- [00:00:00.000]Coming up on AI in the Classroom.
- [00:00:02.268]Ways AI can help you serve all students.
- [00:00:05.855](upbeat music)
- [00:00:11.161]Hi, my name is Guy Trainin.
- [00:00:12.595]I'm a professor at the
- [00:00:13.646]University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:00:15.515]and today I want to
- [00:00:16.549]talk about ways AI
- [00:00:18.368]can help you serve all students.
- [00:00:20.704]And I want to start
- [00:00:21.788]with one of my favorite things,
- [00:00:23.189]which is voice mode.
- [00:00:24.908]One of the things that the different
- [00:00:27.243]AI chatbots have almost all of them
- [00:00:29.946]is a voice mode,
- [00:00:31.047]which means you can talk to it
- [00:00:32.732]and it will talk back,
- [00:00:35.068]which
- [00:00:36.052]prevents
- [00:00:36.970]or helps with,
- [00:00:39.222]interactions
- [00:00:40.140]for students.
- [00:00:41.124]Who may not be able to type
- [00:00:42.876]for physical reasons
- [00:00:44.377]or because of visual reasons or,
- [00:00:48.298]just because they can't type yet.
- [00:00:49.916]And so what you can do
- [00:00:51.785]is you activate voice mode
- [00:00:54.537]and then you say, hi.
- [00:00:56.372]Hi.
- [00:00:56.773]I heard that loud and clear.
- [00:00:58.058]It's always good
- [00:00:58.725]to have a quick sound check.
- [00:01:00.343]Let me know if everything's
- [00:01:01.361]working fine on your end.
- [00:01:03.730]Yes it is.
- [00:01:04.664]Can you tell me,
- [00:01:06.366]some things about what
- [00:01:07.934]Pakistan is facing today?
- [00:01:09.919](computer audible beep)
- [00:01:11.871]Pakistan is dealing
- [00:01:13.189]with a mix of challenges.
- [00:01:14.724]And now, there's been a recent
- [00:01:16.760]security incident
- [00:01:17.777]in Balochistan
- [00:01:18.795]where gunmen attacked a passenger bus.
- [00:01:21.581]Um, on the political side,
- [00:01:23.266]Imran Khan's ex-wife
- [00:01:24.617]has launched a new political party,
- [00:01:26.319]which is pretty interesting.
- [00:01:27.704]And on the economic front,
- [00:01:29.139]the UK has lifted
- [00:01:30.457]a ban on Pakistani airlines,
- [00:01:32.358]which is a bit of good news
- [00:01:33.560]for their aviation industry.
- [00:01:35.228]Lots going on over there.
- [00:01:37.030]Can you tell me something
- [00:01:38.047]about the education in Pakistan
- [00:01:39.732]and can you do that
- [00:01:41.734]at the high school level, please?
- [00:01:43.987](computer audible beep)
- [00:01:46.189]In Pakistan,
- [00:01:47.307]high schools basically split
- [00:01:48.808]into two main phases,
- [00:01:51.111]grades nine and ten,
- [00:01:52.378]where students work
- [00:01:53.396]towards their matriculation exams.
- [00:01:55.465]And then grades 11 and 12,
- [00:01:57.450]where they prepare
- [00:01:58.251]for their intermediate exams.
- [00:02:00.136]They can choose different streams
- [00:02:01.521]like pre-medical,
- [00:02:02.722]pre-engineering,
- [00:02:03.790]humanities,
- [00:02:04.641]computer science
- [00:02:05.441]and commerce.
- [00:02:06.509]It's a pretty structured system
- [00:02:08.128]and each path kind of setting the stage
- [00:02:10.580]for what they might study in university.
- [00:02:12.799]Okay, so you can see how
- [00:02:14.317]voice mode works.
- [00:02:15.552]It speaks in a very casual voice.
- [00:02:18.071]It's very conversational,
- [00:02:19.372]which invites a response
- [00:02:21.291]and is not very mechanical
- [00:02:23.092]like the voices we used to have.
- [00:02:25.011]And what I love about it is unlike Siri,
- [00:02:27.347]who is not really my friend,
- [00:02:29.082]or a few other of the voice agents
- [00:02:31.935]that we had before,
- [00:02:33.319]this seems to be working rather smoothly
- [00:02:36.139]and will respond.
- [00:02:37.490]It has its thinking time,
- [00:02:39.108]but then responds very smoothly
- [00:02:41.294]in a conversational tone
- [00:02:42.762]that is easy to accept.
- [00:02:44.781]And to ask follow up questions.
- [00:02:46.783]And it doesn't ask you
- [00:02:47.784]did you say banana
- [00:02:49.102]when you actually talked about Pakistan.
- [00:02:51.137]And all kinds of things
- [00:02:52.105]that happened to me
- [00:02:52.872]on a regular basis with the old ones,
- [00:02:54.941]so this is one way to do it.
