The 4-H youth development program helps youth become beyond ready for their future. County and state fairs are an opportunity for many 4-H members to showcase the projects and skills they've worked on throughout the year.
At the 2025 Lancaster County Super Fair, 20 4-H'ers and 5 alumni shared how their 4-H fair experiences make them "beyond ready" for their life and career.

- [00:00:18.000]as a home health nurse
- [00:00:19.000]are by projects of first aid,
- [00:00:21.470]health and safety, on top of
- [00:00:23.810]the STEM classes that we have.
- [00:00:26.000]It's taught me so much about
- [00:00:27.420]the importance of community.
- [00:00:29.000]Our friends, the Reimers, they
- [00:00:30.880]were born in Lincoln, didn't
- [00:00:32.410]live on a farm, and now they
- [00:00:33.840]show cattle with us.
- [00:00:35.000]4-H has helped me become beyond
- [00:00:37.050]ready for life through growing
- [00:00:39.000]communication, leadership, and
- [00:00:41.600]problem-solving skills.
- [00:00:43.000]4-H has helped spark an
- [00:00:44.320]interest in me in poultry to
- [00:00:45.750]start a career in them,
- [00:00:47.000]and I've already started
- [00:00:48.190]breeding and selling my own
- [00:00:49.540]birds.
- [00:00:50.000]I've also been training her to
- [00:00:51.740]be a therapy dog so she can go
- [00:00:53.360]to different nursing homes.
- [00:00:55.000]And through these acts of
- [00:00:55.630]community,
- [00:00:56.000]it's been showing me that using
- [00:00:58.080]my resources and my
- [00:00:59.270]opportunities,
- [00:01:00.000]it can help so many different
- [00:01:01.480]people.
- [00:01:02.000]There are a number of skills I
- [00:01:03.680]learned in 4-H that I use all
- [00:01:05.430]the time.
- [00:01:06.000]Woodworking and metal finishing
- [00:01:09.270]skills on my lab mechanic end
- [00:01:11.370]of things.
- [00:01:12.000]From 4-H, I have learned
- [00:01:13.520]resilience and patience from
- [00:01:15.410]things that don't always go my
- [00:01:17.710]way
- [00:01:18.000]and just having to try again
- [00:01:19.480]and practice and regroup for
- [00:01:21.020]the next time.
- [00:01:22.000]I know this will help me in my
- [00:01:23.150]future when something goes
- [00:01:24.280]wrong in life.
- [00:01:25.000]4-H is helping me learn how to
- [00:01:27.370]talk in a microphone,
- [00:01:29.000]learn about animals, and learn
- [00:01:31.670]how to make friends.
- [00:01:33.000]4-H is teaching me a whole
- [00:01:33.980]bunch of different things,
- [00:01:35.000]like how to do things correctly
- [00:01:37.000]and how, "Hmm, how could I do
- [00:01:38.960]this differently?"
- [00:01:40.000]or, "Hmm, I wonder if this
- [00:01:41.340]would look better than that?"
- [00:01:43.000]4-H has taught me leadership,
- [00:01:44.590]planning and organizing, and
- [00:01:46.140]self-motivation.
- [00:01:47.000]Doing my 4-H project has better
- [00:01:49.640]prepared me for my future
- [00:01:51.100]because of my great work ethic.
- [00:01:54.000]I feel like all the hard work
- [00:01:55.410]that I've done in the barn each
- [00:01:57.360]morning and each night has
- [00:01:59.150]really paid off.
- [00:02:00.000]When we are at the fair and we
- [00:02:01.540]have all these fairgoers, we
- [00:02:03.200]get to talk to them.
- [00:02:04.000]We get to explain our projects
- [00:02:05.590]to them and just communicate
- [00:02:07.000]our ideas and our thoughts
- [00:02:08.990]effectively and clearly.
- [00:02:11.000]And 4-H has really helped
- [00:02:12.610]prepare me to do this later on
- [00:02:14.280]in life.
- [00:02:15.000]4-H helps me get introduced to
- [00:02:17.270]plants, growing things, flowers,
- [00:02:20.070]fruits and vegetables, which
- [00:02:21.750]really piqued my interest.
- [00:02:23.000]And then later on in life led
- [00:02:24.510]me to become an agronomist and
- [00:02:26.150]I work with plants and farmers
- [00:02:27.460]every day.
- [00:02:28.000]It's also helped me get some
- [00:02:29.660]teamwork with some of the clubs
- [00:02:31.560]I'm in so that we can all work
- [00:02:33.330]together to make our 4-H
- [00:02:34.740]animals have a nice fair.
- [00:02:37.000]And it also helps me with
- [00:02:38.800]communication, so I'm better at
- [00:02:41.570]showing my chicken and being
- [00:02:43.990]less shy to the judge.
- [00:02:46.000]4-H has prepared me to be ready
- [00:02:48.050]for life by giving me valuable
- [00:02:49.970]skills like perseverance.
- [00:02:52.000]It takes a lot of time and
- [00:02:54.080]effort and a lot of repeated
- [00:02:55.900]tries to get a project done.
- [00:02:58.000]And also a skill I've learned
- [00:02:59.630]is time management.
- [00:03:01.000]4-H has prepared me for life by
- [00:03:03.550]allowing me to show and raise
- [00:03:05.310]animals, which has inspired me
- [00:03:07.090]to follow a veterinary science
- [00:03:08.440]career.
- [00:03:09.000]It's made me ready for life. I've
- [00:03:11.540]been able to adapt, be it
- [00:03:14.400]cooking or whatever, woodworking.
- [00:03:19.000]Some ways 4-H is preparing me
- [00:03:21.000]is by teaching me science.
- [00:03:21.000]Some ways 4-H is preparing me
- [00:03:21.950]is by teaching me social skills
- [00:03:23.190]since everyone has to work
- [00:03:24.300]together to help the show go on.
- [00:03:26.000]4-H has taught me some future
- [00:03:28.100]life skills such as self-responsibility
- [00:03:31.040]through learning how to care
- [00:03:32.130]for these animals.
- [00:03:33.000]I really like learning about
- [00:03:36.080]animals and also especially
- [00:03:38.590]losing helps me to prepare for
- [00:03:41.070]the future because with the
- [00:03:43.440]judges' comments I can figure
- [00:03:44.770]out what to do better in the
- [00:03:46.270]future.
- [00:03:47.000]4-H has helped me prepare for
- [00:03:49.240]my future by helping me get
- [00:03:50.000]better.
- [00:03:50.000]4-H has helped me prepare for
- [00:03:51.520]my future by helping me plan
- [00:03:52.880]ahead and organizing multiple
- [00:03:54.480]projects to do for the fair.
- [00:03:56.000]What I do as an application
- [00:03:57.930]analyst is I fix the computer
- [00:04:00.040]program when it's broken.
- [00:04:02.000]And not all of our 4-H projects
- [00:04:04.160]turn out exactly the way we
- [00:04:05.580]want the first time or the
- [00:04:07.110]second time or the third time.
- [00:04:09.000]So sometimes you have to
- [00:04:09.980]workshop it a little bit,
- [00:04:11.000]figure out what the problem is
- [00:04:12.440]first before you can work on
- [00:04:13.760]solving the problem.
- [00:04:15.000]And all of that has helped me
- [00:04:16.510]to be beyond ready for my real
- [00:04:18.250]life career.
