- [00:00:00.190][announcer] "Ladies and gentleman, the
- [00:00:02.089]2013 Cornhusker Marching Band
- [00:00:04.264]The Pride of all Nebraska" [music]
- [00:00:07.443]My name is Mark Carney, I am a senior,
- [00:00:10.480]majoring in both music performance and,
- [00:00:13.105]business economics, I'm from Omaha, NE
- [00:00:16.113]my parents live in Castle Rock Colorado,
- [00:00:18.278]I play in the front ensemble,
- [00:00:20.763]I'm percussion major and my rank is
- [00:00:23.696]the front ensemble.
- [00:00:25.093]The band gives you opportunities you will
- [00:00:27.259]never be able to duplicate in your life.
- [00:00:29.371]I joined the Cornhusker Marching Band,
- [00:00:31.203]honestly, because I have been watching
- [00:00:33.087]them since I was three, we always went
- [00:00:34.906]and watched the drum line perform.
- [00:00:36.532]We always were watching,
- [00:00:38.131]the battery warm-up, which they still do,
- [00:00:40.120]outside of Arch Hall, and that was just
- [00:00:42.008]yeah, that really stuck with me through
- [00:00:43.874]my childhood.
- [00:00:44.732]Seeing the band throughout time,
- [00:00:46.279]I always make my dad come early,
- [00:00:47.882]sometimes he would grumble about
- [00:00:49.610]that, "dad we can't miss the band
- [00:00:51.427]outside of Kimball", or "we can't miss the
- [00:00:53.701]drum line warmups"
- [00:00:55.093]and, so they were just kind of
- [00:00:56.639]like superstars on game day.
- [00:00:58.155]I always had to see them or else,
- [00:00:59.764]it didn't feel like a game day.
- [00:01:01.483]And then, at the games,
- [00:01:02.847]I would always try to listen for them, and
- [00:01:05.172]my favorite song, honestly was
- [00:01:07.433]March Grandioso, or commonly known as,
- [00:01:10.174]Bo Pelini song at this point.
- [00:01:11.785]uh, my favorite song was always that,
- [00:01:13.673]and I would just, I would clap really loud
- [00:01:17.182]and get really excited every time
- [00:01:19.017]I heard that.
- [00:01:20.382]So, moving forward as I continued to watch
- [00:01:22.888]games every year, they added a pit in 2000
- [00:01:25.080]and all of the sudden I was like,
- [00:01:26.686]"is that a xylophone on the sidelines?"
- [00:01:28.723]and I was in high school at the time,
- [00:01:30.590]and I had just started to play.
- [00:01:32.296]Well I was, I had just started to play,
- [00:01:34.183]it was before high school..
- [00:01:35.468]I thought that was the coolest
- [00:01:36.996]thing ever. I was like " you can play
- [00:01:38.781]xylophone for the University of Nebraska?"
- [00:01:41.176]I thought that was really neat.
- [00:01:42.723]So, when I finally graduated I knew where
- [00:01:44.678]I was going to go. I mean I had thought
- [00:01:46.550]about some out of state schools
- [00:01:48.045]but, in the end I was like "my whole room
- [00:01:50.011]has a mural of Memorial Stadium, I don't
- [00:01:51.925]think I can go anywhere else."
- [00:01:53.669]So, I joined the band, tried out,
- [00:01:56.250]I was kinda nervous my first audition
- [00:01:58.319]I practiced all summer and got in there,
- [00:02:01.295]when they finally said I made it,
- [00:02:03.163]I, it was a really unique...
- [00:02:05.050]It was a great experience in my life.
- [00:02:07.810]That I'll, remember for the rest
- [00:02:09.365]of my life.
- [00:02:10.208]When I saw my name on that wall,
- [00:02:12.469]it was, kinda like butterflies in the
- [00:02:15.124]stomach, I called my parents, first
- [00:02:17.354]and was like, "Dad, you know,"
- [00:02:19.739]I guess it takes some explanation, but
- [00:02:21.726]when I saw that name up on the board,
- [00:02:23.584]It made me, immediately think of these,
- [00:02:25.439]season ticket holders, we had been sitting
- [00:02:27.458]by for years. They had a cousin,
- [00:02:29.688]a cousin or a nephew, something like that,
- [00:02:32.192]a family member, that was down on
- [00:02:33.804]the field playing clarinet, and they
- [00:02:35.541]always talked about her like,
- [00:02:36.934]"oh, look at her, she's on the, corner
- [00:02:38.800]of the S."
- [00:02:39.518]So, when I saw my name up there,
- [00:02:41.540]I immediately thought, "my dad's gonna be
- [00:02:43.541]in the stands, talking to the season
- [00:02:45.348]ticket holders beside us" saying,
- [00:02:47.012]"Hey, that's my son over there on the
- [00:02:48.817]sideline." and then. So, I immediately
- [00:02:50.724]wanted to tell him and it was a really
- [00:02:52.558]proud moment for me.
- [00:02:53.722][sound of xylophone]
- [00:02:56.318]Yeah, being a part of the University
- [00:02:58.094]of Nebraska band is something that's,
- [00:02:59.802]I mean, Nationwide. No matter where you go
- [00:03:01.848]if you are talking to somebody,
- [00:03:03.374]"I go to the University of Nebrsaka"
- [00:03:05.115]They're like "Oh, that's cool".
- [00:03:06.695]yeah I play in the band", they're like
- [00:03:08.550]"Oh..", you know you get to play in
- [00:03:10.315]front of the ten best stadiums in college
- [00:03:12.822]football. I think the best.
- [00:03:14.146]But, you know people know that,
- [00:03:16.142]they know that you are tied into that
- [00:03:18.115]great tradition, and they know you get
- [00:03:19.947]to play in such a big stadium.
- [00:03:21.418][sound of crowd and a cymbal]
- [00:03:25.058]My name is Mark Carney I play for Nebraska
- [00:03:27.645][sound from the field]
- [00:03:29.297]"hye, hey, ho, ho Big Red..." (repeats)
