We want to acknowledge and apologize for the technical issues that affected the live broadcast of today’s August 2025 Commencement ceremony. Due to an ongoing transition of our control rooms to a new stadium location, we encountered unexpected challenges with cameras and audio feeds. While we were able to restore two of the three camera feeds and correct the stream audio during the event, captioning was unfortunately unavailable as a result.

- [00:21:59.550]it up. And we thank you for
- [00:22:01.620]your service to the university
- [00:22:03.970]and to our graduates.
- [00:22:05.780]Congratulations.
- [00:22:14.300]I want to make sure he can read
- [00:22:23.730]those names, so we're going to
- [00:22:33.960]hold his gift for a little
- [00:22:42.300]while.
- [00:22:43.980]We are deeply grateful to our
- [00:22:45.660]university faculty and staff
- [00:22:47.410]for their hard work in helping
- [00:22:49.160]our
- [00:22:49.440]students reach their
- [00:22:50.850]educational goals.
- [00:22:52.360]I would ask all faculty and
- [00:22:53.810]staff throughout the arena to
- [00:22:55.460]please stand if you're able so
- [00:22:57.160]that our graduating class might
- [00:22:59.420]express their deep appreciation
- [00:23:01.750]for the contributions you
- [00:23:03.640]have made to their education.
- [00:23:06.100]Please stand, all faculty and
- [00:23:07.370]staff.
- [00:23:13.980]Thank you all. Thank you so
- [00:23:15.330]very much. It is now my
- [00:23:17.060]privilege to invite to the
- [00:23:19.720]podium University President
- [00:23:22.760]Jeffrey P. Gold. President Gold
- [00:23:26.500]has held several positions in
- [00:23:29.520]the University of Nebraska
- [00:23:32.310]system since 2014, including
- [00:23:36.440]Chancellor of the University of
- [00:23:39.720]Nebraska Medical Center,
- [00:23:43.980]of the University of Nebraska
- [00:23:46.310]at Omaha, and Executive Vice
- [00:23:48.630]President and Provost.
- [00:23:50.780]Most recently, he was selected
- [00:23:53.210]by the Board of Regents to
- [00:23:55.100]serve as President of the
- [00:23:56.990]University
- [00:23:57.940]of Nebraska System, a role that
- [00:24:01.320]he began last summer. Now,
- [00:24:04.450]today is also a very special
- [00:24:07.330]day
- [00:24:07.820]for President Gold. It is his
- [00:24:09.760]birthday. Mr. President, I'd
- [00:24:12.000]ask you to join me here at the
- [00:24:13.820]Podium please. Our special
- [00:24:24.890]event has provided a little bit
- [00:24:27.150]of a birthday cake for our
- [00:24:28.970]president.
- [00:24:30.100]We are so happy to have the
- [00:24:31.560]opportunity to serve with
- [00:24:33.080]President Gold, who is leading
- [00:24:35.000]us on an odyssey to the
- [00:24:36.260]extraordinary, and I have the
- [00:24:38.120]privilege of working with him
- [00:24:39.920]every
- [00:24:40.400]day and I'm so excited about
- [00:24:42.470]the future and about his
- [00:24:44.270]leadership of the university.
- [00:24:46.820]I'm going to take the cake from
- [00:24:48.860]President Gold.
- [00:24:50.220]I'm going to go out to my truck
- [00:24:51.710]and enjoy it while he gives his
- [00:24:53.290]remarks and whatever's
- [00:24:54.680]left he can take home with him.
- [00:24:56.960]But ladies and gentlemen,
- [00:24:58.650]please officially help me
- [00:25:00.260]welcome to the podium our
- [00:25:01.800]system president,
- [00:25:03.160]President Jeffrey P. Gold.
- [00:25:05.040]Happy birthday.
- [00:25:06.040]Thank you.
- [00:25:10.400]Well, thank you, Chancellor
- [00:25:13.410]Bennett. It is a great honor to
- [00:25:16.520]be with you this morning. I
- [00:25:19.350]extend a very warm welcome to
- [00:25:21.140]you. I decided many years ago
- [00:25:23.060]that I was not going to
- [00:25:24.390]celebrate any more birthdays.
- [00:25:26.470]They would just be anniversaries
- [00:25:28.550]of my 29th. So this is just
- [00:25:30.570]another one of those.
