- [00:00:06.083]Welcome, Huskers.
- [00:00:07.666]Where you stand right now is deeply rooted
- [00:00:10.500]in tradition, community and Husker pride.
- [00:00:14.125]Whether you grew up going to football games in this very stadium
- [00:00:17.750]or are stepping into it for the first time,
- [00:00:20.250]we are so glad you're here.
- [00:00:22.750]Welcome to campus,
- [00:00:24.208]your home away from home for the next chapter.
- [00:00:27.875]When I first got to UNL, three years ago,
- [00:00:30.333]I was equally excited and overwhelmed
- [00:00:32.916]by the endless possibilities.
- [00:00:34.875]There were so many ways to get involved.
- [00:00:36.958]So many people to meet and so much to learn.
- [00:00:40.208]Now, as I begin my senior year,
- [00:00:42.708]I can't help but reflect on how much I've grown,
- [00:00:45.750]both through the experience as I've sought out
- [00:00:48.458]and the people who have helped shape me along the way.
- [00:00:52.041]You'll learn a great deal in your classes,
- [00:00:54.208]but some of your most meaningful growth
- [00:00:56.333]will happen outside the classroom.
- [00:00:58.791]I encourage you to find ways to step outside your comfort zone,
- [00:01:02.916]think critically, and strive to grow in character and integrity.
- [00:01:07.833]My hope for you is that along the way, you'll find your people,
- [00:01:11.750]the ones you can count on, learn from, and lean on.
- [00:01:15.708]For me, that's been at ASUN, the student government at UNL,
- [00:01:19.791]my sorority, Chi Omega, and my faith community, Husker Catholic.
- [00:01:24.666]If I can leave you with one piece of advice, it's this:
- [00:01:28.000]Embrace your time as a Husker fully
- [00:01:31.041]and look for ways to invest in others as much as you invest in yourself.
- [00:01:36.083]Class of 2029,
- [00:01:38.125]welcome to your home away from home.
- [00:01:40.583]And as always,
- [00:01:41.833]Go Big Red.
- [00:01:46.041]Hey, Huskers.
- [00:01:46.916]Welcome to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:01:49.375]I'm T.J. McDowell, your Dean of Students.
- [00:01:52.541]I'm so glad you decided to join our community.
- [00:01:55.333]You're part of a class of new students from all over Nebraska,
- [00:01:58.250]the country and the world.
- [00:02:00.541]You're going to learn and grow inside and outside of the classroom.
- [00:02:04.541]My role, and that of the entire Student Life team,
- [00:02:07.125]is to support you as you navigate this part of your journey.
- [00:02:10.708]We offer resources to help you thrive,
- [00:02:12.916]including fun and educational events,
- [00:02:15.458]leadership opportunities, and wellbeing support.
- [00:02:18.958]There is a place for you here.
- [00:02:20.875]You matter to us.
- [00:02:23.000]If you're like me, when I started college, some 35 years ago,
- [00:02:26.791]as a first generation student, you may be feeling a variety of emotions
- [00:02:30.666]including anxiety, fear, excitement, and probably a little overwhelmed.
- [00:02:36.291]I want you to know that is natural and you are not alone.
- [00:02:39.625]There's a team of amazing faculty, staff, and peers
- [00:02:42.958]who care about you and your success.
- [00:02:45.708]Here are some tips to help you be successful.
- [00:02:48.833]Study hard.
- [00:02:50.125]Go to class and do your homework.
- [00:02:52.583]Earning a college degree was not easy for me.
- [00:02:54.666]It required me to sacrifice to do the necessary work.
- [00:02:58.958]Find an “accountability partner”
- [00:03:00.583]to help you stay focused and disciplined on your goals.
- [00:03:04.250]I was lucky that I had a friend who was a peer
- [00:03:07.041]and a role model, who pushed me to be the best version of myself.
- [00:03:10.375]When I was in college.
- [00:03:12.500]Get involved.
- [00:03:13.500]My college experience was enriched by my engagement
- [00:03:16.375]with recognized student organizations,
- [00:03:18.375]running for student government,
- [00:03:20.041]serving as a resident assistant and playing intramural sports.
- [00:03:23.541]Ask for help.
- [00:03:25.041]One of the secrets of successful students is they ask for help when they need it.
- [00:03:28.916]I learned that when I was in college
- [00:03:30.666]if I needed help academically,
- [00:03:32.375]my professors were supportive.
- [00:03:34.916]I also took advantage of other resources,
- [00:03:37.583]including counseling, to help me navigate some tough times in my life.
- [00:03:41.708]You got this.
- [00:03:42.750]And we have your back.
- [00:03:44.208]Welcome home.
- [00:03:45.375]I look forward to meeting you,
- [00:03:46.875]and Go Big Red.
