- [00:02:14.050]right
- [00:02:14.700]yes that's correct all right
- [00:02:17.240]all right well we might get a
- [00:02:19.610]few more people that want to
- [00:02:21.600]join us
- [00:02:21.940]here as we get going typically
- [00:02:23.610]we get one or two more people
- [00:02:25.040]that uh remember about it and
- [00:02:26.660]go oh
- [00:02:27.020]yeah i needed to be in on that
- [00:02:28.740]so um let's go ahead i'm gonna
- [00:02:30.550]have um terry maybe do an
- [00:02:32.160]introduction
- [00:02:32.540]here and how she got to know
- [00:02:34.430]gracie and everything uh terry
- [00:02:36.670]if you'd kind of give us a
- [00:02:38.500]little
- [00:02:38.860]precursor here well i would
- [00:02:42.170]like to introduce madison grace
- [00:02:46.630]brown um she uh okay i came to
- [00:02:49.460]know madison through my
- [00:02:50.730]daughter danielle
- [00:02:51.940]madison is danielle's niece um
- [00:02:54.690]she began as a young
- [00:02:56.380]entrepreneur what about five
- [00:02:59.030]years ago
- [00:02:59.660]madison it's probably three and
- [00:03:01.880]a half years ago because i
- [00:03:03.620]started when i was 10 almost 11
- [00:03:06.420]and now
- [00:03:06.780]i'm 14 good okay so she lives
- [00:03:09.700]in moral nebraska um she has
- [00:03:12.130]been invited and she
- [00:03:14.100]was able to attend the nebraska
- [00:03:17.360]state fair with her candles
- [00:03:20.200]last year
- [00:03:21.940]um and so i thought of anybody
- [00:03:23.750]that we should listen to uh she's
- [00:03:25.970]she speaks very well um she
- [00:03:28.940]attends many um home shows
- [00:03:31.250]trade shows that she goes to so
- [00:03:33.310]i would like to just hear more
- [00:03:35.460]about
- [00:03:35.760]her how she started why she
- [00:03:37.300]started and then let you guys
- [00:03:38.980]pick her brains because i think
- [00:03:40.900]she's
- [00:03:41.140]very intelligent and speaks
- [00:03:42.690]very well so madison i'm going
- [00:03:44.280]to turn it over to you okay
- [00:03:46.150]thanks for
- [00:03:46.680]joining us thank you for having
- [00:03:49.020]me well i probably started my
- [00:03:51.180]business when i was about
- [00:03:53.120]10 almost 11 like i already
- [00:03:57.240]said i sell my candles at my
- [00:03:59.620]shows and i have a local deal
- [00:04:03.060]and it's two
- [00:04:03.800]for 20 and there are so many
- [00:04:08.120]things to running a business
- [00:04:10.840]there's you have to be
- [00:04:13.460]interactive with
- [00:04:14.660]your customers you have to be
- [00:04:16.680]motivated and you have to just
- [00:04:19.600]put your money back into your
- [00:04:23.070]business to um keep it growing
- [00:04:25.850]i had to do that for about
- [00:04:27.590]three years
- [00:04:27.980]before i could buy myself
- [00:04:29.530]something i had to put it back
- [00:04:31.270]into my business and when i put
- [00:04:34.980]it back
- [00:04:35.540]into my business i got my wax
- [00:04:37.180]melter from that i got my
- [00:04:38.600]candle room from that and i
- [00:04:40.180]even could
- [00:04:40.920]buy my products again
- [00:04:46.680]madison can you tell us why you
- [00:04:52.570]began your your candle making
- [00:04:54.620]business or how it came to be
- [00:04:56.580]well i just kind of felt like
- [00:04:58.790]starting a business so i want
- [00:05:00.910]to talk to my mom and dad
- [00:05:02.700]and i didn't know what i wanted
- [00:05:04.760]my business to be then but i
- [00:05:06.650]have a friend in omaha well i
- [00:05:09.240]should
- [00:05:09.360]say it's my mom's friend and
- [00:05:11.660]she makes candles so we
- [00:05:13.560]contacted her and said what do
- [00:05:16.280]you think
- [00:05:16.660]is this a good thing for me to
- [00:05:18.570]do she said oh yeah candles are
- [00:05:20.660]an easy thing to make you just
- [00:05:23.300]have to research what kind of
- [00:05:24.680]wax you should use and i chose
- [00:05:26.050]soy wax because it burns
- [00:05:27.200]cleaner
- [00:05:27.760]stronger and i mean it burns
- [00:05:29.480]cleaner it has a stronger scent
- [00:05:31.630]and it burns longer than other
- [00:05:33.400]waxes so gracie who did you go
- [00:05:36.800]through to or to get started i
- [00:05:39.140]mean uh you you said you
- [00:05:41.500]mentioned
- [00:05:41.760]your parents in there but was
- [00:05:43.310]there some other like a mentor
- [00:05:44.920]somewhere that um
- [00:05:46.640]elaborate a little bit i guess
- [00:05:48.040]if you would on on how somebody
- [00:05:49.440]helped
- [00:05:49.860]get your frame of mind going
- [00:05:52.140]toward this way
- [00:05:53.260]well i've just always enjoyed
- [00:05:57.330]making things and saving my
- [00:06:00.620]money so i'd probably say my
- [00:06:04.340]parents
- [00:06:04.820]helped me a lot on that and i'd
- [00:06:06.330]say my grandpa would help me a
- [00:06:07.860]lot on that too because he was
- [00:06:09.500]a banker and he kind of taught
- [00:06:11.220]me how to save my money and use
- [00:06:12.950]it wisely and my mom's friend
- [00:06:14.780]she
- [00:06:15.220]helped me with
- [00:06:16.620]getting how to know me how to
- [00:06:19.530]know how to make candles and my
- [00:06:24.730]parents gave me the startup
- [00:06:26.300]money
- [00:06:26.540]so they were a big part in it
- [00:06:28.800]so what's the key to making a
- [00:06:31.310]good candle you said you
- [00:06:33.110]mentioned
- [00:06:34.080]the soy wax and stuff but a lot
- [00:06:35.760]of people try to make candles
- [00:06:37.440]out of this or that and
- [00:06:38.800]and what's what's your process
- [00:06:40.990]of from start to finish well i
- [00:06:44.710]get my
- [00:06:46.600]soy wax and i use fragrance
- [00:06:48.930]oils on most of my candles and
- [00:06:51.790]some are combined with
- [00:06:53.470]essential oils
- [00:06:54.920]and i guess most of it depends
- [00:06:57.490]on just the temperature that's
- [00:07:01.100]a big key part in making
- [00:07:03.220]candles because if the
- [00:07:04.830]temperature is too cold they
- [00:07:07.220]frost as this is as in frosting
- [00:07:09.100]they
- [00:07:09.980]disconnect from the jar but
- [00:07:13.230]they still burn fine
- [00:07:16.580]it just doesn't look as
- [00:07:17.650]appealing
- [00:07:18.220]gracie where do you sell your
- [00:07:23.260]candles at do we have any local
- [00:07:26.320]vendors that these people might
- [00:07:28.280]be familiar with in their areas
- [00:07:30.220]or if you can share that or
- [00:07:31.780]where would they buy them if
- [00:07:33.490]they
- [00:07:33.840]were to go to a local store i
- [00:07:36.920]sell them in co-op in scott's
- [00:07:39.660]bluff and you save immoral and
- [00:07:43.720]i also
- [00:07:44.800]sell them in scott's bluff and
- [00:07:45.410]i also sell them in scott's
- [00:07:45.950]bluff and i also sell them in
- [00:07:46.560]scott's bluff
- [00:07:46.560]at grow nebraska but i also