- [00:02:56.709]The second thing is we were recently,
- [00:02:58.461]for example,
- [00:02:59.212]asked to update
- [00:03:00.580]all of our instructional materials
- [00:03:02.415]to make sure that they conform
- [00:03:05.685]to all the needs that are defined by law
- [00:03:09.105]to support students
- [00:03:10.123]with disabilities,
- [00:03:11.140]including, for example, to create
- [00:03:13.793]alternative texts.
- [00:03:15.044]So alternative texts are texts
- [00:03:17.080]that are attached to graphics
- [00:03:19.065]that are included in presentations
- [00:03:20.833]or any kind of instructional materials.
- [00:03:22.936]And they help explain
- [00:03:24.587]what's in the picture
- [00:03:25.788]for somebody who's actually using
- [00:03:29.025]voice
- [00:03:29.959]to read the text
- [00:03:32.028]because they have a visual challenge,
- [00:03:34.664]they cannot see the graphic,
- [00:03:36.466]they cannot interpret it.
- [00:03:37.901]So now you have to create
- [00:03:39.469]alternative text.
- [00:03:40.303]Now I can sit and create
- [00:03:41.905]alternative text
- [00:03:42.789]for every graphic I have.
- [00:03:44.874]But if I'm fairly graphic heavy,
- [00:03:46.726]that task becomes quite onerous.
- [00:03:49.846]However, if you do have an AI,
- [00:03:52.849]you can quickly bring in a visual
- [00:03:57.203]and I'm going to bring a visual
- [00:03:59.389]from my, records right now.
- [00:04:02.125]I'm asking, can you provide alternative
- [00:04:05.828]text for this picture?
- [00:04:10.700]You can see
- [00:04:11.367]that the Alt text says:
- [00:04:12.585]a woman wearing glasses
- [00:04:14.120]and a winter coat
- [00:04:15.004]is sitting in a classroom
- [00:04:16.272]smiling at the camera
- [00:04:17.323]while holding a tablet.
- [00:04:18.558]This is very accurate.
- [00:04:20.727]This is a way to get that done
- [00:04:22.895]very fairly quickly.
- [00:04:24.397]You just copy that, paste it.
- [00:04:26.349]You of course check
- [00:04:27.350]for accuracy
- [00:04:28.201]because we do remember that
- [00:04:29.769]AI hallucinates
- [00:04:31.004]all the time,
- [00:04:31.988]adds details or tries
- [00:04:33.573]to complete the picture,
- [00:04:34.590]even if it's not there.
- [00:04:35.675]So you gotta read it for detail.
- [00:04:37.260]But this is an easy way
- [00:04:38.678]to create alt text
- [00:04:40.113]and reduce the load from,
- [00:04:43.433]from your need.
- [00:04:45.068]Or as some people have responded, start,
- [00:04:48.204]started reducing
- [00:04:49.022]the graphics that they use,
- [00:04:50.106]which is actually not good for students.
- [00:04:51.791]Student need these multimodal delivery,
- [00:04:55.662]we don't want to do away with it,
- [00:04:57.096]but we want to comply with the law,
- [00:04:58.598]but also to provide the service.
- [00:05:00.300]So everybody can learn.
- [00:05:01.567]And that's an easy way to use
- [00:05:03.553]an AI chatbot.
- [00:05:05.521]The third thing
- [00:05:06.839]that I want to talk about
- [00:05:07.924]is exactly the opposite.
- [00:05:09.192]And that is what that I can do,
- [00:05:11.477]is add pictures to our presentations,
- [00:05:14.881]to our instructional materials
- [00:05:16.416]that we create ourselves.
- [00:05:17.950]Sometimes we can just use,
- [00:05:21.120]pictures that are available,
- [00:05:22.739]and that's fine.
- [00:05:24.040]You don't have to recreate something
- [00:05:25.425]that you can easily get
- [00:05:26.642]from a Wikimedia, for example.
- [00:05:28.661]It exists.
- [00:05:29.312]It doesn't need to be created, recreated.
- [00:05:32.298]It doesn't need to spend that energy.
- [00:05:35.651]But if there's something you need
- [00:05:37.303]that you don't have available to you,
- [00:05:39.756]AI is very good at creating images
- [00:05:42.342]fairly quickly
- [00:05:43.509]and to very specific criteria,
- [00:05:46.112]and that way you can use that
- [00:05:48.815]in your own instructional materials
- [00:05:50.616]without worrying about copyright,
- [00:05:52.268]without worrying
- [00:05:53.069]about all the challenges that we have.
- [00:05:55.838]So that's a way to use AI.
- [00:05:58.057]And for example,
- [00:06:01.027]if I'm teaching English
- [00:06:02.145]and I'm thinking about the
- [00:06:03.363]act of kicking a ball.
- [00:06:04.997]Create picture of a child
- [00:06:08.885]kicking a red ball.
