[00:00:24.680]decided to
[00:00:25.480]expand. We partnered with
[00:00:27.410]Westco and they tell students
[00:00:29.180]now about their
[00:00:30.100]research and we bring students
[00:00:31.180]here and tell them about our
[00:00:32.100]research. We have hands-on
[00:00:33.280]activities related to the
[00:00:34.550]research that's happening here
[00:00:36.040]at the center and we bring in
[00:00:37.480]about 250 students to
[00:00:38.920]experience that. In a cornfield
[00:00:40.960]southeast of Scotts Bluff, Westco
[00:00:43.340]had set up its farm equipment
[00:00:45.260]with stations and speakers. Greta
[00:00:47.740]Birch, WESTCO Precision Ag
[00:00:49.660]Specialist, said engaging with
[00:00:51.900]the FFA youth is a big part of
[00:00:53.740]the event. So we definitely
[00:00:55.460]stress some of the hands-on and
[00:00:57.200]demonstration-based activities.
[00:00:59.360]That's much more engaging than,
[00:01:01.340]you know, kind of the lecture-based.
[00:01:03.570]We let them, you know, they're
[00:01:05.340]taking hay samples over there,
[00:01:07.240]they're identifying different
[00:01:08.510]types of seed over there, they're
[00:01:09.810]walking through the cornfield
[00:01:11.000]over
[00:01:11.280]here. So that's what we do day-to-day,
[00:01:13.180]you know, we're out there with
[00:01:14.600]our customers and
[00:01:15.580]so it just gives them some
[00:01:17.270]exposure to the options out
[00:01:19.130]there. In agreement with her is
[00:01:21.500]Cole Vejraska, WESTCO Agronomy
[00:01:23.380]Sales Manager. He said it's
[00:01:24.910]important to expose the high
[00:01:26.460]schoolers
[00:01:27.100]to what's out there. I think
[00:01:29.130]getting kids exposure to
[00:01:30.860]different career paths in ag is
[00:01:33.070]important to
[00:01:33.760]get them to come back to
[00:01:35.510]western Nebraska and
[00:01:37.190]agriculture in general. I think
[00:01:39.880]it's gaining
[00:01:41.000]importance because I think we're
[00:01:43.220]seeing a lot of young people
[00:01:44.950]not want to be in ag or choose
[00:01:46.710]not
[00:01:47.080]to be an ag and I think the
[00:01:48.690]opportunities that they're
[00:01:50.660]experiencing are at least then
[00:01:52.790]letting
[00:01:53.480]them know they're there and it's
[00:01:55.250]eye-opening to see. I mean I've
[00:01:57.180]had some questions of you mean
[00:01:58.860]I can really do that as a
[00:02:00.130]career? Absolutely you can and
[00:02:01.850]ag is a good avenue to go with
[00:02:03.460]it.
[00:02:03.740]While the youth visited with agronomists
[00:02:05.990]in the field they also visited
[00:02:07.640]with research scientists
[00:02:09.080]at the extension center. White
[00:02:10.720]said it's important for the
[00:02:12.080]youth and the public to know
[00:02:13.430]what's
[00:02:13.880]available to them. Extension is
[00:02:16.460]across the state. We're in
[00:02:18.580]every county and this center is
[00:02:20.890]one of the big research hubs
[00:02:22.860]for the state where we're doing
[00:02:24.410]all the panhandle specific
[00:02:25.960]research so it's good that they
[00:02:27.710]know what's going on out here.
[00:02:29.520]The youth visited stations at
[00:02:31.220]both places examining plant
[00:02:32.860]disease and insects and learned
[00:02:34.700]about finances in automatic
[00:02:36.410]lawnmowers. For the UNL Panhandle