- [00:07:51.510]have them online
- [00:07:54.060]do you use etsy gracie excuse
- [00:07:57.740]me i didn't hear that or madison
- [00:08:01.290]excuse me do you use etsy
- [00:08:04.160]as a way to sell them since you
- [00:08:06.800]they're homemade no i haven't
- [00:08:09.940]ever thought of using etsy
- [00:08:16.560]tell us about how you came to
- [00:08:19.200]be uh how you got into having
- [00:08:21.830]an llc what drove that decision
- [00:08:24.700]well if you don't have an llc
- [00:08:27.050]with a business and somebody
- [00:08:29.530]let's say sues you like let's
- [00:08:31.440]say i forgot
- [00:08:31.940]a tag a warning tag at the
- [00:08:33.850]bottom like saying don't put by
- [00:08:36.510]curtains and stuff and let's
- [00:08:38.680]say
- [00:08:39.020]somebody did that and they
- [00:08:40.510]tried to sue me on it and they
- [00:08:42.040]got the sue they wouldn't be
- [00:08:43.580]able to go
- [00:08:44.260]after i'm a minor so they don't
- [00:08:46.530]they wouldn't be able to sue me
- [00:08:46.540]on it and they wouldn't be able
- [00:08:46.540]to
- [00:08:46.540]they can't go after my stuff
- [00:08:48.070]they would have to go after my
- [00:08:49.360]parents stuff and they could
- [00:08:51.270]take our
- [00:08:51.960]house our car and we didn't
- [00:08:53.880]want that happening so if we
- [00:08:55.680]wanted them to sue me we wanted
- [00:08:57.740]them to
- [00:08:58.380]be able to only go after my
- [00:08:59.880]business and not our personal
- [00:09:01.760]stuff you mentioned that you
- [00:09:06.130]had
- [00:09:06.780]your grandfather that was a
- [00:09:08.490]banker um did you have an
- [00:09:09.980]attorney that kind of helped
- [00:09:11.620]advise you in some of these as
- [00:09:13.060]well along the way i
- [00:09:16.520]had my tax guy he kind of
- [00:09:18.340]helped me um understand how to
- [00:09:20.960]do taxes but other than that
- [00:09:23.590]not really
- [00:09:24.480]i find it fascinating that a 14
- [00:09:28.020]year old has a tax guy i mean
- [00:09:31.160]that's pretty phenomenal in it
- [00:09:33.800]in itself there so um so you
- [00:09:35.880]started when you were between
- [00:09:38.240]10 and 11 um we've talked a lot
- [00:09:42.500]about
- [00:09:42.780]what's the appropriate age to
- [00:09:44.100]approach and what's the
- [00:09:45.160]appropriate age to approach and
- [00:09:46.500]what's the
- [00:09:46.500]youth about getting started in
- [00:09:48.060]their own business and
- [00:09:49.200]sometimes we think that you
- [00:09:50.810]know they need to
- [00:09:51.380]be a junior or a senior in high
- [00:09:53.080]school or something like that
- [00:09:54.800]but um do you think that
- [00:09:56.260]like middle school age is an
- [00:09:58.210]appropriate to start talking to
- [00:10:00.380]kids about getting into their
- [00:10:02.220]own
- [00:10:02.360]business i'd say it is but it's
- [00:10:04.910]more difficult for them my
- [00:10:07.170]parents had to help me in the
- [00:10:09.680]beginning
- [00:10:09.920]like they had to kind of help
- [00:10:12.140]me understand what certain
- [00:10:14.410]things meant and
- [00:10:16.480]it was harder for me to
- [00:10:17.860]understand it but yes i would
- [00:10:19.730]say it is a good age to start
- [00:10:21.850]if
- [00:10:22.080]they are willing to do it to
- [00:10:24.890]pick your brain a little bit
- [00:10:27.030]about from your age bracket um
- [00:10:30.260]are kids in in your age bracket
- [00:10:32.130]from 10 to 14 now are they
- [00:10:34.220]starting to think about what
- [00:10:36.010]they want to
- [00:10:36.720]do uh when they grow up in a
- [00:10:37.980]serious manner whether they
- [00:10:39.450]want to have their own business
- [00:10:41.140]or they want to be a doctor or
- [00:10:42.630]something are you guys getting
- [00:10:44.160]that through the middle school
- [00:10:45.880]age
- [00:10:46.460]bracket and stuff i am not
- [00:10:49.250]completely sure on that i don't
- [00:10:51.790]go to school so i don't talk to
- [00:10:55.020]many
- [00:10:55.240]kids my age unless i am at my
- [00:10:57.360]youth group or stuff like that
- [00:10:59.430]but yeah i'd say they are
- [00:11:03.510]thinking about
- [00:11:04.060]it i wouldn't say like 10 and
- [00:11:06.330]11 as much but i'd say 12 to 14
- [00:11:09.200]more okay i just had a question
- [00:11:14.170]for
- [00:11:14.940]you i'm can't say i'm clueless
- [00:11:15.590]but i'm going to ask you a
- [00:11:16.100]question i'm going to ask you a
- [00:11:16.440]question
- [00:11:16.440]close to your age i'm still
- [00:11:17.980]like 10 years older but um i
- [00:11:19.800]guess um i grew up like in a
- [00:11:21.330]family that
- [00:11:22.200]had a family business so i don't
- [00:11:23.810]know like if do you have like
- [00:11:25.240]any relatives or like does your
- [00:11:26.860]family have any like uh small
- [00:11:29.150]businesses that they ran that
- [00:11:31.400]you ever maybe got inspired
- [00:11:33.530]from
- [00:11:33.960]well my dad he helped my
- [00:11:36.540]grandpa they both built
- [00:11:39.250]together it's kind of been a
- [00:11:42.360]little
- [00:11:42.640]tradition that we've had for
- [00:11:44.240]the guys in our family and now
- [00:11:45.490]my dad's starting to
- [00:11:46.420]pass it on to my brother and
- [00:11:47.970]they are starting it's kind of
- [00:11:49.720]it's a smaller business but
- [00:11:51.860]they
- [00:11:51.860]kind of like each develop their
- [00:11:53.730]own business and then the one
- [00:11:55.380]grows away and they just keep
- [00:11:57.140]passing it on to each son and
- [00:11:58.420]teaching them how to build but
- [00:11:59.920]other than that not really
- [00:12:01.140]how did you get involved with
- [00:12:06.050]grow nebraska
- [00:12:08.180]it was from the state fair
- [00:12:10.460]somebody meant actually two
- [00:12:12.720]people mentioned it to me and
- [00:12:16.400]i contacted them and they set
- [00:12:18.810]up a zoom meeting for me and i
- [00:12:21.420]talked to them about my
- [00:12:23.060]business
- [00:12:23.920]and we discussed what would be
- [00:12:26.100]best for me and we did decide
- [00:12:28.240]to go with um that so i could
- [00:12:31.380]kind of
- [00:12:31.760]get my business the word spread
- [00:12:34.470]onto the other side of the
- [00:12:36.210]state
- [00:12:36.760]what is your favorite scent of
- [00:12:40.510]candle that you've made so far
- [00:12:46.380]well i'd say it's pumpkin souffle
- [00:12:48.030]but you never know sometimes it
- [00:12:49.580]changes because i get new scents
- [00:12:51.060]often
- [00:12:51.680]about how many candles do you
- [00:12:57.130]make a month do you have a do
- [00:13:00.690]you keep track of that to see
- [00:13:03.140]if you're growing your business
- [00:13:04.680]how do you know if you're doing
- [00:13:06.100]well
- [00:13:06.400]um i haven't been able to make
- [00:13:09.280]many candles lately because
