Today we’re joined by Dr. Kate Brooks, the head of the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Kate has been a longtime faculty member and is now stepping into this leadership role, bringing years of experience in livestock marketing and ag policy.

[00:00:26.960]having us today yeah you know
[00:00:28.640]the department of ag economics
[00:00:30.490]um really when we think about
[00:00:32.240]ag economics we're looking at
[00:00:34.110]the intersection of agriculture
[00:00:36.210]business and data so we're
[00:00:37.920]looking at
[00:00:38.800]the economics and the
[00:00:40.190]foundations of our food system
[00:00:42.210]and how products move from
[00:00:43.920]before the
[00:00:44.320]producer all the way to the
[00:00:45.800]consumer so it's looking at
[00:00:47.350]everything from ag policy
[00:00:49.680]environmental natural resource
[00:00:51.380]commodity marketing ag finance
[00:00:54.030]ag policy ag trade
[00:00:56.640]all of that goes into the
[00:00:58.730]economics of our food system
[00:01:00.800]right and of course we follow
[00:01:02.720]that path
[00:01:03.280]here very closely and doing our
[00:01:05.440]market segments and really
[00:01:07.360]diving deep into what that
[00:01:09.180]means so
[00:01:10.160]it's good that these young
[00:01:11.480]people are getting that type of
[00:01:12.920]education so what opportunities
[00:01:14.640]are available for undergraduates
[00:01:16.790]who want to study the ag
[00:01:18.190]economics at unl yeah so we
[00:01:21.120]actually have
[00:01:21.840]two undergraduate majors we
[00:01:23.200]have an agricultural economics
[00:01:24.720]major and an agribusiness major
[00:01:26.320]both option or both majors have
[00:01:28.270]several different options
[00:01:29.980]everything from ag finance ag
[00:01:32.110]policy
[00:01:32.800]commodity marketing uh
[00:01:34.510]marketing of the food products
[00:01:36.920]themselves and so it gives
[00:01:38.640]students
[00:01:38.960]a lot of opportunities to
[00:01:40.420]create the path that they want
[00:01:41.830]to create for themselves along
[00:01:43.950]with
[00:01:44.560]internships we have a state-of-the-art
[00:01:46.940]commodity trading room we have
[00:01:48.760]great opportunities for the
[00:01:50.320]students to do experiential
[00:01:51.870]learning across nebraska so
[00:01:53.430]there's lots of opportunities
[00:01:55.120]for them
[00:01:56.000]and definitely and they're
[00:01:57.030]probably surprised to learn
[00:01:58.130]about all the opportunities for
[00:01:59.440]them
[00:01:59.760]as a career once they get that
[00:02:01.310]degree let's talk about any
[00:02:02.800]graduate studies you have yeah
[00:02:05.520]we have
[00:02:06.000]two graduate programs we have a
[00:02:07.680]master's of agricultural
[00:02:09.120]economics as well as a doctoral
[00:02:10.880]degree
[00:02:11.200]students work with our faculty
[00:02:13.620]to do applied research looking
[00:02:15.810]at various problems within
[00:02:18.160]agriculture that impact not
[00:02:20.190]only nebraska but the global
[00:02:22.220]economy as well and i'm
[00:02:24.130]assuming the
[00:02:24.720]students do not have to have an
[00:02:26.110]agriculture background to get
[00:02:27.570]involved no they don't we
[00:02:30.400]take students from all over the
[00:02:32.370]united states and beyond some
[00:02:34.290]are from rural nebraska others
[00:02:36.320]are
[00:02:36.800]from omaha and and other non-rural
[00:02:39.410]areas so you don't have to have
[00:02:41.770]an agricultural background
[00:02:43.520]right and let's talk about how
