Recent Doctor of Musical Arts graduate Richard Viglucci talks about the many competitions he took part in and the grants he received during his coursework at UNL.

[00:00:09.449]My name is Richard Vigucci and I have
[00:00:12.719]just completed my Doctorate of Musical
[00:00:14.605]Arts in Clarinet Performance.
[00:00:16.591]I would say that my overall experience
[00:00:18.286]has been quite positive
[00:00:19.470]UNL, provided for me a lot of great
[00:00:22.796]opportunities. In terms of funding for
[00:00:25.987]grants and performance opportunities
[00:00:29.709]out in the public and also in school.
[00:00:31.991]UNL has several competitions that I was
[00:00:35.749]able to apply for and so, I ended up
[00:00:38.905]becoming one of the winners of the
[00:00:41.225]concerto competition as well as they have
[00:00:43.610]a chamber music competition and this
[00:00:45.583]competition with the resident,
[00:00:46.874]string quartet the "play with the Chiara
[00:00:49.093]competition" and, those opportunities
[00:00:52.367]were terrific.
[00:00:53.092]There's a lot of grant opportunities, and
[00:00:55.535]there's a lot more funding at this school
[00:00:58.183]than I found at others. So, I got money
[00:01:00.626]to travel to two different conferences
[00:01:05.118]as well as going to, Bulgaria and so,
[00:01:10.429]I think the opportunities here, for me
[00:01:12.776]I found were in funding and in competitions
[00:01:16.051]I received a Hixson-Lied, graduate fellowship
[00:01:20.113]and that was $4,500 stipend.
[00:01:23.505]That provided me the opportunities to
[00:01:25.713]focus more on practicing and doing what
[00:01:29.158]I needed to do in order to excel.
[00:01:31.387]UNL really prepared me to become
[00:01:33.542]a professional. To really take what I
[00:01:36.026]could already do and bring it to the
[00:01:37.293]next level.
[00:01:38.375]For prospective students considering UNL
[00:01:41.098]I would defiantly look into all of the
[00:01:43.606]different grant opportunities that they
[00:01:45.419]have here, as well as the location and
[00:01:47.549]the opportunities in Lincoln and outside
[00:01:49.996]of Lincoln, and so I would really look
[00:01:52.543]at the different funding opportunities
[00:01:54.642]Lincoln has, as well as the for
[00:01:56.423]performance in music, the various
[00:01:58.684]performing opportunities here. Because,
[00:02:00.978]I think what you'll find is that Lincoln
[00:02:02.918]has a lot more to offer than other schools
[00:02:04.710]in the country.
[00:02:06.514]I would say my lasting impression,
[00:02:09.066]will be my performance with the
[00:02:11.032]Chiara String Quartet.
[00:02:12.153]To just get to play with, those levels of
[00:02:15.322]musicians, I'm not sure that I will ever
[00:02:18.325]get an experience like that again, and
[00:02:19.824]I really think that that's gonna be the
[00:02:22.849]lasting memory that I think of when I
[00:02:24.847]think back on UNL.