- [00:13:12.200]there's been a shortage on jars
- [00:13:16.360]and that has really been hard
- [00:13:18.170]on my business and i'm still
- [00:13:20.970]trying to figure out what to do
- [00:13:23.500]about that
- [00:13:24.000]but i don't usually keep track
- [00:13:26.490]on how many i make a month i
- [00:13:28.710]usually just make them
- [00:13:29.840]depending if
- [00:13:30.880]anybody needs them or before
- [00:13:33.350]shows
- [00:13:33.900]so i see you make melts so is
- [00:13:38.400]covid affected you making those
- [00:13:40.360]i wouldn't say nearly as much
- [00:13:44.360]because of
- [00:13:46.340]the jar shortage and not the
- [00:13:48.570]case shortage on those but
- [00:13:50.920]it has affected it a little by
- [00:13:52.600]not having many shows because i
- [00:13:54.460]haven't been able to go to many
- [00:13:56.220]so madison you're you're online
- [00:13:59.620]do you know what your
- [00:14:01.590]percentage of
- [00:14:03.120]online sales versus your show
- [00:14:05.680]sales is i mean does it go well
- [00:14:07.530]online
- [00:14:08.160]i don't have a percentage for
- [00:14:10.800]you but i would say that my
- [00:14:12.940]show sales are a lot
- [00:14:14.740]better than
- [00:14:16.320]my online sales just because i
- [00:14:19.240]can interact with my customers
- [00:14:20.800]and it helps to be young
- [00:14:25.420]and they like seeing young
- [00:14:29.270]entrepreneurs a lot of the time
- [00:14:30.980]and walk up to my booth more
- [00:14:32.500]i guess i have a question kind
- [00:14:34.820]of relating back before that
- [00:14:37.170]one was asked but um like the
- [00:14:39.420]jar
- [00:14:39.720]shortage have you ever done it
- [00:14:41.400]where like if they bring back
- [00:14:43.030]like their jars that they've
- [00:14:44.740]previously had like if you were
- [00:14:45.940]to maybe
- [00:14:46.300]like do some sort of like maybe
- [00:14:48.640]discount or maybe just you know
- [00:14:50.440]say like if you guys ever have
- [00:14:51.750]jars
- [00:14:52.020]like bring them back because i
- [00:14:53.340]know i mean if you go into like
- [00:14:54.620]the canning world everyone's
- [00:14:56.040]always
- [00:14:56.180]looking for you know jars and
- [00:14:57.410]they can be used a thousand
- [00:14:58.550]times so i don't know if maybe
- [00:14:59.780]that was
- [00:15:00.240]ever an idea to maybe offer
- [00:15:01.700]something if they brought their
- [00:15:03.500]jars back or even sent them
- [00:15:04.980]back
- [00:15:05.320]i can't do that because if i
- [00:15:07.340]was to do that with jars that
- [00:15:09.490]have already been used
- [00:15:11.300]it the candles aren't don't
- [00:15:13.860]make get made bright they
- [00:15:16.280]separate from the jar they don't
- [00:15:17.980]melt right they it just it's
- [00:15:20.260]not good for the candle at all
- [00:15:23.840]madison can you talk about your
- [00:15:35.240]um
- [00:15:36.160]i want i want you to talk a
- [00:15:38.640]little bit about your your
- [00:15:41.840]cousin and how you were raised
- [00:15:45.240]monies
- [00:15:46.260]uh for the cancer association
- [00:15:48.680]for his
- [00:15:49.280]he was it hemoblastomia
- [00:15:53.740]can you talk a little bit about
- [00:15:56.480]that and what you've done with
- [00:15:58.950]that
- [00:15:59.440]yes a few years ago my cousin kade
- [00:16:03.220]he had cancer which was hepatoblastoma
- [00:16:07.000]and that's a liver cancer
- [00:16:08.620]and addy's hepatoblastoma
- [00:16:10.820]raises money to try to well let
- [00:16:13.230]me start from the beginning on
- [00:16:15.640]how that
- [00:16:16.240]got started there was um a
- [00:16:18.390]little girl named at at abby's
- [00:16:21.500]abby and she died from hepatoblastoma
- [00:16:25.360]and
- [00:16:26.140]her parents now have a
- [00:16:27.940]corporation where they try to
- [00:16:30.440]develop a cure for liver cancer
- [00:16:33.100]and i wanted to
- [00:16:34.760]donate to that because it costs
- [00:16:37.070]a lot because they have to get
- [00:16:39.130]like i think it was some sort
- [00:16:41.140]of bird
- [00:16:41.540]eggs and develop and experiment
- [00:16:45.130]on them to get them to get them
- [00:16:46.220]to get them to get them to get
- [00:16:46.220]them to give them cancer and
- [00:16:47.160]then cure them from it i tried
- [00:16:50.010]to raise a little money and i
- [00:16:52.600]got around
- [00:16:53.960]one thousand something and i
- [00:16:57.870]donated a dollar from each
- [00:17:01.440]candle and 25 cents from i mean
- [00:17:04.950]50 cents from
- [00:17:05.780]each melt so she gives back as
- [00:17:11.280]well what else can you share
- [00:17:15.060]about your
- [00:17:16.200]business what do you like doing
- [00:17:18.810]the most i would probably say
- [00:17:21.290]my favorite thing about running
- [00:17:23.600]my
- [00:17:23.700]business is just the vendor
- [00:17:26.640]shows seeing people's faces
- [00:17:29.950]when they get the candles
- [00:17:32.240]and smell them for the first
- [00:17:35.190]time it's it's funny
- [00:17:37.360]when you were able to go to
- [00:17:39.990]vendor shows how many were you
- [00:17:43.140]doing per year do you know
- [00:17:46.200]i'd say four to five when i
- [00:17:48.720]first started i did a little
- [00:17:51.040]bit more because i went to this
- [00:17:53.820]one per week because i had a
- [00:17:55.680]thing called the farmer's
- [00:17:57.340]market and now that my business
- [00:18:01.100]has
- [00:18:01.320]grown i decided no longer to do
- [00:18:02.990]the farmer's market and just do
- [00:18:04.740]bigger events like oregon
- [00:18:06.320]trail days and i used to do
- [00:18:09.060]rendezvous days but now i don't
- [00:18:12.450]and i do the state fair still
- [00:18:16.200]and i didn't get to do that
- [00:18:17.600]this year unfortunately though
- [00:18:19.320]because of covid
- [00:18:20.320]but i'd say about five yeah
- [00:18:24.900]can you tell us how you
- [00:18:27.160]marketed how did you determine
- [00:18:29.680]your sense
- [00:18:30.720]you know how did you pick how
- [00:18:32.600]many since you should start
- [00:18:34.340]with and how did you do that
- [00:18:37.540]well instead of getting the 16
- [00:18:40.300]ounce bottles of the oils i got
- [00:18:42.670]the one ounce bottles and i got
- [00:18:45.120]30
- [00:18:45.320]of those for my first one and i
- [00:18:46.180]got 30 of those for my second
- [00:18:46.180]one and i got 30 of those for
- [00:18:46.180]my
- [00:18:46.180]first one i made the candles
- [00:18:48.930]and you can only make one
- [00:18:50.100]candle if you have one ounce
- [00:18:51.670]bottles
- [00:18:52.120]so i made one candle of each
- [00:18:54.670]scent that i had i let family
- [00:18:57.350]smell them and marked what i
- [00:19:00.890]should
- [00:19:01.440]what was the highest ranking
- [00:19:04.420]and i kept those 15 i think it
- [00:19:07.200]was
- [00:19:07.600]do you have pictures or
