[00:01:50.708]Focus on big societal challenges.
[00:01:54.874]Build multidisciplinary teams.
[00:01:57.423]Build collaboration where they're appropriate.
[00:02:01.171]And provide access to specialized, state of the art facilities, state of the art equipment,

[00:02:09.570]Obesity just happens to be, at least as from a nutrition angle, the most important research that you

[00:02:18.458]And that's what got me excited with this line of research.
[00:02:21.786]Our researchers focus on what is happening at the molecular level in obesity related diseases is
[00:02:28.018]unique in the US and globally.
[00:02:30.746]This is the kind of research that attracts funding and impacts our lives.