- [00:25:33.540]I want to, on behalf of the
- [00:25:35.420]University of Nebraska System,
- [00:25:37.840]extend my very warm welcome to
- [00:25:39.990]all of you today, to the
- [00:25:41.830]parents, friends, significant
- [00:25:44.320]loved ones of our graduates.
- [00:25:46.600]Thank you for being here, and
- [00:25:48.500]thank you so much for
- [00:25:49.790]supporting our graduates to
- [00:25:51.630]this day.
- [00:25:53.960]Regrettably, I will tell you
- [00:25:55.710]from personal experience, they
- [00:25:57.690]never quite get off the payroll,
- [00:25:59.760]but I will tell you that is one
- [00:26:01.740]of the best parts of life as
- [00:26:03.540]you see them spread their wings
- [00:26:05.690]and succeed.
- [00:26:07.620]To the faculty and staff, to
- [00:26:09.640]the leadership of this great
- [00:26:11.670]university, I also extend my
- [00:26:13.790]gratitude and thanks. These are
- [00:26:16.250]difficult days for many
- [00:26:17.740]different reasons, but the
- [00:26:19.520]teamwork, the camaraderie, the
- [00:26:21.680]vision, the enthusiasm for the
- [00:26:23.690]future has never been higher
- [00:26:25.480]and I've never been more proud
- [00:26:27.330]to be your president and never
- [00:26:29.190]been more proud to be a Nebraskan.
- [00:26:31.660]I also want to extend my
- [00:26:34.040]special congratulations and
- [00:26:37.200]thanks to our graduates. I
- [00:26:40.220]thank you for trusting us with
- [00:26:42.160]your academic journey culminating
- [00:26:44.860]in today's ceremony. I
- [00:26:46.750]congratulate you on your
- [00:26:48.650]success.
- [00:26:49.660]And I will tell you that the
- [00:26:52.080]value of a higher education
- [00:26:54.610]degree in our society and
- [00:26:56.920]globally has never been higher.
- [00:26:59.660]It's the opportunity to
- [00:27:00.910]celebrate, and I do hope you
- [00:27:02.420]celebrate wisely, but I do hope
- [00:27:04.120]you celebrate this day.
- [00:27:05.660]But I also hope you realize
- [00:27:07.870]that with it comes great
- [00:27:09.890]responsibility, leadership,
- [00:27:12.720]dedication, and so much more.
- [00:27:15.660]I always share three pieces of
- [00:27:17.600]advice at the time of
- [00:27:18.910]commencement.
- [00:27:20.160]And the first, of course, and
- [00:27:22.400]always top of the list, is to
- [00:27:24.470]take care of yourself.
- [00:27:26.400]These are very complex times
- [00:27:28.750]that we live in, confusing in
- [00:27:31.180]many different ways.
- [00:27:33.260]They have always been and they
- [00:27:34.950]will always be.
- [00:27:36.040]But making sure that you take
- [00:27:37.590]care of yourself, and I don't
- [00:27:39.200]just mean medically,
- [00:27:40.540]but I mean emotionally,
- [00:27:42.180]spiritually, and so many other
- [00:27:44.290]ways, has never been more
- [00:27:45.990]important.
- [00:27:47.080]Rely on each other.
- [00:27:48.620]Rely on your family and friends.
- [00:27:50.920]Don't be afraid to ask for help
- [00:27:52.840]if you ever need it.
- [00:27:54.340]Second, take care of each other.
- [00:27:57.140]You have formed bonds with
- [00:27:59.220]friends in this cohort, in
- [00:28:01.410]other parts of the university,
- [00:28:04.040]with your faculty, with members
- [00:28:05.920]of the staff, the alumni
- [00:28:07.310]organization, people you will
- [00:28:09.110]meet
- [00:28:09.440]and work with during your
- [00:28:10.960]career.
- [00:28:11.640]The more you take care of each
- [00:28:13.080]other,
- [00:28:13.560]the more people will take care
- [00:28:15.000]of you.
- [00:28:15.500]And I'll tell you the pleasure
- [00:28:17.110]and satisfaction that comes
- [00:28:18.760]for caring for others for
- [00:28:20.300]somebody that spent 25 years
- [00:28:22.380]of my life in the operating
- [00:28:23.930]room taking care
- [00:28:24.960]of other people's children is a
- [00:28:27.060]sense
- [00:28:27.500]of satisfaction that is immeasurable.