- [00:19:12.490]anything you can show
- [00:19:16.160]about your candle making room
- [00:19:18.480]that your dad built for you i
- [00:19:20.100]don't have them on me but
- [00:19:22.860]well at the moment they're
- [00:19:24.870]usually on my mom's phone it's
- [00:19:27.140]not is it on your website
- [00:19:29.060]not the candle room no the
- [00:19:31.000]candle room i have a video of
- [00:19:33.040]it on facebook on my facebook
- [00:19:35.340]page
- [00:19:35.880]okay so they could go out and
- [00:19:37.880]see it on facebook yes madison's
- [00:19:40.670]dad built her her
- [00:19:42.060]own candle making room within
- [00:19:43.720]his garage correct yes
- [00:19:46.140]he had this little section of
- [00:19:48.100]his garage that we just stored
- [00:19:50.210]our christmas stuff in and he
- [00:19:51.880]said
- [00:19:52.200]that he needed to build onto
- [00:19:54.050]his garage and i needed a
- [00:19:55.670]candle room so instead of just
- [00:19:59.440]building
- [00:20:00.320]another part of the garage he
- [00:20:02.050]separated the top from that
- [00:20:03.720]room and he built a little deck
- [00:20:05.600]and he put all his stuff up
- [00:20:07.290]there and i got all the
- [00:20:08.740]supplies that was well i had to
- [00:20:12.100]buy all my
- [00:20:12.920]own supplies for it and my dad
- [00:20:14.590]said he would do the labor for
- [00:20:16.120]me and i had to buy all my own
- [00:20:16.120]but i had to get the wood the
- [00:20:18.920]flooring the counter the oven
- [00:20:22.110]the wax melter and we just
- [00:20:25.320]used that one room off to the
- [00:20:27.940]side and built my candle room
- [00:20:30.490]yeah
- [00:20:31.000]so outside of covid and the
- [00:20:35.060]pandemic madison um what what
- [00:20:38.320]do you think your biggest
- [00:20:40.840]challenges
- [00:20:41.360]have been in getting your
- [00:20:43.350]business to the point it is
- [00:20:44.780]right now i'd say
- [00:20:46.100]the biggest challenges on
- [00:20:47.530]getting my business to where it
- [00:20:49.240]is now is my age the age on
- [00:20:55.600]young
- [00:20:56.220]entrepreneurs is a lot of it
- [00:20:58.740]because with my llc it was a
- [00:21:00.830]lot harder for me to get it
- [00:21:03.120]and opening my own business
- [00:21:04.960]account i couldn't have my own
- [00:21:06.960]business account without an llc
- [00:21:09.160]and they didn't know what to do
- [00:21:10.710]because i was under 18 because
- [00:21:12.600]under 18 aren't allowed to have
- [00:21:14.440]their own business accounts and
- [00:21:15.720]i didn't know what to do
- [00:21:15.860]because i was under 18 because
- [00:21:16.080]but since i had an llc they had
- [00:21:17.530]to give it to me
- [00:21:18.320]so you're breaking new ground
- [00:21:22.090]for the banking industry as
- [00:21:25.560]well apparently yes hey jenny
- [00:21:31.040]i have the video up of her
- [00:21:34.110]candle room do you want to
- [00:21:37.070]share screen go ahead
- [00:21:40.880]let me
- [00:21:46.080]wait wait wait wait wait wait
- [00:21:48.460]stop
- [00:21:48.640]we have had a couple other
- [00:21:52.810]people join us which is awesome
- [00:21:58.040]okay can you see it's coming
- [00:22:01.670]there it is
- [00:22:02.400]no sound no sound go to your
- [00:22:11.290]advanced settings when you
- [00:22:13.320]share and share sound
- [00:22:16.080]advanced settings when you in
- [00:22:20.540]the sharing when you start to
- [00:22:22.510]share so unshare and then start
- [00:22:24.120]again
- [00:22:24.460]at the top there are some tabs
- [00:22:26.690]for you to choose from
- [00:22:28.440]unshare unshare stop share
- [00:22:36.040]okay and then advanced got it
- [00:22:46.080]computer sound only
- [00:22:49.100]that one probably i'm not sure
- [00:22:54.380]see madison we're all
- [00:22:56.790]technically challenged
- [00:22:58.790]sometimes too
- [00:22:59.980]yeah
- [00:23:13.080]stinker
- [00:23:16.080]still not hearing that i don't
- [00:23:20.660]know why can you hear it chelsea
- [00:23:22.120]i can hear it you guys can't
- [00:23:25.160]though
- [00:23:25.500]no bummer all right well i
- [00:23:28.570]tried maybe madison can lead us
- [00:23:31.220]through this as it's showing
- [00:23:33.000]she could tell you what she's
- [00:23:34.920]showing you yeah i could do
- [00:23:37.440]that okay great so what i was
- [00:23:40.690]showing
- [00:23:41.580]in the first part of the video
- [00:23:43.020]was my wax melter and there was
- [00:23:44.520]my oven and i was like oh my
- [00:23:45.770]god i'm
- [00:23:46.060]in the first part of the video
- [00:23:46.170]was my wax melter and there was
- [00:23:46.250]my oven and i was like oh my
- [00:23:46.340]god i'm
- [00:23:46.480]and then above my oven was the
- [00:23:48.760]sense that i use and my
- [00:23:50.560]accomplishments and as i kept
- [00:23:53.590]walking to
- [00:23:54.340]the little racks that's where i
- [00:23:56.680]cool my candles and melt the
- [00:23:58.920]tops so they're even
- [00:24:00.320]and that is my like thermometer
- [00:24:03.310]i should say i mean uh yeah
- [00:24:07.350]thermometer and it helps me
- [00:24:10.220]figure out what temperature the
- [00:24:12.320]room is and what i'm showing
- [00:24:14.100]you right now is my overstock
- [00:24:16.040]and that's just basically my
- [00:24:19.050]process and the room
- [00:24:21.020]perfect thank you
- [00:24:26.600]so madison how many pounds of
- [00:24:30.300]wax do you normally melt at a
- [00:24:33.860]time
- [00:24:34.560]when you're in the production
- [00:24:36.390]process and stuff do you
- [00:24:37.860]kind of have different amounts
- [00:24:39.820]that you use for different
- [00:24:41.460]things or how do you determine
- [00:24:43.320]that
- [00:24:43.700]well i have
- [00:24:46.020]one pound for each candle and i
- [00:24:49.310]can i'm trying to think how
- [00:24:51.760]much in my wax melt right now
- [00:24:53.520]i used to only be able to make
- [00:24:55.820]30 candles a day because i was
- [00:24:58.620]just using double boilers
- [00:25:00.900]but now i can make almost 150
- [00:25:04.270]candles so in a day so i can
- [00:25:06.830]melt 50 pounds of wax
- [00:25:09.320]each time i melt it and it
- [00:25:10.960]takes about two hours for each
- [00:25:13.020]to melt
- [00:25:16.000]for your wax? It's soy wax.
- [00:25:19.980]That's, I think, yeah, that's
- [00:25:25.060]it. Can't think of any. Where
- [00:25:29.600]do
- [00:25:29.700]you order it from? Do you have
- [00:25:31.930]an online resource for you,
- [00:25:34.000]Madison? Okay, sorry about that.
- [00:25:36.870]Candle
- [00:25:37.460]science. And what's your profit
- [00:25:42.010]margin on, I don't know, per
- [00:25:46.290]candle? Do you know that?
- [00:25:49.960]Not at the moment, no. That's
- [00:25:52.790]proprietary information, Jenny.
- [00:25:56.280]I know. Do you actually have
- [00:25:58.960]products then in the grow
- [00:26:01.210]Nebraska stores?
