- [00:00:00.116]Coming up on AI in the Classroom.
- [00:00:02.285]Three reasons
- [00:00:03.119]you must teach your students about AI
- [00:00:05.472]this coming year.
- [00:00:06.606](upbeat music)
- [00:00:11.845]Hi, my name is Guy Trainin
- [00:00:13.046]and I'm a professor here at UNL.
- [00:00:14.964]And today
- [00:00:15.515]I want to talk about the three reasons
- [00:00:17.517]you must
- [00:00:18.718]teach your students
- [00:00:20.153]about AI
- [00:00:21.021]this very coming year.
- [00:00:22.105]And I know that many of us
- [00:00:24.024]do not feel fully ready
- [00:00:25.942]to teach about AI.
- [00:00:27.510]And notice I said teach about AI.
- [00:00:30.363]Not necessarily with AI.
- [00:00:32.432]I think that's an different step.
- [00:00:34.234]And that also requires more resources
- [00:00:37.554]and
- [00:00:39.072]making sure that administration
- [00:00:41.074]is okay with it.
- [00:00:41.875]That you've approved it,
- [00:00:43.176]that parents know
- [00:00:44.794]and all of these things.
- [00:00:46.046]But all of that is true
- [00:00:47.580]if you're using AI in your classroom.
- [00:00:49.616]And what I'm talking about
- [00:00:52.018]is teaching about AI.
- [00:00:54.387]So the first reason is that
- [00:00:57.006]AI is all around us.
- [00:00:58.942]It is changing the world.
- [00:01:00.360]It's changing workplaces.
- [00:01:02.095]It is being discussed.
- [00:01:03.747]Some people are really worried,
- [00:01:05.215]some people are really excited,
- [00:01:06.583]and some people like me are both.
- [00:01:08.701]I'm really worried and really excited
- [00:01:10.954]about the potential of AI.
- [00:01:12.472]So it is really imperative
- [00:01:15.241]that as kids try to figure out
- [00:01:16.943]what's happening in the world,
- [00:01:18.445]there is a formal opportunity
- [00:01:20.997]to learn about AI,
- [00:01:22.766]to learn about what it is,
- [00:01:24.451]how does it work,
- [00:01:25.835]and what might be the implications
- [00:01:28.104]for that.
- [00:01:28.505]We want them to discuss it,
- [00:01:30.023]and we want to make sure they have
- [00:01:31.925]the opportunity
- [00:01:32.792]also to talk about the things
- [00:01:33.960]that worry them,
- [00:01:35.044]the things they're worried
- [00:01:36.396]that they hear about,
- [00:01:37.564]that other people are worried,
- [00:01:39.115]and all of that
- [00:01:40.416]will make them much better citizens,
- [00:01:42.268]much better citizens in the future.
- [00:01:45.121]Because again,
- [00:01:46.372]AI touches everything we do
- [00:01:49.075]and has the potential
- [00:01:50.543]to change everything
- [00:01:51.928]that is happening in society.
- [00:01:53.646]Our job as educators
- [00:01:55.231]is, of course, to prepare our students
- [00:01:56.666]to be full citizens.
- [00:01:58.201]The second reason
- [00:01:59.752]is that
- [00:02:00.286]we are preparing our students
- [00:02:02.722]for the world of work.
- [00:02:04.340]And right now,
- [00:02:05.425]the world of work
- [00:02:06.442]has a lot of AI entering it.
- [00:02:09.145]And we must make sure that our students
- [00:02:11.998]understand where
- [00:02:13.783]and when it's appropriate to use.
- [00:02:15.502]How do you use it well,
- [00:02:17.387]and what are the limitations of AI?
- [00:02:19.522]These, of course, will change
- [00:02:21.624]and develop over time,
- [00:02:23.026]but especially
- [00:02:23.810]if you've got high school students,
- [00:02:25.278]they might be out in the work world
- [00:02:27.797]in a very short amount of time.
- [00:02:29.549]They will definitely be at university
- [00:02:31.885]before too long.
- [00:02:33.236]And so you want to make sure
- [00:02:35.054]that they're coming with ways
- [00:02:36.773]to think about the tools,
- [00:02:38.458]about the ethics
- [00:02:39.442]of using the tools, how
- [00:02:40.944]to effectively using the
- [00:02:42.478]be using the tools and all of that
- [00:02:44.697]before they have to use them.
- [00:02:47.150]And they're already being judged
- [00:02:48.501]on how they're used.
- [00:02:49.586]And the third reason,
- [00:02:50.687]and this is really,
- [00:02:52.705]really important to remember,
- [00:02:53.923]whether we allow it or not
- [00:02:55.425]allow it in schools,
- [00:02:56.759]whether we have the opportunity
- [00:03:00.413]to use it in one way or another
- [00:03:02.448]or it's completely
- [00:03:04.601]not allowed.
- [00:03:06.085]Students are having opportunities
- [00:03:08.421]to use AI supervised or unsupervised
- [00:03:11.090]because many of them
- [00:03:12.442]have individual devices,
- [00:03:13.726]and if they don't have
- [00:03:14.544]their own individual devices,
- [00:03:16.246]they do have a series of opportunities,
- [00:03:20.300]whether it is on parents devices
- [00:03:24.170]or on
- [00:03:26.539]for example, at the library
- [00:03:28.258]or wherever they may be,
- [00:03:29.576]that they have access to the internet.
- [00:03:31.611]Because we have so many devices
- [00:03:34.163]around us,
- [00:03:35.181]that means that they do have access,
- [00:03:37.617]and pretending that they don't
- [00:03:39.285]and pretending
- [00:03:39.986]they will not interact with
- [00:03:41.337]it is really not healthy.
- [00:03:43.039]So again, the main message here is not
- [00:03:46.309]that you have to use
- [00:03:48.228]AI in your classroom,
- [00:03:49.229]with kids.
- [00:03:49.729]That might be a good idea in some cases,
- [00:03:51.464]and a really bad one in others.
- [00:03:53.416]But the idea is that you have to
- [00:03:56.002]teach kids about AI,
- [00:03:57.887]and that's a topic
- [00:03:58.638]we call AI literacy often,
- [00:04:00.523]although some people don't love that
- [00:04:03.226]putting it
- [00:04:03.826]under the umbrella of literacy.
- [00:04:05.211]But the idea is
- [00:04:06.863]that kids need to know what is AI,
- [00:04:09.899]how does it work?
- [00:04:11.217]As far as we can
- [00:04:12.385]know, and obviously
- [00:04:13.703]developmentally appropriate.
- [00:04:15.505]And then what are really
- [00:04:17.240]the ethical concerns
- [00:04:18.741]that are sitting there,
- [00:04:20.326]how to think about it,
- [00:04:21.594]how to use it wisely,
- [00:04:22.729]and what are some mistakes
- [00:04:23.813]they can avoid.
- [00:04:24.981]This is always helpful.
- [00:04:26.516]This is the same kind of discussions
- [00:04:28.251]we want to have about social media.
- [00:04:30.203]We don't necessarily encourage kids
- [00:04:31.938]to be on social media,
- [00:04:33.022]but we know that they are.
- [00:04:34.724]And so as long as they are,
- [00:04:36.359]we do need to guide them about
- [00:04:39.145]thinking about social media.
- [00:04:40.913]This is the same thing,
- [00:04:42.465]and I'll see you next time
- [00:04:43.633]on AI in the Classroom.