- [00:28:31.200]And then finally and very
- [00:28:32.460]importantly
- [00:28:33.160]at this time is please take
- [00:28:34.970]care of your community.
- [00:28:36.880]As I said, the value of a
- [00:28:38.280]higher education degree has
- [00:28:39.970]never been more important. Implicit
- [00:28:42.370]in that is leadership in your
- [00:28:44.100]community. Not that we would
- [00:28:45.990]ever want to teach you what to
- [00:28:47.720]think, but almost certainly as
- [00:28:49.680]you're sitting here, we have
- [00:28:51.490]hopefully taught you how to
- [00:28:53.170]think, how to address critical
- [00:28:55.130]issues, how to solve complex
- [00:28:56.940]problems, and how to build a
- [00:28:58.680]future.
- [00:28:59.700]I will close, and I could go on
- [00:29:02.200]for a long time, but I promised
- [00:29:04.800]Chancellor Bennett I would not,
- [00:29:07.600]to say that Abraham Lincoln was
- [00:29:10.200]fond of quoting that the only
- [00:29:12.600]way to truly see the future is
- [00:29:15.000]to build it.
- [00:29:16.260]And that future is now in your
- [00:29:18.650]hands.
- [00:29:19.460]Thank you, and God's blessing
- [00:29:21.810]on your journey.
- [00:29:29.700]Thank you, President Gold, and
- [00:29:32.820]again, happy, happy birthday.
- [00:29:36.240]It is now my pleasure to
- [00:29:37.120]welcome to the podium the Chair
- [00:29:38.970]of the Board of Regents, Regent
- [00:29:41.050]Paul Kenney, who will be
- [00:29:42.660]followed by UNL Student Regent
- [00:29:44.680]and President of the
- [00:29:45.990]Association of Students at the
- [00:29:48.010]University of Nebraska, Libby
- [00:29:50.100]Wilkins. Regent Kenney.
- [00:29:59.700]Thank you, Chancellor Bennett,
- [00:30:02.210]for the opportunity to speak to
- [00:30:04.460]the graduates, their families
- [00:30:06.810]and friends. Good morning. I'm
- [00:30:09.410]proud to be here on behalf of
- [00:30:11.390]the Regents, including Jack and
- [00:30:13.830]Libby, to celebrate the class,
- [00:30:16.250]Husker Class of 2025. I'm your
- [00:30:19.280]chairman from Amherst, Nebraska.
- [00:30:24.660]I'd also like to congratulate
- [00:30:26.580]President Gold for his family
- [00:30:28.510]flying in from all around the
- [00:30:30.350]country, and he's here to help
- [00:30:32.380]celebrate your graduation.
- [00:30:34.320]Commencement is truly a team
- [00:30:36.600]effort, so I want to
- [00:30:38.220]congratulate everyone in this
- [00:30:40.720]arena who played a part in
- [00:30:42.730]helping our students reach this
- [00:30:45.330]point.
- [00:30:46.280]This moment belongs to you.
- [00:30:51.060]Days like today are the best
- [00:30:52.550]part of serving the University
- [00:30:54.250]of Nebraska. Commencement
- [00:30:56.200]reminds us of the fundamental
- [00:30:58.360]mission of our university. We
- [00:31:00.700]have the greatest privilege in
- [00:31:02.940]the world, helping prepare the
- [00:31:05.280]next generation of American
- [00:31:07.350]leaders.
- [00:31:10.020]Looking out at our graduates
- [00:31:12.040]today and seeing the pride and
- [00:31:14.140]joy on the faces of their
- [00:31:15.820]family, friends, and professors,
- [00:31:18.500]it is clear to me we are
- [00:31:20.020]delivering on that mission.
- [00:31:22.360]Our world today needs
- [00:31:24.080]thoughtful, principled leaders
- [00:31:26.850]who understand and serve the
- [00:31:29.130]purpose that is better than
- [00:31:31.320]themselves, leaders like you.
- [00:31:34.220]We all have a responsibility to
- [00:31:37.010]serve the greater good.
- [00:31:40.020]And we can do our part, no
- [00:31:41.990]matter what path we take in
- [00:31:44.080]community involvement.