- [00:26:03.060]Yes, not as much as
- [00:26:07.460]I want to be, but I'm hoping to
- [00:26:10.100]get some more there so I can
- [00:26:12.670]even spread the word more. My
- [00:26:15.740]sales there aren't as good as I
- [00:26:18.000]would say they are online and
- [00:26:20.150]locally and at shows,
- [00:26:21.920]but I'm doing that mainly for
- [00:26:24.020]the publicity there. It has
- [00:26:26.210]helped me
- [00:26:27.020]get the word out, and I have
- [00:26:29.150]gotten a lot more orders from
- [00:26:31.050]that side of the state now.
- [00:26:33.200]I know that grow Nebraska also
- [00:26:35.890]does a lot of education.
- [00:26:37.460]So I'm hoping to get some more
- [00:26:38.100]of that there. I'm hoping to
- [00:26:39.860]get more of that there. I've
- [00:26:40.650]been
- [00:26:42.980]really busy with my school and
- [00:26:45.020]my brother just finished
- [00:26:46.770]football season, and my mom has
- [00:26:50.080]her job
- [00:26:50.600]now, and my dad has his job. So
- [00:26:52.910]it has been difficult trying to,
- [00:26:55.140]but in the future, I'm
- [00:26:56.820]hoping to get into more of them.
- [00:26:58.150]So the last question I was
- [00:27:01.830]thinking about is in working
- [00:27:03.560]with people either in
- [00:27:04.600]developing their product
- [00:27:05.880]description or content, what
- [00:27:07.090]are some of the
- [00:27:07.440]things that they can do to get
- [00:27:08.300]that content for their websites?
- [00:27:09.440]It's sometimes really hard to
- [00:27:10.520]get that content out of them,
- [00:27:12.250]but you are still the only
- [00:27:13.710]person that really knows your
- [00:27:15.430]product
- [00:27:15.980]well. How hard was that for you,
- [00:27:18.090]or what process did you use to
- [00:27:19.840]be able to put the tags
- [00:27:22.010]together
- [00:27:22.720]for your products and then to
- [00:27:24.140]create the text for your
- [00:27:25.250]website? I first met up with
- [00:27:31.070]Christian.
- [00:27:31.520]Have you guys heard of him?
- [00:27:33.780]Well,
- [00:27:37.440]I met up with him, and he was
- [00:27:38.950]helping me set up my website.
- [00:27:40.720]And we met up together, and he
- [00:27:47.860]started
- [00:27:48.440]to set it up, and it just didn't
- [00:27:51.080]look like a kid's website. So
- [00:27:53.640]my mom helped me set up, set it
- [00:27:56.240]up
- [00:27:56.440]instead. We worked together and
- [00:27:59.720]made it look more like a kid's
- [00:28:02.410]than more like an adult's
- [00:28:04.770]website.
- [00:28:07.420]So when you say you first
- [00:28:09.630]started with Christian, is he a
- [00:28:12.380]web designer locally,
- [00:28:14.400]or do you know where he's from?
- [00:28:16.740]Does he have a business name?
- [00:28:19.100]He helps with billboards,
- [00:28:21.760]websites, and other things like
- [00:28:25.020]that. Actually, I just
- [00:28:27.880]contacted him
- [00:28:28.560]again, and he got me on a billboard
- [00:28:31.460]in, you know, the billboards
- [00:28:34.060]that change the TV ones. He got
- [00:28:37.340]me
- [00:28:37.400]on one of those. It actually
- [00:28:39.940]started with my mom trying to
- [00:28:42.390]get stuff on for her business.
- [00:28:45.160]Well,
- [00:28:45.880]not her business, but her
- [00:28:47.290]company she works for, Grow
- [00:28:48.830]Nebraska. I mean, not Grow
- [00:28:50.440]Nebraska,
- [00:28:51.200]Nebraska Strong. And he helped
- [00:28:53.810]me with that, too. He's like,
- [00:28:56.270]while I'm getting you on there,
- [00:28:58.820]I might as well get Madison on
- [00:28:59.950]there. Good deal.
- [00:29:07.380]Do you have any other questions
- [00:29:08.950]for us, Madison?
- [00:29:10.040]I don't think so. Do you guys
- [00:29:12.210]have any other questions for me?
- [00:29:14.880]I don't right now. I think it's
- [00:29:17.630]awesome of what you're doing.
- [00:29:20.400]Do you have plans to continue
- [00:29:22.980]with
- [00:29:23.240]this? You've been at this now
- [00:29:25.050]for three or four years. You're
- [00:29:26.860]getting to the point where it's
- [00:29:28.700]probably going to be turning a
- [00:29:30.100]bit of a profit. So do you see
- [00:29:31.500]yourself doing this long term
- [00:29:33.380]then,
- [00:29:34.020]Madison? I don't see me doing
- [00:29:36.360]it for the
- [00:29:37.360]rest of my life. I want to go
- [00:29:39.630]into doing something as a nurse.
- [00:29:42.370]And I always have wanted to.
- [00:29:44.720]And it's
- [00:29:45.900]torn me deciding between a
- [00:29:48.160]business and being a doctor.
- [00:29:51.560]But I think that I will go on
- [00:29:54.820]with this
- [00:29:56.080]for a few more years, probably
- [00:29:59.210]until I'm out of the house. But
- [00:30:02.450]then I have to get a job and go
- [00:30:05.380]into reality. And I'm not sure
- [00:30:06.950]if I'm going to be able to do
- [00:30:07.050]that. I'm not sure if I'm going
- [00:30:07.220]to be
- [00:30:07.340]able to do that. I'm not sure
- [00:30:07.390]if I'm going to be able to do
- [00:30:07.420]that. I'm not sure if I'm going
- [00:30:07.480]to be
- [00:30:07.680]able to do that. I'm not sure
- [00:30:07.680]if I'm going to be able to do
- [00:30:07.690]that. I'm not sure if I'm going
- [00:30:07.700]to be able to do it. Because
- [00:30:09.890]this won't sustain me for when
- [00:30:12.030]I move out. I don't have enough
- [00:30:14.670]profit for it.
- [00:30:16.020]The good news is, is you've got
- [00:30:18.250]the backbone for it. So I think
- [00:30:20.480]you'll be doing well in the
- [00:30:22.330]future, even if you choose to
- [00:30:24.580]go out on your own again for
- [00:30:26.300]something else. We appreciate
- [00:30:28.600]you coming by and talking to us.
- [00:30:31.020]Thank you for having me.
- [00:30:33.360]Thanks, Madison. Good job.
- [00:30:35.600]Thanks, Madison.
- [00:30:37.320]Great job. Really proud of you.
- [00:30:39.380]Good, good work.
- [00:30:40.560]Thank you.
- [00:30:41.820]Thanks for speaking to us.
- [00:30:45.380]Anybody.
- [00:30:49.980]So Madison, if you want right
- [00:30:51.620]now you are able to just go
- [00:30:53.000]ahead and hang up. You don't
- [00:30:54.660]have to stay on the call. But
- [00:30:56.320]thanks again you enjoy your,
- [00:30:57.920]your Thanksgiving holiday and
- [00:30:59.630]the rest of your holiday season
- [00:31:01.340]and please stay safe.
- [00:31:02.860]You guys did too.
- [00:31:04.360]Thanks, Madison.
- [00:31:07.300]Bye.
- [00:31:08.300]Bye.
- [00:31:08.340]So now we just need to figure
- [00:31:12.220]out how to bottle that up and
- [00:31:16.200]introduce that to every
- [00:31:17.770]community, right?
- [00:31:19.300]Right.
