Description
Most music educators recognize the importance of offering active and engaging learning experiences to their students. Orff Schulwerk is a child-centered approach that relies on rhythmic speech, physical movement, and musical play to actively involve students in educational music experiences. This approach uses poems, rhymes, games, songs, and dances - all of which are natural and enjoyable to children - as springboards to learning. The cultivation of imagination and creativity is an important goal of Orff Schulwerk.

- [00:00:03.576]It's very enriching personally
- [00:00:06.672]as a musician, become, to be
- [00:00:08.464]able to do lots of these wonderful
- [00:00:11.397]pieces with other, adult musicians
- [00:00:14.789]and teachers. But also,
- [00:00:16.724]there is so many things that I know
- [00:00:18.564]I will be able to take back.
- [00:00:20.025]They, have those tools then and
- [00:00:22.742]they can put them all together in
- [00:00:24.523]brand new ways, that nobody's ever
- [00:00:26.571]thought of before.
- [00:00:27.478]Movement class, the day that we talked
- [00:00:29.503]about natural elements, and we created
- [00:00:31.509]movement to go with earthquake and
- [00:00:33.301]Tsunami, that was pretty exciting.
- [00:00:35.253]I think it's great that,
- [00:00:36.490]everybody has such a,
- [00:00:37.930]just a very wide background,
- [00:00:40.665]we go from people that have been
- [00:00:42.257]teaching 20 years, to people who
- [00:00:44.576]have only had one or two years of
- [00:00:46.209]experience, and so we all have,
- [00:00:48.846]experience, but there's also so much
- [00:00:51.470]energy and enthusiasm,
- [00:00:53.315]the whole idea that the kids
- [00:00:55.907]become the, not just the performer,
- [00:00:59.064]but the creators, the composers.
- [00:01:01.260]Sometimes you go to a workshop,
- [00:01:03.010]and it looks like it works here, and
- [00:01:05.912]then you get it back to your kids and
- [00:01:07.948]it falls apart, but I can see that these
- [00:01:10.274]activities, that have been picked out
- [00:01:12.278]by all of my instructors, are geared
- [00:01:14.189]for being put into practice immediately
- [00:01:17.345]so I really appreciate that.
- [00:01:18.871][music]
- [00:01:24.504]The more experienced teachers bringing
- [00:01:26.325]their ideas in to the classroom and it's,
- [00:01:28.528]Just a great melting pot of,
- [00:01:31.070]those experiences and ideas that are
- [00:01:34.318]being brought and everybody's got their
- [00:01:36.734]specialty, but at the same time everybodys
- [00:01:38.845]able to bring something, everything we
- [00:01:42.132]have created this week is really cool.
- [00:01:44.082]I feel like I am going to utilize
- [00:01:46.962]every single thing I've learned these past
- [00:01:49.459]two weeks. Whatever you need to teach
- [00:01:51.784]your students it's really in your hands.
- [00:01:53.789]So, everything.
- [00:01:55.036]You're with a bunch of music teachers
- [00:01:56.966]creating beautiful music,
- [00:01:58.855]just out of space, it feels like
- [00:02:01.990]it just gets pulled out of space, and
- [00:02:03.996]it's really amazing and really moving
- [00:02:05.926]to see what a group of adults
- [00:02:07.504]can do.
- [00:02:08.732][sounds of music]
- [00:02:16.379]The way you combine all of the,
- [00:02:19.259]the four, the singing, the saying,
- [00:02:22.534]the dancing, and playing
- [00:02:24.762]So, the combination of how those all work
- [00:02:27.215]and not just individually, but together
- [00:02:29.480]I think is the biggest thing I've learned.
- [00:02:31.879]I like the idea of the rhythmic speech
- [00:02:35.069]patterns and, using that as foundation
- [00:02:38.396]for building on learning about,
- [00:02:40.605]rhythm patterns and movement
- [00:02:43.069]and how we can integrate that into
- [00:02:45.212]storytelling and really the whole
- [00:02:47.634]creative process of Orff.
