- [00:00:00.480]Hello, my name is Rachel Larson
- [00:00:02.530]and I'm the Assistant Dean of
- [00:00:03.810]Academic and Career Development
- [00:00:05.200]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:06.870]College of Business. Part of my
- [00:00:08.970]role is to work with students
- [00:00:10.640]and their career paths and so I'm
- [00:00:12.570]so excited to have Molly Fee
- [00:00:14.160]join us today to share a little
- [00:00:15.760]bit about her internship
- [00:00:16.920]experience. Welcome, Molly. Hi,
- [00:00:18.850]thank you so much for having me.
- [00:00:20.400]Well,
- [00:00:20.640]thanks for joining us. Yeah. So
- [00:00:22.490]let's start out by telling me a
- [00:00:24.010]little bit about you. What's
- [00:00:25.590]your
- [00:00:25.680]major? Where are you from? I'm
- [00:00:27.820]from Omaha, Nebraska. I'm an
- [00:00:29.920]international business major
- [00:00:31.200]and I have a focus in supply
- [00:00:32.520]chain management. Excellent.
- [00:00:34.320]And so our international
- [00:00:35.580]business
- [00:00:36.080]majors have to have a focus
- [00:00:37.330]area, right? So and you chose
- [00:00:38.870]supply chain management? Yes,
- [00:00:40.640]I did and I love it so much. I
- [00:00:42.370]was able to have a course that
- [00:00:44.110]really solidified that decision
- [00:00:45.920]for me. It was decision making
- [00:00:47.660]models. It is a supply chain
- [00:00:49.280]course here at the university
- [00:00:50.880]and
- [00:00:51.120]it totally changed my outlook
- [00:00:53.180]on supply chain and I've
- [00:00:54.810]learned so much.
- [00:00:55.680]And I've learned so much in my
- [00:00:56.730]time here and that course just
- [00:00:57.850]really sticks out to me.
- [00:00:58.800]Well, and I know as an
- [00:00:59.700]international business major,
- [00:01:01.190]students are required to not
- [00:01:03.200]only study
- [00:01:03.680]abroad but also do an
- [00:01:04.780]internship experience and you
- [00:01:06.460]got a chance to combine those
- [00:01:08.000]into one, right?
- [00:01:09.120]I did. So over the summer, I
- [00:01:10.880]spent two months in Barcelona.
- [00:01:12.960]I was a product development
- [00:01:14.800]intern for
- [00:01:16.080]CareerOS, which is a tech
- [00:01:18.070]startup and it's a networking
- [00:01:20.400]website that's
- [00:01:21.840]aimed at college students and
- [00:01:23.650]helping them develop their
- [00:01:24.920]networking skills.
- [00:01:25.680]So I was able to conduct
- [00:01:27.850]interviews and gather feedback
- [00:01:30.380]from a ton of students over
- [00:01:32.400]what they
- [00:01:32.720]thought of the beta testing of
- [00:01:34.100]this website. And so it was
- [00:01:35.410]really great to kind of immerse
- [00:01:37.760]myself
- [00:01:38.320]into their working culture and
- [00:01:40.240]then also gain valuable
- [00:01:41.700]experience.
- [00:01:42.720]Yeah. Well, and I know that a
- [00:01:44.450]lot of our students will
- [00:01:45.840]network or do handshake to find
- [00:01:47.520]their
- [00:01:47.760]internship. But since yours was
- [00:01:49.330]abroad, you had a little bit
- [00:01:50.630]different process for finding
- [00:01:52.000]your
- [00:01:52.240]internship. Yes. So the
- [00:01:54.030]university offered
- [00:01:55.680]a study abroad program that is
- [00:01:57.560]eight weeks long and it is one
- [00:01:59.390]course and then one internship.
- [00:02:01.680]So I applied for this program
- [00:02:04.380]and I had to go through four
- [00:02:06.820]rounds of interviews, I believe,
- [00:02:09.200]and
- [00:02:09.520]you get a list of however many
- [00:02:12.090]companies are working with the
- [00:02:14.880]university over there and you
- [00:02:16.800]get to kind of narrow it down
- [00:02:18.410]and see which fits best for you.
- [00:02:20.400]And if you and the company
- [00:02:21.920]find a mutual connection, then
- [00:02:23.750]you start your internship.
- [00:02:25.680]And so it was it was a
- [00:02:27.160]definitely unique process, but
- [00:02:29.040]it was
- [00:02:29.360]it was so great. And it
- [00:02:30.840]definitely helped me with my
- [00:02:32.610]internship search.
