Bob Woody talks about the value of giving popular music experiences to future music teachers.

- [00:00:14.928]The Popular Musicianship class is offered to our music education majors.
- [00:00:18.692]In it they learn to play typical rock instruments,
- [00:00:21.025]like electric guitar, bass, drumset, keyboard, synthesizer.
- [00:00:25.442]They organize themselves into rock bands and work with covers of popular songs of their choosing,
- [00:00:30.376]and also collaborate to create original music.
- [00:00:34.409]In terms of the goals of the class, not only do we want to
- [00:00:37.521]broaden the range of performance experiences they have,
- [00:00:41.005]but we want to convince them of the educational value of this type of approach to music.
- [00:00:46.120]We also want them to become more comfortable working with electronic instruments and equipment,
- [00:00:50.427]like amps and mixers, but perhaps most of all we want to engage them in activities
- [00:00:56.593]like song-writing, collaborative rehearsing, and spontaneity in performance.
- [00:01:02.343]We've found that students have great success when they take on these kinds of creative endeavors
- [00:01:07.542]in their native styles of music - the stuff that fills up their iPods.
- [00:01:12.326]Through the things that they do in this class, they learn just how robust their musicianship can be.

- [00:01:25.126]And they learn to be resourceful in their own musical growth.
- [00:01:28.327]Honestly, we as instructors do very little "teaching" per se. We merely present the challenges to students,
- [00:01:34.719]we offer them opportunities to meet those challenges, and give a little guidance along the way.
- [00:01:40.350]But the creative work that they end up doing is amazing, and it really inspires us.
- [00:01:46.227]For many of these college musicians, this experience marks the first time they've ever written a song,
- [00:01:52.465]or learned music by ear, or even performed the kind of music that they listen to the most in their lives.
- [00:01:58.692]For them, we think these newly developed musical skills and sensitivities really round out
- [00:02:04.870]the impressive musicianship that they've built through traditional school music.
- [00:02:09.708]As these students then go out and become teachers,
- [00:02:12.209]we think they have the potential to do some great things with their future students.
- [00:02:16.908]And that's our ultimate hope - that they'll allow the kids in their classrooms
- [00:02:20.868]to be creative through song-writing and improvisation,
- [00:02:23.872]and to be personally expressive through music performance and production.