- [00:31:20.360]I don't think I would have even
- [00:31:22.130]known how to even start a
- [00:31:23.550]business at 10 years old. I
- [00:31:25.540]mean, that's amazing.
- [00:31:28.520]So I do have a little bit of
- [00:31:30.920]news in that department.
- [00:31:33.620]And by the way, I did try and
- [00:31:35.930]get a hold of.
- [00:31:37.300]Boaty in Cheyenne County, and
- [00:31:40.300]his home situation is awful.
- [00:31:43.720]And so there was no way to
- [00:31:45.360]contact him. So I felt really
- [00:31:47.530]bad when I found out some of
- [00:31:48.840]the details.
- [00:31:49.820]So he's just not available to
- [00:31:52.120]join us. But then I watched a
- [00:31:54.380]little session by some of our 4-H
- [00:31:56.430]educators. And, you know, we
- [00:31:58.810]talked about the Goose Chase
- [00:32:00.830]app.
- [00:32:01.400]Well, Nebraska 4-H has
- [00:32:03.530]purchased that.
- [00:32:05.160]One of our, one of our.
- [00:32:07.280]One of our groups, and it's the
- [00:32:08.590]Yibo, the youth
- [00:32:09.340]entrepreneurship
- [00:32:10.220]group within 4-H Extension. And
- [00:32:14.050]so they, they have purchased
- [00:32:16.060]the app and they have created
- [00:32:17.690]several games
- [00:32:18.700]that are based around
- [00:32:20.320]entrepreneurship. So
- [00:32:22.680]communities can do this or
- [00:32:24.460]schools or
- [00:32:25.460]any, all you got to do is if
- [00:32:26.920]you're interested in this is
- [00:32:28.530]call your local 4-H educator or
- [00:32:30.780]assistant and say, what about
- [00:32:32.770]that Goose Chase app?
- [00:32:37.280]So I would say that's the thing
- [00:32:39.570]that I didn't know until just
- [00:32:41.040]this week. And I was really
- [00:32:42.590]excited about doing that
- [00:32:44.540]because it's all set up and
- [00:32:45.290]ready to go. And it's, it's a
- [00:32:46.520]little bit flexible. So you can
- [00:32:48.380]Structure it so that it syncs
- [00:32:51.450]up with whatever your community
- [00:32:53.800]wants to do, but it's still
- [00:32:55.820]also got feedback from it. You
- [00:32:58.090]can do it in teams or
- [00:32:59.310]individually or by family and
- [00:33:01.250]there can be no contact or some
- [00:33:03.170]contact or, you know, there's
- [00:33:05.280]just lots of
- [00:33:06.180]Variability.
- [00:33:07.260]To it.
- [00:33:07.660]So I hope you all get a hold of
- [00:33:09.270]your local 4-H folks and say,
- [00:33:11.290]what about that Goose Chase app
- [00:33:12.980]and let's do it in our
- [00:33:14.330]community. So they, they really
- [00:33:16.270]try and tie in the businesses.
- [00:33:18.190]There are, you know, challenges
- [00:33:20.290]for the students or families or
- [00:33:22.920]whoever to, to find particular
- [00:33:25.240]businesses in their community
- [00:33:27.000]and take pictures to
- [00:33:28.300]Find somebody who's got
- [00:33:31.390]business cards and and create a
- [00:33:33.390]jingle for them. There's just a
- [00:33:35.570]ton of stuff.
- [00:33:37.240]So that was the good news that
- [00:33:39.930]I had figured out here just
- [00:33:41.130]this week.
- [00:33:41.720]What's that group called again?
- [00:33:49.720]You said Yubo.
- [00:33:50.520]The Y-E-B-O and it's youth
- [00:33:54.960]entrepreneurship.
- [00:33:56.220]I don't remember what the rest
- [00:33:59.500]of it is.
- [00:34:01.080]But if you talk to your local 4-H
- [00:34:03.600]educator, they can hook into
- [00:34:05.760]that. It's open for anybody.
- [00:34:07.220]To use in the 4-H community and
- [00:34:10.620]even through the school. So if
- [00:34:13.020]a teacher wanted to do that
- [00:34:14.770]with a class, it's designed to
- [00:34:16.890]work that way as well, or it
- [00:34:18.770]can be a combination.
- [00:34:20.280]I can send out that acronym
- [00:34:25.720]after this call.
- [00:34:27.880]That sounds exciting.
- [00:34:32.920]Well, yeah, might be a way to
- [00:34:36.010]get that.
- [00:34:37.200]At least you can see how it
- [00:34:39.380]works.
- [00:34:40.260]They did a nice presentation
- [00:34:42.100]for us. And so we could see the
- [00:34:44.160]features that it has and the
- [00:34:45.390]flexibility. And I thought, oh,
- [00:34:47.170]that's, that's just awesome.
- [00:34:48.460]Yeah, I hadn't actually seen
- [00:34:50.260]what it worked like before,
- [00:34:51.990]although Carrie gave us a
- [00:34:53.490]little bit of an overview on it.
- [00:34:55.620]But haven't seen an action. It's
- [00:34:57.560]just lots of fun. And to be
- [00:34:59.260]able to get some of the
- [00:35:00.600]feedback out of that is is
- [00:35:02.180]really cool.
- [00:35:03.180]It's designed to have lots of
- [00:35:05.520]ways for folks to
- [00:35:06.940]Engage and to post stuff or to
- [00:35:10.540]interact with each other. You
- [00:35:12.630]can have races or or not. You
- [00:35:15.100]can set it for a day or a month
- [00:35:16.870]or, you know, whatever your
- [00:35:18.960]timeframe is
- [00:35:19.840]So that's really got a lot of
- [00:35:22.970]ability with it. So I'll send
- [00:35:24.510]you out a link to that here
- [00:35:25.810]after the meeting.
- [00:35:27.040]Let's see. I'm trying to think
- [00:35:35.360]in two weeks we have
- [00:35:36.820]Oh, Marla, remind me who's
- [00:35:40.080]coming on.
- [00:35:41.260]From USDA
- [00:35:43.080]Maybe Marla is not listening
- [00:35:48.300]right now.
- [00:35:50.000]But we have we're going to talk
- [00:35:51.920]about broadband USDA rural
- [00:35:54.020]development and the broadband.
- [00:35:55.560]So we talked a little bit about
- [00:35:57.200]it when Marla did
- [00:35:58.120]Roger. Roger makes. Yeah.
- [00:36:00.760]Sorry, I couldn't get my unmute
- [00:36:02.810]button.
- [00:36:03.560]Sometimes you can use your
- [00:36:06.800]Spacebar to do that you hold
- [00:36:08.880]your spacebar down it will
- [00:36:10.360]unmute you temp temporarily.
- [00:36:11.820]Anyway, Roger makes will be
- [00:36:15.120]joining us on. Is it December 2
- [00:36:17.330]is that the right date. I'm not
- [00:36:19.410]from my calendar so
- [00:36:20.380]Get all your broadband
- [00:36:22.770]questions out. I think he's and
- [00:36:24.860]there's a lot of resource right
- [00:36:26.650]now. So I'll be anxious to see
- [00:36:28.430]what what he's got for us. And
- [00:36:30.370]I think that's probably a
- [00:36:31.720]really big topic for us as
- [00:36:35.720]In the people.
- [00:36:36.780]attraction world. Otherwise,
- [00:36:39.720]how are y'all doing? I was just
- [00:36:43.720]on a call the other day with
- [00:36:45.410]our
- [00:36:45.740]economic development district,
- [00:36:47.830]and I know all of the Nebraska
- [00:36:49.540]economic development districts
- [00:36:51.620]are,
- [00:36:51.980]they got some funding from CARES
- [00:36:53.990]Act, and they're using it to do
- [00:36:55.920]mapping in Nebraska,
- [00:36:57.460]so that's really exciting for
- [00:36:59.830]broadband, too. Just go off of
- [00:37:02.480]what is out there now,
- [00:37:04.420]which is not very helpful. This
- [00:37:05.960]will give actual, they're going
- [00:37:07.500]to do really in-depth speed
- [00:37:08.910]tests
- [00:37:09.240]everywhere, so pretty exciting.