- [00:02:34.080]That's great. Well, and since
- [00:02:35.840]your internship had to do with
- [00:02:37.850]networking and interviewing,
- [00:02:39.520]you've already had some of that
- [00:02:40.750]experience through the College
- [00:02:42.000]of Business Professional
- [00:02:42.800]Enhancement Program courses. So
- [00:02:44.770]the College of Business has
- [00:02:46.320]what's called our PrEP courses
- [00:02:47.760]or
- [00:02:47.920]professional enhancement
- [00:02:49.170]program, which are a series of
- [00:02:50.740]four classes that students are
- [00:02:52.080]required
- [00:02:52.480]to take towards learning about
- [00:02:53.650]themselves. And then they also
- [00:02:53.940]have a series of four classes
- [00:02:54.160]that
- [00:02:54.160]learning about themselves, how
- [00:02:56.120]to find internships and jobs
- [00:02:57.800]and just kind of life after
- [00:02:59.340]college.
- [00:03:00.080]So tell us a little bit about
- [00:03:02.210]how those classes
- [00:03:03.680]have helped you not only find
- [00:03:04.770]your internship, but in your
- [00:03:05.880]internship.
- [00:03:06.560]They helped me so much. I feel
- [00:03:09.040]like it's been super helpful,
- [00:03:10.800]kind of building my LinkedIn
- [00:03:12.720]throughout the years. I didn't
- [00:03:14.400]know what LinkedIn was coming
- [00:03:15.900]into university. And this
- [00:03:17.920]course
- [00:03:18.240]totally opened my eyes to
- [00:03:19.600]networking apps and social
- [00:03:21.090]media and the power it has in
- [00:03:22.560]the business
- [00:03:23.360]world. So that was great to
- [00:03:24.530]learn. They hosted networking
- [00:03:25.890]events down in the atrium,
- [00:03:27.200]which were
- [00:03:27.600]super helpful. You get to kind
- [00:03:29.520]of talk to a ton of different
- [00:03:31.160]professions and professionals
- [00:03:33.230]here
- [00:03:33.360]in Lincoln. And a lot of people
- [00:03:34.880]I know actually were like
- [00:03:36.040]getting business cards. I was
- [00:03:37.610]getting
- [00:03:37.920]business cards. So it was great
- [00:03:39.980]to talk to so many different
- [00:03:41.690]people and get networking
- [00:03:43.200]experience
- [00:03:43.840]because I know it can be
- [00:03:45.100]something foreign to people and
- [00:03:46.900]I didn't know what networking
- [00:03:48.640]was.
- [00:03:48.800]And so this course definitely
- [00:03:50.050]helped me develop my networking
- [00:03:51.400]skills and interpersonal skills.
- [00:03:52.560]And I also was able to do a
- [00:03:56.840]mock interview with Deloitte
- [00:03:58.800]through these PrEP classes,
- [00:03:59.840]which was great, especially in
- [00:04:01.120]my senior year, kind of working
- [00:04:03.600]towards jobs,
- [00:04:04.880]post-grad and all the
- [00:04:05.720]interviews I had to do. That
- [00:04:07.170]was a big help in preparing
- [00:04:09.230]myself.
- [00:04:10.080]Excellent. And the Business
- [00:04:13.250]Career Center helps teach a lot
- [00:04:15.360]of those professional
- [00:04:16.560]enhancement
- [00:04:17.120]program courses. And I know you've
- [00:04:19.180]had some experience with the
- [00:04:20.180]Business Career Center
- [00:04:21.040]outside of the PrEP classes.
- [00:04:21.760]And I know you've had some
- [00:04:21.760]experience with the Business
- [00:04:21.760]Career Center
- [00:04:21.760]outside of the PrEP classes,
- [00:04:22.700]through the employment
- [00:04:23.520]readiness certificate,
- [00:04:24.720]which is a program for
- [00:04:25.660]international students. Tell me
- [00:04:27.230]a little bit about that
- [00:04:28.080]experience.
- [00:04:28.720]Yeah. So I was a peer mentor
- [00:04:30.190]for international students. It
- [00:04:32.490]was a wonderful experience. I
- [00:04:34.560]was
- [00:04:34.800]able to connect with a group of
- [00:04:36.660]international students and I
- [00:04:38.520]helped them prepare for the
- [00:04:40.240]career
- [00:04:40.640]fair. We practice elevator
- [00:04:42.160]speeches and I kind of got to
- [00:04:43.550]follow them along their journey
- [00:04:45.190]here at the
- [00:04:45.760]university and really get to
- [00:04:47.230]know them. And it was great.
