- [00:00:00.000]Hi, I'm Vicki Ferencz. I'm from
- [00:00:06.000]Ord, Nebraska. I'm a senior at
- [00:00:08.290]the University of Lincoln. I'm
- [00:00:09.840]studying
- [00:00:10.180]agriculture education with a
- [00:00:11.830]minor in entrepreneurship and
- [00:00:13.590]the reason I want to
- [00:00:14.580]return back to Ord is because
- [00:00:16.300]that's where I'm from, that's
- [00:00:18.160]my roots, and they're gonna
- [00:00:19.980]help me
- [00:00:20.320]live out my dream. Charlie Bortner.
- [00:00:22.460]I want to go back to rural
- [00:00:23.880]Nebraska because it's just it's
- [00:00:25.500]where I grew up, it's where I'm
- [00:00:26.900]from, it's where my family's at.
- [00:00:28.550]It's just a great community and
- [00:00:30.360]I
- [00:00:30.420]want to get back there and just
- [00:00:31.970]kind of like pay it forward. It's
- [00:00:33.810]where my heart is. I mean I
- [00:00:35.400]spent
- [00:00:35.820]a lot of my childhood traveling
- [00:00:37.230]through the Sandhills back home
- [00:00:38.700]for holidays and stuff. I
- [00:00:40.180]love the Sandhills so much. It's
- [00:00:42.490]just you don't find the love
- [00:00:44.280]like rural Nebraska anywhere
- [00:00:45.740]else
- [00:00:46.020]and I don't see myself ending
- [00:00:47.660]anywhere else but besides
- [00:00:49.060]Nebraska because of the love
- [00:00:50.630]and the
- [00:00:51.160]support I know I would have
- [00:00:52.220]anywhere I go. And I got to
- [00:00:53.350]experience like all sorts of
- [00:00:54.520]rural Nebraska
- [00:00:55.220]towns.
- [00:00:55.500]Through high school rodeo being
- [00:00:57.040]on the rodeo trail and every
- [00:00:58.210]the common theme I saw
- [00:00:59.340]throughout
- [00:00:59.700]every single town was the love
- [00:01:01.310]and support the community has
- [00:01:02.930]for each other and how much
- [00:01:04.320]they
- [00:01:04.500]want to grow and how much they
- [00:01:05.570]look to improve themselves each
- [00:01:06.800]and every day. How young
- [00:01:13.900]professionals can be definitely
- [00:01:15.580]successful in rural Nebraska is
- [00:01:17.200]looking at what they're
- [00:01:18.440]passionate about first of all
- [00:01:20.550]and seeing how can I transform
- [00:01:22.660]this not only for a big
- [00:01:24.190]corporation
- [00:01:25.220]but also for a small town. I'm
- [00:01:27.300]a agricultural engineer by
- [00:01:29.060]major and I picked that major
- [00:01:31.230]because
- [00:01:31.580]I see a disconnect between
- [00:01:32.930]farmers and ranchers and those
- [00:01:34.520]who are designing the equipment.
- [00:01:36.280]So I
- [00:01:36.680]decided that it'd be wise for
- [00:01:38.400]me to come to the university
- [00:01:40.050]get the tools I need to design
- [00:01:41.860]and
- [00:01:42.140]many design and test
- [00:01:43.210]agricultural equipment that way
- [00:01:44.980]farmers and ranchers can come
- [00:01:46.560]to me with ideas
- [00:01:47.660]improvements they want on their
- [00:01:49.220]equipment then I can design and
- [00:01:50.700]test those ideas and possibly
- [00:01:52.220]take
- [00:01:52.400]them to a ag manufacturer or
- [00:01:52.570]producer or something like that.
- [00:01:52.810]So I'm excited to be a part of
- [00:01:52.950]that.
- [00:01:53.220]I'm excited to be a part of
- [00:01:53.220]that.
- [00:01:53.260]I'm excited to be a part of
- [00:01:53.290]that.
- [00:01:53.360]I'm excited to be a part of
- [00:01:53.400]that.
- [00:01:53.480]I'm excited to be a part of
- [00:01:53.500]that.
- [00:01:53.560]I'm excited to be a part of
- [00:01:53.590]that.
- [00:01:53.660]I'm excited to be a part of
- [00:01:53.680]that.
- [00:01:53.740]I'm excited to be a part of
- [00:01:53.860]that.
- [00:01:53.980]Ag manufacturer or patent their
- [00:01:55.870]ideas or just trying to fill
- [00:01:57.580]that disconnect between the
- [00:01:58.850]farmer and the manufacturer.
- [00:01:59.940]I was I was attracted to the
- [00:02:07.080]program because it just seemed
- [00:02:09.140]like a unique experience.
- [00:02:11.100]It's not every day you get to
- [00:02:12.390]be enrolled in Nebraska for the
- [00:02:13.910]summer.
- [00:02:14.420]I think it's taught me a lot of
- [00:02:17.080]good soft skills like self-management,
- [00:02:20.260]starting things yourself, being
- [00:02:21.960]able to ask for help,
- [00:02:23.060]and communication.
- [00:02:24.120]And communicating with people,
- [00:02:25.820]those were skills I wasn't
- [00:02:27.300]really like good at until I was
- [00:02:28.940]enrolled in Nebraska where a
- [00:02:30.480]lot of my goals and a lot of my
- [00:02:32.020]tasks really relied on me
- [00:02:33.380]actually starting it and it
- [00:02:34.900]relied on me asking the
- [00:02:36.160]community members and the
- [00:02:37.630]people around me for help.
- [00:02:39.540]It might be scary by thinking
- [00:02:41.570]that you're going to be so far
- [00:02:43.590]from home, but you can find a
- [00:02:45.610]new home just for the summer.
- [00:02:47.900]There are people who are
- [00:02:49.430]willing to help you.
- [00:02:50.900]There are people who want to
- [00:02:51.960]hear your story and to care
- [00:02:52.960]about you.
- [00:02:53.520]If they know you're only there
- [00:02:55.450]for like eight weeks, they're
- [00:02:57.300]still, they think of you as
- [00:02:59.040]family.
- [00:02:59.580]The future is rural.
