- [00:00:06.000]Hi my name is Alexa Carter.
- [00:00:07.240]I am currently a sophomore studying agricultural communication
- [00:00:11.120]and minoring in the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program.
- [00:00:14.440]I started as an ag education major and then ended up switching halfway
- [00:00:18.720]through my freshman year into the agricultural communication major
- [00:00:23.200]and then the Engler program.
- [00:00:24.640]I came into contact with it my halfway through my senior year of high school.
- [00:00:30.840]I was approached by one of the current students and she kind of said,
- [00:00:34.800]Hey, you're at this camp.
- [00:00:36.400]I love some of the ideas that you're coming up with.
- [00:00:39.360]Have you ever heard of the Engler program?
- [00:00:41.240]She ended up getting me connected with Tom (Fields) and I had a meeting within the next month.
- [00:00:44.800]I came up with this idea to combine chili and cinnamon rolls,
- [00:00:49.760]and then I got introduced to Tom and ended up
- [00:00:52.600]doing the Engler scholarship and kind of bouncing ideas off of people.
- [00:00:57.040]I took my entire freshman year within the program just to kind of ideate
- [00:01:01.080]figure out, okay, is this actually something that I want to do?
- [00:01:03.880]Do I actually really want to open a whole bakery
- [00:01:06.760]and just kind of with the idea of selling those chili filled cinnamon
- [00:01:10.000]rolls at the tailgates, How can I actually do something with that?
- [00:01:13.720]So I opened my bakery in August, and I've just been kind of rolling with it
- [00:01:18.280]ever since.
- [00:01:19.480]So a lot of what, like I've learned in Ag comm has been
- [00:01:23.360]a lot of taking pictures, videos of my business.
- [00:01:26.520]How do I write about my business, talk about it in interviews.
- [00:01:31.560]I've been on a couple different media sources, so I've done video,
- [00:01:36.640]I've done writing about articles I've interviewed for things about on the news.
- [00:01:41.080]So kind of trying to prepare me of knowing kind of the back end and then
- [00:01:46.480]the front end of those things.
- [00:01:47.920]And then I also have built my own website.
- [00:01:49.760]So that's really helped me.
- [00:01:51.200]Learning how to run my own social media platforms has been super helpful.
- [00:01:55.840]Learning through those kind of things
- [00:01:57.560]My favorite class so far has been the intro to digital media class
- [00:02:00.280]that ALEC has.
- [00:02:01.400]So just learning hands on experience.
- [00:02:03.640]So learning how to take pictures with the camera,
- [00:02:06.080]how to edit those pictures, how to take video
- [00:02:08.200]and at the sounds for them and just kind of the intro baseline
- [00:02:10.960]that really honestly kickstarted my business is right when I was opening.
- [00:02:14.200]So learning those like hands on skills really transitioned right into my business
- [00:02:18.240]and helped me grow my business.
- [00:02:19.840]Through Engler as well.
- [00:02:21.520]Yeah. So I really think they connect.
- [00:02:22.800]They go really hand-in-hand.
- [00:02:24.040]So I have to have a minor anyways, so having that minor be Engler
- [00:02:28.360]to be able to do my business really gives me that hands on experience
- [00:02:32.040]where I have full control over like how I'm communicating with my customers.
- [00:02:37.000]So kind of just
- [00:02:38.160]using that communication piece and then tying it back into my business.
- [00:02:42.120]Also kind of learning how to still target that market.
- [00:02:44.880]So I do target a lot of like rural audiences.
- [00:02:47.800]So kind of working with both audiences, I'm really able to connect
- [00:02:51.640]with a lot of people.
- [00:02:52.760]So I'd love to continue it through out the rest of the journey in college.
- [00:02:56.360]So I have about a year and a half left,
- [00:02:57.760]so being able to kind of do my business on the side has been great.
- [00:03:02.320]I would love to take it out of college as well,
- [00:03:05.280]but I'm still trying to focus on being able to do that communications degree.
- [00:03:08.760]So figuring out kind of if I want to do digital marketing.
- [00:03:12.160]I've been looking for internships that way.
- [00:03:14.680]So interning as a media specialist for agricultural businesses
- [00:03:18.480]outside of Lincoln, that's kind of the outlook that I'm looking.
- [00:03:21.160]So trying to figure out, you know, kind of the balance of both the business
- [00:03:24.680]and still be able to pursue that ag comm passion.
- [00:03:28.480]It's still trying
- [00:03:29.080]to teeter-totter between which one I want to do, but right now I'm still able to do both.
- [00:03:33.200]So yeah.
