The annual Wheat Variety Tour was held in early June at the High Plains Ag Lab in Sidney. Dipak Santra, alternative crops breeding specialist, had winter and spring peas and camelina.

[00:00:26.400]Scottsbluff looked excellent,
[00:00:27.970]but both locations this year
[00:00:29.520]don't look good.
[00:00:30.640]Santra says the spring peas
[00:00:32.130]didn't fare as well as the
[00:00:33.490]winter peas in the trials.
[00:00:35.160]The difference is huge, because
[00:00:37.610]if you plant in the fall, even
[00:00:39.780]if the soil is dry,
[00:00:41.280]and seed can stay there, and
[00:00:43.290]they will start emerging in
[00:00:45.250]December, January, February.
[00:00:47.860]Slowly, they will soak the
[00:00:49.410]moisture, and they will be
[00:00:50.960]ready to jump in March.
[00:00:52.480]So they are in general.
[00:00:54.680]About 10 to 2 weeks earlier
[00:00:57.370]than spring pea.
[00:00:58.940]Because of the early maturity,
[00:01:01.370]they somehow manage the heat
[00:01:03.530]stress during flowering and pod
[00:01:05.340]filling stage.
[00:01:06.280]And that is the reason why
[00:01:07.470]their yield potential is higher.
[00:01:09.220]So I'm excited about winter pea,
[00:01:10.900]and that's the most important
[00:01:12.400]highlight.
[00:01:13.400]Santra says just like our
[00:01:15.090]winter wheat, the winter peas
[00:01:16.880]have a better chance of
[00:01:17.950]developing before the hot days
[00:01:19.460]of July.
