- [00:00:02.961]There are a number of programs available
- [00:00:04.601]to help our students outside the classroom,
- [00:00:06.319]starting in the first year from a skills program,
- [00:00:09.010]there's the informal programs of students getting together,
- [00:00:12.491]clinic opportunities, that type of
- [00:00:14.608]outside the traditional classroom.
- [00:00:16.937]One of the neatest ones, I think
- [00:00:19.338]that we have spent a lot of time developing,
- [00:00:21.410]and a lot of students take advantage of
- [00:00:23.072]is our externship program.
- [00:00:24.980]I've sent students for externships during the school year,
- [00:00:28.522]or during the summer for a number of
- [00:00:31.396]both governmental offices and non-profits.
- [00:00:34.515](light, cheerful music)
- [00:00:36.752]One of the great ways that our students can get experience
- [00:00:38.840]outside of the classroom is by involving themselves
- [00:00:40.852]with some of our teams and competitions.
- [00:00:43.518]We have trial teams, where they'll take a simulated case,
- [00:00:46.755]and they'll try a case in front of judges and jurors.
- [00:00:50.400]They can do appellate arguments with moot court.
- [00:00:53.238]We have a nationally recognized client counseling team
- [00:00:56.282]without the simulated case and they counsel clients
- [00:00:58.976]and learn how to do that, which is a huge part
- [00:01:00.907]about being an attorney.
- [00:01:02.993](light, cheerful music)
- [00:01:06.463]I think involvement in student organizations is vital.
- [00:01:10.259]Many of these student organizations created by students
- [00:01:13.285]are used to supplement what they learn in the classroom.
- [00:01:16.777]As a first-year student, your ability
- [00:01:18.359]to get really involved with student programs is limited,
- [00:01:21.336]but one program that I've been involved with
- [00:01:23.696]over the past year is the Equal Justice Society,
- [00:01:26.925]and our goal is to increase public interest awareness
- [00:01:30.989]and opportunities around the law school.
- [00:01:33.073]School of course supports people that want to go
- [00:01:34.924]into the corporate world, want to go into law firms,
- [00:01:37.668]and smaller law practices, but our goal is
- [00:01:40.994]to get students interested in public interest law.
- [00:01:44.735](bright, cheerful music)
- [00:01:48.250]I originally came to law school thinking that
- [00:01:51.000]I would be an international lawyer
- [00:01:54.696]and being a part of the
- [00:01:56.387]International Law Student Association
- [00:01:59.787]has been amazing, but it's also made me realize that
- [00:02:02.930]that spectrum is so incredibly broad
- [00:02:05.783]and that it encompasses international policy
- [00:02:08.309]and domestic policy, and I've found that I actually
- [00:02:11.011]have fallen in love more with the domestic policy.
- [00:02:14.490]It's something completely different
- [00:02:17.497]to have the opportunity to kind of go into an area
- [00:02:21.308]that's a little more narrowed down to something that
- [00:02:23.798]you're passionate about, you're interested in,
- [00:02:26.065]that you want to be involved in,
- [00:02:27.572]and then getting to apply those things that you're learning
- [00:02:30.501]in class in a more tangible and specific way.
- [00:02:34.479]By joining an organization, you're kind of
- [00:02:36.893]aligning with a group of students who want
- [00:02:38.211]to do the same thing or similar things that you do,
- [00:02:40.528]and so you're all kind of looking out
- [00:02:41.698]for opportunities in that area.
- [00:02:44.147]There's a number of programs that are available
- [00:02:46.052]for students to take the skills that they're learning
- [00:02:48.642]in the classroom and apply it outside
- [00:02:50.715]and in a different venue.
