- [00:00:02.042][Narrator]: Rochelle Dalla travels to
- [00:00:03.671]Mumbai, India, where she talks to women
- [00:00:05.541]who are part of the sex trade.
- [00:00:07.181]Human trafficking is a high profit industry
- [00:00:10.341]and Dr. Dalla hopes to give it a human face.
- [00:00:13.481][Dr. Dalla]: Talking about these women is
- [00:00:15.562]to give them a voice, telling the research,
- [00:00:18.582]sharing the stories, is to help the general
- [00:00:22.342]population understand these women as women.
- [00:00:27.022][Narrator]: Dr. Dalla has also collected
- [00:00:28.962]the stories of street prostitutes in
- [00:00:31.081]Omaha, Nebraska and teen moms
- [00:00:32.982]on the Navajo Indian reservation.
- [00:00:35.522]Her work informs the scholarly research
- [00:00:37.821]on marginalized populations.
- [00:00:40.061][Dr. Dalla]: I think it's important
- [00:00:41.663]for people to understand the developmental
- [00:00:44.682]processes that result in individuals being
- [00:00:48.281]in positions where they basically are victims
- [00:00:51.041]and helpless and really have no
- [00:00:52.901]no recourse, no way out.
- [00:00:55.842][Narrator]: As a professor, adviser and
- [00:00:58.881]mentor, Dr. Dalla helps students discover
- [00:01:01.461]their potential.
- [00:01:02.942][Heather Kennedy]: There is quite a bit of weaknesses...
- [00:01:04.841][Narrator]: Heather Kennedy took one
- [00:01:07.022]of Dr. Dalla's classes as an undergraduate,
- [00:01:09.422]and continues to benefit from her experience
- [00:01:11.961]and insight.
- [00:01:13.101][Heather Kennedy]: She does push me,
- [00:01:15.541]sets expectations that are high, but that
- [00:01:18.782]are also achievable. I believe 100% that
- [00:01:21.262]she has my best interest in her heart,
- [00:01:26.262]and I trust in that.
- [00:01:28.122][Dr. Dalla]: You've done a really good job...
- [00:01:30.702][Narrator]: Dr. Dalla inspires students
- [00:01:32.981]to follow their own path and passion.
- [00:01:35.781][Dr. Dalla]: I talk to them about you do
- [00:01:37.641]what you're passionate about, you do,
- [00:01:39.901]you know, you study things that you really
- [00:01:42.141]want to know the answers to and stuff that
- [00:01:44.321]you think that you can make a difference
- [00:01:45.982]so you can have impact.
- [00:01:47.561][Narrator]: UNL has established connections
- [00:01:49.202]in India to help support human trafficking
- [00:01:51.761]and family studies research. For Dr. Dalla,
- [00:01:54.762]it's an opportunity to listen to the voices
- [00:01:57.082]of women.
- [00:01:58.181][Dr. Dalla]: Maybe what I do will make
- [00:01:59.501]a difference eventually, and I think
- [00:02:01.041]getting the stories out there is part of that.