- [00:31:46.300]Whether you choose to start
- [00:31:48.120]your own business, serve in the
- [00:31:50.260]military, pursue elected office,
- [00:31:52.780]or volunteer in the community,
- [00:31:55.010]we have a role in making
- [00:31:56.570]Nebraska a better place to live,
- [00:31:58.960]work, and raise our family.
- [00:32:02.240]Your University of Nebraska
- [00:32:03.970]education has prepared you well
- [00:32:05.910]for this life of leadership
- [00:32:07.640]and service.
- [00:32:09.600]In fact, you will never be a
- [00:32:11.760]better time to take a Nebraska
- [00:32:14.110]degree into the world.
- [00:32:16.160]You have learned valuable
- [00:32:18.300]lessons at UNL, both inside and
- [00:32:20.910]outside the classroom.
- [00:32:23.160]You have learned how to be
- [00:32:25.350]resilient, compassionate, and
- [00:32:28.380]curious.
- [00:32:29.480]Our faculty and staff have
- [00:32:32.200]given you the tools to grow and
- [00:32:35.290]succeed.
- [00:32:36.600]These lessons will carry you
- [00:32:38.950]far, and while you're earning a
- [00:32:41.580]degree today, my hope is
- [00:32:43.760]only one chapter of a lifetime
- [00:32:46.150]of learning for all of you.
- [00:32:48.520]When you're a student of life,
- [00:32:49.990]you're always learning, not
- [00:32:51.410]only to meet the challenges
- [00:32:52.820]that come your way, but to lead,
- [00:32:55.340]impact the people around you,
- [00:32:57.680]and build an even better
- [00:32:59.520]future for us all.
- [00:33:01.920]Congratulations again on behalf
- [00:33:04.070]of the Board of Regents.
- [00:33:05.800]We know we will do great things
- [00:33:07.310]and will be cheering you every
- [00:33:08.820]step of the way.
- [00:33:09.820]Go Big Red.
- [00:33:10.820]Good morning.
- [00:33:11.820]I'm Libby Wilkins.
- [00:33:12.820]I'm the UNL student body
- [00:33:18.470]president and student regent.
- [00:33:26.460]I promise I'll make this quick.
- [00:33:27.860]But first of all, I just want
- [00:33:29.810]to say congratulations.
- [00:33:31.740]Today marks the end of a
- [00:33:33.400]chapter.
- [00:33:34.340]culmination of years of effort,
- [00:33:36.680]commitment, and perseverance.
- [00:33:39.190]Graduation is often a time
- [00:33:41.120]when we recognize all the
- [00:33:42.720]academic achievements a
- [00:33:44.320]graduate accomplishes. Somehow,
- [00:33:46.750]we forget
- [00:33:47.420]to include the accolades one
- [00:33:49.110]receives outside the classroom
- [00:33:51.030]and the people we become
- [00:33:52.450]throughout
- [00:33:53.260]our journeys. The University of
- [00:33:55.580]Nebraska-Lincoln has provided
- [00:33:57.740]more than academic knowledge.
- [00:34:00.060]It has challenged us to think
- [00:34:01.790]critically, to strive for
- [00:34:03.460]continuous growth, and to
- [00:34:05.130]better
- [00:34:05.640]our communities on campus and
- [00:34:08.680]beyond.
- [00:34:09.820]These are not small lessons.
- [00:34:11.560]They are the foundation for
- [00:34:13.850]meaningful impact when we leave
- [00:34:16.520]dear old Nebraska U.
- [00:34:18.460]So as you leave this university
- [00:34:20.290]today, you will inevitably
- [00:34:21.980]enter a world that asks a
- [00:34:23.480]great deal of you.
- [00:34:25.700]A world that needs you.
- [00:34:28.640]I look towards the future with
- [00:34:30.720]hope because each one of you is
- [00:34:32.810]well prepared to challenge
- [00:34:34.840]the status quo, fight against
- [00:34:37.470]complacency, and make your mark.
- [00:34:40.700]Congratulations and Go Big Red!
- [00:34:49.740]Thank you, Regent Kenney.
- [00:34:51.240]Thank you, Regent Wilkins.
- [00:34:53.180]Now to the main event.
- [00:34:54.180]I know you thought we would
- [00:34:55.590]never get to the conferral of
- [00:34:57.130]degrees, but we have arrived
- [00:34:58.800]at that moment, and it's an
- [00:35:00.550]exciting moment.
- [00:35:01.900]I invite Dr. Deborah Hope,