- [00:04:48.890]They taught me so much about
- [00:04:50.300]their culture.
- [00:04:50.960]And the differences in the
- [00:04:53.520]United States and wherever they
- [00:04:54.960]were from. And so it was a
- [00:04:56.240]really
- [00:04:56.560]fun time to meet all these
- [00:04:57.940]people. Well, I love that as a
- [00:04:59.600]peer mentor,
- [00:05:00.400]not only were you helping other
- [00:05:01.970]people, but then you learned so
- [00:05:03.610]much from them as well.
- [00:05:04.800]And so it was just such a great
- [00:05:06.270]mutual experience. Yeah, they
- [00:05:08.540]were so fun to get to know.
- [00:05:10.240]They have
- [00:05:10.720]so many interests and hobbies
- [00:05:12.200]that I never would have even
- [00:05:13.560]thought of. And learning about
- [00:05:14.960]their
- [00:05:15.120]culture was super important to
- [00:05:16.750]me because as an international
- [00:05:18.370]business major, I
- [00:05:20.160]had to kind of plan on in the
- [00:05:21.850]future working abroad and kind
- [00:05:23.740]of putting myself in situations
- [00:05:25.840]where I have to learn about
- [00:05:27.420]different cultures very fast
- [00:05:29.250]and be appreciative of them.
- [00:05:31.090]And it was
- [00:05:31.760]really great to kind of hear
- [00:05:33.120]their life stories and their
- [00:05:34.530]perspectives. So I imagine with
- [00:05:36.240]your
- [00:05:36.560]internship, you had to be
- [00:05:37.760]pretty adaptable and learn
- [00:05:39.030]about a variety of different
- [00:05:40.360]cultures.
- [00:05:41.040]So what is one thing that you
- [00:05:42.700]accomplished in your internship
- [00:05:44.740]that you are just super proud
- [00:05:46.480]of?
- [00:05:46.960]Super proud of my work I did
- [00:05:48.200]over there. I really worked
- [00:05:49.360]hard during this internship.
- [00:05:49.360]I developed great interviewing
- [00:05:52.820]skills and kind of talking to
- [00:05:54.880]customers and consumers and
- [00:05:56.320]seeing
- [00:05:57.120]their preferences and then
- [00:05:58.340]gathering their feedback that
- [00:05:59.750]helped me with that. And then
- [00:06:00.960]also building reports for my
- [00:06:03.240]company and kind of giving them
- [00:06:05.710]helpful feedback that would
- [00:06:07.760]really
- [00:06:08.000]benefit their company and what
- [00:06:09.560]students actually are looking
- [00:06:11.210]for in an app and a networking
- [00:06:12.650]website.
- [00:06:13.040]So that was great. I'm also
- [00:06:14.640]really proud of myself and my
- [00:06:16.260]experience. I was able to put
- [00:06:18.000]myself
- [00:06:18.560]way out of my comfort zone. I
- [00:06:20.540]went there not knowing anybody
- [00:06:22.660]and I'm proud of everything
- [00:06:25.520]that I accomplished while I was
- [00:06:26.890]there. Well, in your company,
- [00:06:28.480]even though it was based in
- [00:06:29.600]Spain, you had a very like
- [00:06:31.850]world and international co-worker
- [00:06:34.930]set. So where did you, where
- [00:06:36.960]were people
- [00:06:37.360]from that worked there? There
- [00:06:38.800]was actually only one Spanish
- [00:06:40.160]native there, my boss,
- [00:06:41.360]and she was amazing. I adored
- [00:06:43.290]working with her. She was a
- [00:06:45.070]great mentor. The CEO was
- [00:06:46.780]actually from
- [00:06:47.760]Alabama. So that was nice to
- [00:06:49.580]have another American in the
- [00:06:51.370]office. So he was really fun to
- [00:06:53.440]talk to,
- [00:06:53.760]really great to get to know. A
- [00:06:55.700]lot of people were from Germany
- [00:06:58.560]and Ireland, the Middle East.
- [00:07:01.280]There was, I believe, Australia.