- [00:37:11.660]You know, we worked with the
- [00:37:13.510]university at Kearney to do
- [00:37:15.880]some of that
- [00:37:16.840]testing this summer. They asked
- [00:37:19.040]extension educators to find one
- [00:37:21.100]family in every county, and
- [00:37:23.100]then they
- [00:37:23.820]placed equipment with those
- [00:37:26.160]families that allowed them to
- [00:37:28.580]test bandwidth, and some places
- [00:37:31.400]I had a
- [00:37:31.860]hard time finding somebody.
- [00:37:34.420]Sheridan County, who had any
- [00:37:36.340]kind of bandwidth at all, they're
- [00:37:38.530]like, yeah, no, we use our
- [00:37:40.240]phones,
- [00:37:40.940]and it wasn't going to work for
- [00:37:42.540]a phone, so, but each of us
- [00:37:44.040]tried to find those folks, and
- [00:37:45.830]so the
- [00:37:46.200]folks in Kearney are doing that,
- [00:37:48.020]some of that, and then that was
- [00:37:49.530]a test of equipment more than
- [00:37:51.120]anything, and then they were
- [00:37:52.810]going to really ramp that up
- [00:37:54.420]and try to expand that
- [00:37:55.570]broadband testing
- [00:37:56.980]piece, and then hopefully that
- [00:37:59.150]will help us really have a
- [00:38:00.830]better feel for what are those
- [00:38:03.520]service
- [00:38:03.980]providers doing, and then
- [00:38:04.100]hopefully that will help us
- [00:38:04.210]really have a better feel for
- [00:38:04.400]what are those
- [00:38:04.400]service providers doing, and
- [00:38:04.970]then hopefully that will help
- [00:38:05.420]us really have a better feel
- [00:38:05.880]for what are those
- [00:38:06.400]mostly in those rural areas. I
- [00:38:08.200]think it will bring some
- [00:38:09.930]enlightenment, although, you
- [00:38:12.340]know, in Sioux
- [00:38:13.480]County, there's fiber in lots
- [00:38:15.120]of places, so they were
- [00:38:16.860]probably really surprised to
- [00:38:17.930]see some of the
- [00:38:18.800]speeds we had in rural Sioux
- [00:38:20.150]County.
- [00:38:20.720]I was just so surprised even
- [00:38:22.850]when, you know, we assisted the
- [00:38:25.430]company that's putting our
- [00:38:27.560]broadband
- [00:38:28.500]in right now, just asking
- [00:38:30.190]friends and family and do these
- [00:38:31.740]speed tests at your house, and,
- [00:38:33.620]you know,
- [00:38:34.380]I had no idea how low it was. I
- [00:38:36.550]mean, we all knew, but we were
- [00:38:38.280]just used to it, and they're
- [00:38:39.700]like,
- [00:38:39.960]this is what we're getting, and
- [00:38:41.720]we're paying for this. It was
- [00:38:44.010]just, maybe it'll make those
- [00:38:46.440]companies more accountable.
- [00:38:47.600]Yeah, the upload piece is the
- [00:38:50.760]part that's just killing some
- [00:38:52.700]of us,
- [00:38:52.980]especially as we've moved to
- [00:38:54.900]all this online Zoom stuff, and
- [00:38:57.140]yeah, I started testing mine,
- [00:38:59.940]and I had
- [00:39:00.440]I had 12 down, which is what
- [00:39:02.330]they said, but it was a 0.7%
- [00:39:04.360]down.
- [00:39:04.360]Like, oh, that's why I'm
- [00:39:06.150]getting bounced off of Zoom. Oh,
- [00:39:09.110]my goodness.
- [00:39:11.100]On another note, has anybody
- [00:39:14.040]had conversations with their
- [00:39:17.610]healthcare industry in their
- [00:39:19.230]hometown,
- [00:39:19.960]nursing homes? What we're
- [00:39:22.180]finding out, talking to, I know
- [00:39:24.760]Ainsworth's had problems,
- [00:39:27.100]Valentine's had problems, is
- [00:39:29.250]with the staffing and the COVID,
- [00:39:31.660]has,
- [00:39:34.340]kind of blown up things in
- [00:39:35.690]nursing homes anyway, where
- [00:39:37.310]they have to hire agency staff,
- [00:39:39.120]and I talked to the hospital
- [00:39:40.840]administrator the other day,
- [00:39:42.710]and he said, for us to get an
- [00:39:44.800]RN,
- [00:39:45.240]we have to be paying $115 an
- [00:39:47.890]hour to agency, or they won't
- [00:39:50.260]talk to us, and he says, we've
- [00:39:52.900]been,
- [00:39:53.140]we had some contracted at $85
- [00:39:55.740]an hour, and now it's like a CNA
- [00:39:58.120]at a nursing home
- [00:39:59.580]for agency gets 60 bucks an
- [00:40:01.340]hour. Now, part of that goes to
- [00:40:03.210]the agency.
- [00:40:04.320]I'm not sure what the
- [00:40:05.990]percentage of that is. So what
- [00:40:08.180]we're creating is just an
- [00:40:11.300]automatic,
- [00:40:11.740]nobody wants to go into nursing
- [00:40:13.490]and stay in their hometown.
- [00:40:15.200]They want to go someplace where
- [00:40:16.240]there's
- [00:40:16.500]COVID, where they get the high
- [00:40:17.990]hazard pay stuff, and they can
- [00:40:19.480]make, and some of these, like
- [00:40:21.150]an LPN
- [00:40:21.700]or an RN, I think gets $950 a
- [00:40:24.310]week in stipends for living
- [00:40:26.380]expenses, for their housing and
- [00:40:28.680]meals
- [00:40:29.060]and everything. And I mean, you
- [00:40:31.020]can't blame them, because they
- [00:40:32.840]can get the big bucks,
- [00:40:34.300]but it's really tough to try to
- [00:40:36.100]find CNAs, LPNs, RNs to work in
- [00:40:38.010]your local communities.
- [00:40:39.820]So I think like our local
- [00:40:42.700]nursing home in September paid
- [00:40:47.420]$99,000 in
- [00:40:49.740]agency staff alone, on top of
- [00:40:53.000]what their normal salary is for
- [00:40:55.980]their people that are working
- [00:40:58.120]there.
- [00:40:58.300]And of course, now you got
- [00:41:00.030]people working at $15 an hour
- [00:41:02.120]as a CNA, working with an
- [00:41:03.710]agency
- [00:41:04.280]that's getting $60 an hour CNA.
- [00:41:06.430]So that creates conflict and
- [00:41:08.620]stuff. So we're trying to work
- [00:41:10.840]with
- [00:41:11.080]our community college about an
- [00:41:12.590]expedited, try to create a
- [00:41:14.810]pipeline for healthcare workers,
- [00:41:17.800]and then figure out a way to
- [00:41:20.000]offer a bonus, a sign-on bonus,
- [00:41:22.800]or a retention bonus. If you're
- [00:41:25.320]here for one, two, three years
- [00:41:27.140]or whatever, you get a $5,000
- [00:41:29.680]sign-on bonus or something like
- [00:41:31.370]that.
