- [00:00:00.000]Hey, there! I’m Brittany Spieker, your Food, Nutrition, and Health
- [00:00:03.000]Extension Educator serving north central Nebraska and I’m excited to
- [00:00:07.000]wish you a happy National Farmer’s Market Week - happening August 3rd-9th!
- [00:00:12.620]From bakers and canners to ranchers and growers,
- [00:00:16.060]your local farmer’s market offers more than just fresh food -
- [00:00:18.940]it’s a hub for connection, learning, and community building.
- [00:00:23.015]Whether you’re grabbing sweet corn, vine-ripened tomatoes,
- [00:00:27.015]farm-raised beef, or homemade baked goods,
- [00:00:29.315]you’re supporting the people who help make our towns thrive.
- [00:00:33.175]And one of the best ways to support them is by eating with the seasons.
- [00:00:37.520]Nebraska summer produce is at its peak - everything from cucumbers,
- [00:00:42.200]tomatoes, and zucchini to melons and various berries.
- [00:00:46.492]Seasonal eating isn’t just a trend - it’s practical.
- [00:00:50.725]In-season produce often tastes better,
- [00:00:53.300]costs less, and travels fewer miles to your plate.
- [00:00:56.806]And when you buy it at a farmer’s market,
- [00:00:59.106]there’s a good chance it was picked within the last 24 hours.
- [00:01:02.286]Talk about farm to fork!
- [00:01:05.100]So here are a few simple tips to make
- [00:01:08.480]this seasonal food even more enjoyable:
- [00:01:11.540]Tip #1: Grill it up – Toss zucchini, bell peppers,
- [00:01:14.749]or sweet corn on the grill for easy, healthy sides.
- [00:01:19.400]Tip #2: Preserve your bounty –
- [00:01:22.298]Try your hand at freezing green beans or canning homemade salsa.
- [00:01:27.040]Believe me, you’ll thank yourself come wintertime.
- [00:01:30.000]Tip #3: Get the kids involved
- [00:01:32.560]Let them pick out a new fruit or veggie
- [00:01:35.000]at the farmer’s market and help you prepare it at home.
- [00:01:37.660]It’s a great way to try new foods and teach healthy habits early on.
- [00:01:41.922]Tip #4: Think beyond dinner
- [00:01:45.922]Add fresh berries to yogurt for a quick, easy snack, herbs to scrambled
- [00:01:49.922]eggs at breakfast, or sliced cucumbers to your water for extra flavor.
- [00:01:55.182]If you're not sure how to prepare or
- [00:01:58.002]cook something you picked up - don’t worry.
- [00:02:00.702]That’s where Nebraska Extension comes in!
- [00:02:02.762]Our team offers free, research-based resources on everything
- [00:02:06.762]from cooking and meal planning to food preservation and