- [00:07:03.420]It was a total melting pot of
- [00:07:04.970]different cultures and
- [00:07:06.400]different
- [00:07:06.800]ways of working and kind of
- [00:07:08.230]communication skills. And so it
- [00:07:10.120]was really interesting to kind
- [00:07:12.100]of
- [00:07:12.320]navigate that at first, but in,
- [00:07:14.030]in the end it worked out great
- [00:07:15.490]and we all really got along as
- [00:07:17.440]a
- [00:07:17.600]team. That's great. So what
- [00:07:19.550]about the rest of your time in
- [00:07:21.140]Barcelona, the classes that you
- [00:07:22.740]took,
- [00:07:23.440]the fun stuff that you got to
- [00:07:24.520]do? What did you do while you
- [00:07:25.690]were over there? I got to
- [00:07:27.040]travel
- [00:07:27.600]a lot. I went to six different
- [00:07:29.950]countries while I was there and
- [00:07:32.170]I got to visit my family over
- [00:07:34.320]in
- [00:07:34.480]Ireland, which was great. I
- [00:07:36.660]went to Switzerland and Croatia.
- [00:07:39.060]And so I really tried to make
- [00:07:40.950]the
- [00:07:41.280]most out of the little time
- [00:07:42.660]that I had. So that was great.
- [00:07:44.420]I got to travel within Spain. I
- [00:07:46.120]went to
- [00:07:46.880]Tausa de Mar, which is up north
- [00:07:48.850]by the coast of France. And so
- [00:07:50.940]that was super cool to go see
- [00:07:53.360]different parts of Spain as
- [00:07:54.570]well. And I was able to make
- [00:07:56.170]friends with people from the
- [00:07:58.080]university
- [00:07:58.480]that I did not know before. And
- [00:08:00.030]so it was super fun getting to
- [00:08:01.400]know an entirely different
- [00:08:02.740]group
- [00:08:03.200]of people. That's so great. I'm
- [00:08:04.780]so jealous at all of your world
- [00:08:06.140]traveling. Well, and after
- [00:08:09.120]graduation here in May,
- [00:08:10.950]congratulations. So what do you
- [00:08:13.480]plan to do? So I'm graduating
- [00:08:15.730]and then I
- [00:08:16.720]leave for Barcelona. I'm going
- [00:08:19.000]back for a few weeks. I'm just
- [00:08:21.110]going to kind of bounce around
- [00:08:22.560]again and then also go say hi
- [00:08:24.220]to the CareerOS team in their
- [00:08:25.960]new office. So I'm super
- [00:08:27.540]excited
- [00:08:28.160]to meet up with them. And then
- [00:08:29.640]after that, I'm starting a job
- [00:08:31.120]at Primetime Healthcare in
- [00:08:32.720]Omaha,
- [00:08:33.280]Nebraska. So I will be starting
- [00:08:35.650]that at the end of July.
- [00:08:37.420]Excellent. So what, thinking
- [00:08:39.990]back on your
- [00:08:40.560]entire College of Business
- [00:08:41.940]experience, study abroad, your
- [00:08:43.690]additional classes, the extracurricular
- [00:08:46.000]activities that you've done,
- [00:08:47.760]what skills have you developed
- [00:08:49.540]here that you're going to take
- [00:08:51.520]into your job at Primetime
- [00:08:53.130]Health? Yeah, so I'm going to
- [00:08:55.030]be staffing and recruiting
- [00:08:56.320]traveling
- [00:08:56.800]nurses. And so it's really
- [00:08:57.940]important that I have great
- [00:08:59.030]communication skills and can
- [00:09:00.230]get these
- [00:09:01.200]nurses to where they need to be
- [00:09:02.760]in a timely manner and kind of
- [00:09:04.210]help them navigate a new
- [00:09:05.920]working situation. So the
- [00:09:07.410]college has taught me great
- [00:09:08.560]communication skills and
- [00:09:09.800]problem solving
- [00:09:10.640]skills that I'll definitely
- [00:09:11.960]need to carry into my career.
- [00:09:13.390]And I've also become an
- [00:09:14.500]extremely hard
- [00:09:15.280]worker in my time here, which I
- [00:09:17.100]thank the college for, for
- [00:09:18.710]pushing me and I was able to
- [00:09:20.320]push myself.
- [00:09:21.040]And so I'm definitely going to
- [00:09:22.460]carry those skills into my
- [00:09:23.730]future. Well, Molly, we are so
- [00:09:25.440]excited for
- [00:09:26.240]where you're going to go after
- [00:09:27.640]graduation, not only with Primetime
- [00:09:29.470]Health in Omaha, but
- [00:09:31.040]even beyond after that. So
- [00:09:32.410]thanks for being a great
- [00:09:33.600]student for us and
- [00:09:34.960]sharing your story today. Thank
- [00:09:39.810]you so much. I appreciate it.
- [00:09:44.560]Thank you.