- [00:41:31.600]And hopefully by that time,
- [00:41:33.300]they've decided,
- [00:41:34.260]they want to stay. But if you
- [00:41:36.050]haven't had that conversation
- [00:41:39.700]yet, you might check into it in
- [00:41:41.180]your
- [00:41:41.300]community, because I think we're
- [00:41:43.080]going to all find out we're in
- [00:41:44.070]the same boat. And what we
- [00:41:47.530]found out
- [00:41:47.980]is the route that we're
- [00:41:49.600]pursuing to help out retaining
- [00:41:51.850]jobs at a nursing home is a
- [00:41:53.640]forgivable
- [00:41:54.620]loan option through our LBA 40.
- [00:41:59.500]So it's kind of scary. Excuse
- [00:42:04.240]me.
- [00:42:04.240]Just real quick, I have another
- [00:42:09.120]meeting I have to be to at noon,
- [00:42:10.380]but it was great to see you
- [00:42:11.280]guys again, and I'll be on
- [00:42:12.740]again next time.
- [00:42:13.740]Thanks, Amanda.
- [00:42:15.240]Thanks, Amanda.
- [00:42:21.240]So anyway, that's just
- [00:42:23.030]something that we've been
- [00:42:24.630]working on that, you know, we
- [00:42:26.270]don't have a program for bailouts
- [00:42:30.270]and that kind of stuff, but we
- [00:42:34.220]do have some things we can do.
- [00:42:34.220]So I think we're
- [00:42:34.220]going to go out and solicit an
- [00:42:36.780]attorney's, a new attorney
- [00:42:38.460]opinion on how we can use our LBA
- [00:42:40.300]40 money. Talking to our city
- [00:42:42.800]attorney the other day, she
- [00:42:43.940]said, we can go out there and
- [00:42:45.640]shop around and find an
- [00:42:46.720]attorney that will give us an
- [00:42:47.660]opinion of what kind of what we
- [00:42:49.700]want to hear and how we want to
- [00:42:50.820]hear it. And then that way we
- [00:42:53.580]can be a little more flexible.
- [00:42:55.960]Mike, this is Star. So our
- [00:43:01.160]attorney here in Scots Bluff,
- [00:43:04.200]he actually helped the ED write
- [00:43:06.790]the guidelines for the LBA 40
- [00:43:10.200]program that they're, I guess,
- [00:43:13.550]the PowerPoint or whatever that
- [00:43:14.970]Deb has. So I'd be glad to
- [00:43:16.410]share his information with you.
- [00:43:18.540]I think he'd be a great
- [00:43:19.460]resource.
- [00:43:20.060]Is he going to let us do what
- [00:43:21.790]we want to do?
- [00:43:22.860]I don't know, but he won't kill
- [00:43:24.580]keep you out of trouble. Put it
- [00:43:26.410]that way.
- [00:43:27.220]Well, I think we've, we've, as
- [00:43:30.080]you guys know, in this part of
- [00:43:32.000]the country.
- [00:43:34.180]We have to do things a little
- [00:43:35.130]bit different. We don't have
- [00:43:36.440]all the resources that some
- [00:43:37.800]other areas have. And, and we
- [00:43:39.380]kind of get even our city
- [00:43:40.520]attorney agrees that LB 840 and
- [00:43:42.330]our economic development plan.
- [00:43:44.080]There's gray areas in there.
- [00:43:45.420]And what it all comes down to
- [00:43:47.420]is if somebody decides to sue
- [00:43:49.200]you because you did something.
- [00:43:51.180]And so, first of all, that's
- [00:43:54.290]probably unlikely, but there's
- [00:43:56.260]always that possibility. So
- [00:43:58.020]being our city administrator is
- [00:43:59.860]a lawyer who doesn't practice
- [00:44:01.620]law.
- [00:44:04.160]And so, first of all, that's
- [00:44:09.570]probably unlikely, but there's
- [00:44:15.650]always that possibility. So
- [00:44:21.300]being our city administrator is
- [00:44:27.190]a lawyer who doesn't practice
- [00:44:32.630]law.
- [00:44:34.140]And so, first of all, that's
- [00:44:39.550]probably unlikely, but there's
- [00:44:45.630]always that possibility. So
- [00:44:51.460]being our city administrator is
- [00:44:57.190]a lawyer who doesn't practice
- [00:45:02.680]law.
- [00:45:04.120]And so, first of all, that's
- [00:45:09.530]probably unlikely, but there's
- [00:45:15.660]always that possibility. So
- [00:45:21.270]being our city administrator is
- [00:45:27.150]a lawyer who doesn't practice
- [00:45:32.590]law.
- [00:45:34.100]And so, first of all, that's
- [00:45:39.510]probably unlikely, but there's
- [00:45:45.590]always that possibility. So
- [00:45:51.250]being our city administrator is
- [00:45:57.160]a lawyer who doesn't practice
- [00:46:02.570]law.
- [00:46:04.080]And so, first of all, that's
- [00:46:13.760]probably unlikely, but there's
- [00:46:24.840]always that possibility. So
- [00:46:34.060]being our city administrator is
- [00:46:34.060]a lawyer who doesn't practice
- [00:46:34.060]law.
- [00:46:34.060]And so, first of all, that's
- [00:46:39.460]probably unlikely, but there's
- [00:46:45.550]always that possibility. So
- [00:46:51.210]being our city administrator is
- [00:46:57.120]a lawyer who doesn't practice
- [00:47:02.530]law.
- [00:47:04.040]And so, first of all, that's
- [00:47:09.450]probably unlikely, but there's
- [00:47:15.530]always that possibility. So
- [00:47:21.190]being our city administrator is
- [00:47:27.180]a lawyer who doesn't practice
- [00:47:32.690]law.
- [00:47:34.020]And so, first of all, that's
- [00:47:39.530]probably unlikely, but there's
- [00:47:45.800]always that possibility. So
- [00:47:51.170]being our city administrator is
- [00:47:57.080]a lawyer who doesn't practice
- [00:48:02.490]law.
- [00:48:04.000]And so, first of all, that's
- [00:48:09.680]probably unlikely, but there's
- [00:48:15.500]always that possibility. So
- [00:48:21.150]being our city administrator is
- [00:48:27.030]a lawyer who doesn't practice
- [00:48:32.470]law.
- [00:48:33.980]And so, first of all, that's
- [00:48:39.390]probably unlikely, but there's
- [00:48:45.500]always that possibility. So
- [00:48:51.130]being our city administrator is
- [00:48:57.000]a lawyer who doesn't practice
- [00:49:02.420]law.
- [00:49:03.960]And so, first of all, that's
- [00:49:09.460]probably unlikely, but there's
- [00:49:15.550]always that possibility. So
- [00:49:21.180]being our city administrator is
- [00:49:26.930]a lawyer who doesn't practice
- [00:49:32.340]law.
- [00:49:33.820]And so, first of all, that's
- [00:49:33.820]probably unlikely, but there's
- [00:49:33.820]always that possibility. So
- [00:49:33.820]being our city administrator is
- [00:49:33.820]a lawyer who doesn't practice
- [00:49:33.820]law.
- [00:49:33.840]And so, first of all, that's
- [00:49:33.840]probably unlikely, but there's

- [00:49:33.840]being our city administrator is
- [00:49:33.840]a lawyer who doesn't practice
- [00:49:33.840]law.
- [00:49:33.940]And so, first of all, that's
- [00:49:39.350]probably unlikely, but there's
- [00:49:45.430]always that possibility. So
- [00:49:51.090]being our city administrator is
- [00:49:56.970]a lawyer who doesn't practice
- [00:50:02.410]law.
- [00:50:03.920]And so, first of all, that's
- [00:50:10.010]probably unlikely, but there's

- [00:51:33.860]And so, first of all, that's
