- [00:00:00.999](excited yelling, music and clapping)
- [00:00:11.292]Rockin' class was initially pretty intimidating for me,
- [00:00:14.252]because I started with zero experience with writing music and playing rock-type instruments.
- [00:00:19.566]Throughout this semester, I learned quite a bit about collaboration as it applies to making some "rocking" music.
- [00:00:26.453]I learned from my classmates, who excel at this kind of music, and had a ton of fun in the process.
- [00:00:31.203]It was a great experience to break out of my shell, and create our own songs and jam with our classmates.
- [00:00:37.819]I am now far more confident in this realm of music, which will benefit my future students.
- [00:00:43.538](music)
- [00:00:46.732]Being in the Pop Musicianship class was a benefit to me in several ways.
- [00:00:50.847]The initial sound-training project was eye-opening, because I had never analyzed pop songs in that sort of way -
- [00:00:55.785]like, what makes them popular and why do I like them.
- [00:00:58.641]It was really cool, then, to hear about other people's pieces, and why they like them, and what made those songs popular.
- [00:01:05.001]Working with a band was a great experience and learning - initially, how to set things up and get things running, where all the things get plugged in -
- [00:01:10.917]and then in learning how to work with a group, especially in something like rock band -
- [00:01:14.567]where, like, half the people want to jam out, and the other half the people want to have music right in front of them so they know what chords they're playing.
- [00:01:21.235]I love learning how all, like, those little parts fit together, and figuring out how to best build a song together.
- [00:01:27.301]As far as the original song-writing, that was crazy-cool.
- [00:01:30.452]I'm really self-conscious about all of it, because as a musician, I feel as though I should naturally be, like, really good at it.
- [00:01:35.551]And I'm just - I'm not. That being said, I'm fairly happy with the song that I wrote.
- [00:01:39.652]It was great to get, like, some emotions on page, and to come up with a melody,
- [00:01:42.572]and learn what kind of music I naturally fell into writing.
- [00:01:46.495](cheering and yelling)
- [00:01:49.459]Finally, this class was a great reminder that pop music is a valid art form,
- [00:01:53.775]and that we shouldn't shy away from teaching it in schools.
- [00:01:56.608]It was a great cap off to a senior year.
- [00:01:59.324](hard rock music)
- [00:02:01.624]This class, while coincidentally fulfilling my dream of "rocking," was very beneficial to my musicianship, and my teaching.
- [00:02:08.158]Before this class, I had never taken the opportunity to write a song. The experience was extremely enlightening.
- [00:02:13.291]It's a pure avenue for creative musicianship in terms of lyrics, intention, dynamics, phrasing, mood, texture, form, and so many other things.
- [00:02:22.163]Overall, the best advantages to this class were learning more about my own musicality, and having a great outlet to give to my own students.
- [00:02:30.004]And as a bonus, rocking is pretty fun.
- [00:02:32.538](clapping and cheering)