- [00:06:11.637]And so,
- [00:06:12.655]in this case, ChatGPT,
- [00:06:14.073]I like ChatGPT for picture production
- [00:06:16.325]that they've done quite a bit of work
- [00:06:18.544]and it seems to be doing a good job.
- [00:06:21.080]It does take a little bit of time.
- [00:06:23.282]We become impatient.
- [00:06:24.450]But again, if you can find this
- [00:06:26.636]anywhere else, please.
- [00:06:28.171]And without copyright
- [00:06:30.056]complications, please find it.
- [00:06:31.924]But if you can't,
- [00:06:33.276]you can use this very effectively,
- [00:06:35.361]and especially if you're
- [00:06:36.212]preparing a lesson
- [00:06:37.230]about specific vocabulary
- [00:06:39.031]that you will want to show
- [00:06:40.433]to create vocabulary cards
- [00:06:41.784]and things like that.
- [00:06:42.602]This may be a very usable option,
- [00:06:46.406]and we've shown it in, previous times.
- [00:06:49.692]All right.
- [00:06:50.309]So we created a picture.
- [00:06:52.261]And again you can make it realistic
- [00:06:53.880]or you can tell it to create it
- [00:06:55.298]in a different style
- [00:06:56.616]or in a cartoon style.
- [00:06:57.884]So this is a way to think about this.
- [00:07:00.103]Next, I'd like to talk about the last way
- [00:07:03.589]that we can make our classroom
- [00:07:05.658]more accessible to all students.
- [00:07:07.076]And that is translation.
- [00:07:09.045]One of the challenges that we have
- [00:07:11.214]is that sometimes our students,
- [00:07:13.249]often their families,
- [00:07:15.268]are not as proficient in English.
- [00:07:17.153]And one of the ways we can help alleviate
- [00:07:20.606]that problem is by translating materials
- [00:07:22.992]to their home language.
- [00:07:24.444]And with kids,
- [00:07:25.878]we want to make sure that they
- [00:07:28.131]retain their home language,
- [00:07:29.298]but also learn English.
- [00:07:30.716]But with parents,
- [00:07:31.701]we really have very little control.
- [00:07:33.252]They may be very busy,
- [00:07:34.220]they may be working very hard.
- [00:07:35.838]Their progress
- [00:07:36.589]in English is going to be slower.
- [00:07:38.157]So being able to deliver, for example,
- [00:07:42.178]their messages from the classroom
- [00:07:44.363]or
- [00:07:46.265]a weekly newsletter or whatever
- [00:07:48.534]it may be,
- [00:07:49.402]it will really be helpful
- [00:07:51.103]to serve it in different languages.
- [00:07:53.022]And AI can often do that.
- [00:07:55.074]Now.
- [00:07:55.992]The advantage is it can do that
- [00:07:59.395]at a good level.
- [00:08:01.097]It is not excellent.
- [00:08:02.365]So you always need
- [00:08:03.616]somebody who has knowledge
- [00:08:05.568]of that language to look it over
- [00:08:07.003]and make sure you didn't
- [00:08:07.854]make a significant mistake
- [00:08:09.672]or really not you
- [00:08:11.090]but the AI.
- [00:08:12.375]So you need somebody to look it over.
- [00:08:14.026]But there's a huge difference
- [00:08:15.378]between saying to somebody, for example,
- [00:08:17.396]who knows
- [00:08:18.464]Spanish, look it over
- [00:08:19.849]and see that it's okay,
- [00:08:21.801]versus take this
- [00:08:23.903]three page thing
- [00:08:25.254]and translate it to yourself, right.
- [00:08:27.623]These are two very different tasks
- [00:08:29.876]and they take very,
- [00:08:30.710]very different speeds.
- [00:08:31.911]So you can use the human resources
- [00:08:33.796]that you still need to use.
- [00:08:35.214]But it will take a fraction of the time
- [00:08:38.751]because you have access to AI.
- [00:08:41.904]So today on AI in the Classroom,
- [00:08:43.940]we talked about
- [00:08:44.774]a few ways that we can use
- [00:08:46.792]AI to make sure we serve all students.
- [00:08:49.212]And we talked about,
- [00:08:51.080]using voice mode
- [00:08:52.281]to overcome the difficulty of typing,
- [00:08:56.302]movement difficulties or even,
- [00:08:59.338]vision problems.
- [00:09:00.323]We talked about creating alt text
- [00:09:02.658]to make sure that all,
- [00:09:04.644]all people have access
- [00:09:05.811]to our graphic material.
- [00:09:07.396]We talked about creating pictures
- [00:09:09.081]to explain vocabulary,
- [00:09:10.249]especially for English learners
- [00:09:12.118]or any language learner really.
- [00:09:13.836]It doesn't matter where they are.
- [00:09:15.104]And finally help in translating materials
- [00:09:18.057]so they become more accessible
- [00:09:19.575]to people who are still
- [00:09:21.477]learning, English.
- [00:09:23.596]And I'll see you next time
- [00:09:24.680]on AI in the Classroom.
