- [00:00:02.321][Narrator]: Three-year-old Olivia waits
- [00:00:04.202]for the bell to ring, and then grabs a
- [00:00:05.862]piece of candy. It's one of a series of
- [00:00:09.082]tests used to study how children
- [00:00:11.182]regulate their own behavior.
- [00:00:13.561]Dr. Victoria Molfese observes from the
- [00:00:16.161]hallway and guides students on the research
- [00:00:18.901]team. Dr. Molfese and her colleagues are
- [00:00:21.641]studying how behavior regulation is
- [00:00:23.981]related to sleep habits.
- [00:00:25.941][Dr. Molfese]: What we're hoping to understand
- [00:00:27.942]is both how good sleep habits develop
- [00:00:31.281]and how families can help their toddlers
- [00:00:34.342]to develop good sleep habits.
- [00:00:36.581][Narrator]: Dr. Molfese is internationally
- [00:00:38.401]known for her research in early cognitive
- [00:00:41.161]development, including the use of behavioral
- [00:00:43.582]and brain techniques to evaluate learning
- [00:00:46.161]in young children. She says students
- [00:00:48.621]benefit from the variety of research areas
- [00:00:51.261]in the Department of Child, Youth and
- [00:00:53.202]Family Studies.
- [00:00:54.641][Dr. Molfese]: Our students get an
- [00:00:55.621]opportunity to look at families and children
- [00:00:58.981]and education in a variety of different
- [00:01:01.601]settings. So they can choose and be exposed
- [00:01:05.162]to things that they maybe didn't know
- [00:01:08.141]they were interested in when they were
- [00:01:10.701]looking for admission into our program.
- [00:01:12.322][Narrator]: Students work in teams that
- [00:01:14.361]combine faculty, experienced graduate students
- [00:01:17.161]and those who are new to the research process.
- [00:01:20.141][Dr. Molfese]: Just beginning graduate
- [00:01:22.001]students can learn a tremendous amount
- [00:01:24.341]that's going to be helpful as they pursue their
- [00:01:27.281]studies because they'll have actual hands-on
- [00:01:30.001]mentored experience working with our
- [00:01:32.441]graduate students and working with faculty
- [00:01:34.602]directly.
- [00:01:35.361][Narrator]: Students say Dr. Molfese
- [00:01:37.401]provides experience, guidance, and support
- [00:01:40.341]both in and out of the classroom.
- [00:01:42.641][Adam Farero]: I'm meeting with her
- [00:01:43.822]one-on-one about the project that I was
- [00:01:45.241]working on for class, really helped me
- [00:01:47.121]understand the research process a lot
- [00:01:51.921]better than anything else I had previously
- [00:01:53.522]done in my college career.
- [00:01:54.981][Xiaquin Tu]: She's not only a great
- [00:01:56.601]adviser and mentor, she is also kind of
- [00:02:00.641]family members to you.
- [00:02:02.201][Mary Kalemann]: She really showed that
- [00:02:03.261]she wanted us to be our very best and
- [00:02:05.001]she really helped us to get there.
- [00:02:07.201][Narrator]: Dr. Molfese said her goal is
- [00:02:08.981]to help students identify their interests
- [00:02:11.341]and engage in high-quality research.
