[00:00:07.416]any site you interact with online,
[00:00:10.541]there's a lot of data being collected about people
[00:00:13.458]and laws regulate what information companies can collect,
[00:00:17.916]under what circumstances and what they can do with that data.
[00:00:22.041]But there are in fact very few laws
[00:00:25.000]that provide any real specific guidance or constraints
[00:00:29.708]on what companies and institutions can do.
[00:00:38.458]In most cases,
[00:00:40.000]people have minimal choice in terms of using technology.
[00:00:43.625]They need to use certain technologies to be part of mainstream society,
[00:00:48.583]to have their children go to a public school,
[00:00:51.416]to be employed.
[00:00:53.250]And therefore the research has really shifted from
[00:00:57.833]how do we make sure people understand what's happening,
[00:01:00.583]to how do we actually make sure
[00:01:02.666]that the entities that collect and use this data
[00:01:04.875]are doing so responsibly?
[00:01:22.458]Everyone has seen those privacy policies
[00:01:25.083]and everyone, including me, just clicks,
[00:01:27.833]“I agree.”
[00:01:29.333]And my work says that is not enough,
[00:01:32.666]that we need more to make sure that the information
[00:01:34.833]that's being collected about us and is being used to shape our lives
[00:01:39.125]and that of our children, is used responsibly, is accurate,
[00:01:43.416]and promotes equity and democracy
[00:01:46.333]as opposed to degrading them.
[00:01:49.250]People say privacy is dead, but my students and I disagree.
[00:01:53.166]Privacy may be different than it has been in the past,
[00:01:57.458]but people still care about
[00:01:59.500]the information that's available about them
[00:02:01.791]and how it can be used.
