The annual 2025 PARTT Field Day had a visiting guest from Tanzania, Teshal Mamo, a bean breeder working at the Alliance of Bioversity-CIAT in Arusha, Tanzania.

[00:00:39.170]can adapt, you know, high
[00:00:41.950]temperature and low soil
[00:00:44.500]fertility and drought.
[00:00:46.920]And really farmers are really,
[00:00:48.750]really excited to have.
[00:00:50.360]We have this variety and now
[00:00:52.570]the variety is being produced
[00:00:54.980]in Tanzania and we are
[00:00:56.710]expanding to Kenya.
[00:00:58.640]Mamo says Rwanda and Burundi
[00:01:00.650]bean consumption per person is
[00:01:02.860]120 to 140 pounds per year.
[00:01:06.060]He adds in East Africa, beans
[00:01:07.740]are a staple in their diet.
[00:01:09.440]And these days it is also a
[00:01:12.440]cash crop.
[00:01:14.060]Farmers producing not only for
[00:01:17.030]local consumption but also.
[00:01:20.360]For market and especially in
[00:01:23.870]Tanzania the government has a
[00:01:27.030]policy of school feeding.
[00:01:29.480]And more than 200 schools have
[00:01:34.730]been started eating beans
[00:01:38.540]during their lunch time.

[00:02:07.460]Commission donated the drought-tolerant
[00:02:09.280]dry beans, Kikatiti, and Mamo
[00:02:11.720]says they are becoming very
[00:02:13.290]popular.
[00:02:13.960]It has high drought and heat
[00:02:16.340]tolerant.
[00:02:17.400]And it's really, it has
[00:02:20.200]disease resistance especially
[00:02:22.960]common bacterial blight and it's
[00:02:25.800]short maturing and it's adapt
[00:02:30.860]in poor soil condition.
[00:02:32.720]And that's why farmers are
[00:02:34.390]really, really excited and they
[00:02:36.500]have started producing and they
[00:02:38.600]are really getting benefit.
