Description
After their return, the graduate students of the Skyros String Quartet sat down to talk about their experience of representing UNL on tour in China. Although difficult, the trip was artistically enriching and helped prepare them for the professional world.

- [00:00:52.643]lit up and it
- [00:00:53.588]was really magical.
- [00:00:55.413]we had no idea
- [00:00:56.854]we were going to
- [00:00:57.844]get this reaction.
- [00:00:58.784]from that.
- [00:00:59.589]and it was really
- [00:01:00.738]they all came
- [00:01:01.500]up afterword and were
- [00:01:02.575]just "you played a
- [00:01:03.485]piece from our region"
- [00:01:04.562]It was so special
- [00:01:05.382]to them.

- [00:01:07.077]when we played
- [00:01:08.081]the piece with them
- [00:01:09.242]Jasmine flower,
- [00:01:10.010]the piece we just
- [00:01:11.248]performed, here

- [00:01:14.853]really it bridges
- [00:01:15.792]the gap and
- [00:01:16.540]we can get
- [00:01:17.280]together and
- [00:01:18.208]communicate on
- [00:01:19.627]stage without
- [00:01:20.492]much rehearsal time.
- [00:01:21.749]And sit down and
- [00:01:24.075]have a conversation
- [00:01:25.691]with eachother
- [00:01:26.961]without rehearsal or
- [00:01:28.421]anything like that.
- [00:01:29.690]Language wasn't
- [00:01:30.740]a barrier, I think
- [00:01:31.600]for the audience
- [00:01:32.501]could see that
- [00:01:33.216]as well, not
- [00:01:33.920]just for us
- [00:01:34.666]performers on
- [00:01:35.467]stage, for the
- [00:01:36.224]audience to see
- [00:01:37.237]that we could
- [00:01:38.059]come over there and
- [00:01:39.274]perform together with
- [00:01:40.992]Chinese musicians
- [00:01:42.846]I think the
- [00:01:43.550]audience took
- [00:01:44.573]something away
- [00:01:45.469]from that.
- [00:01:46.398]I know they
- [00:01:47.550]probably took a lot
- [00:01:48.989]of things away, but
- [00:01:50.227]hopefully one of them
- [00:01:51.411]is that we are not so
- [00:01:52.520]different.
- [00:01:53.287]Like I said we
- [00:01:54.229]certainly encountered that
- [00:01:55.702]touring feeling, that's
- [00:01:56.714]a professional touring
- [00:01:57.973]setting. Where you are
- [00:02:00.448]performing everyday and
- [00:02:01.803]you don't have a lot
- [00:02:02.944]of in between time to
- [00:02:04.244]work something else
- [00:02:05.269]up, or to practice together
- [00:02:06.783]practice on your own.
- [00:02:07.945]so, just being thrown
- [00:02:09.321]into that professional
- [00:02:10.581]touring feeling
- [00:02:13.342]is making us learn
- [00:02:14.598]how to do that
- [00:02:15.696]in the future
- [00:02:16.423]we all already
- [00:02:17.287]went to the pacific
- [00:02:18.195]northwest, kind of took
- [00:02:19.400]what we learned in China
- [00:02:20.634]and were able to apply
- [00:02:21.839]it there.
- [00:02:22.575]It was just a fantastic experience.
- [00:02:24.091]One time, me and you
- [00:02:25.339]and possibly you...
- [00:02:26.491]went, and it was raining
- [00:02:27.846]so it was one of those
- [00:02:28.944]days where not so many
- [00:02:30.224]musicians were out
- [00:02:31.386]playing in the park
- [00:02:32.367]there weren't
- [00:02:33.167]quite as many
- [00:02:34.011]dancer's dancing and singers
- [00:02:35.504]We walked to this little
- [00:02:36.965]stone bridge and this man
- [00:02:39.535]was under the bridge
- [00:02:40.752]an elderly man, playing a
- [00:02:42.523]long flute of some kind
- [00:02:44.887]the rain was falling
- [00:02:47.054]and it was silent
- [00:02:48.087]it was one of those
- [00:02:49.304]timeless moments..
- [00:02:50.466]moments like that
- [00:02:51.704]happen throughout the
- [00:02:52.984]trip.

- [00:03:01.932]Many things from the
- [00:03:03.527]moment we took off
- [00:03:05.548]from the Lincoln Airport
- [00:03:06.924]and then landed
- [00:03:08.023]20 minutes later
- [00:03:09.143]or James had to go to
- [00:03:10.465]get that ticket.
- [00:03:11.595]It was the whole thing
- [00:03:14.358]"well some crazy thing just
- [00:03:17.643]happened and let's smile
- [00:03:19.179]and go with it"
- [00:03:20.278]And we just had to
- [00:03:21.398]have these crazy adventures
- [00:03:24.160]and know that it would all
- [00:03:25.953]turn out for the best.
- [00:03:27.211]and if you have that
- [00:03:28.630]attitude, it just came together.
