- [00:00:00.000]From heat stress to forage
- [00:00:01.670]quality, the summer months are
- [00:00:03.200]an important time for
- [00:00:04.340]optimizing cow-calf management.
- [00:00:06.400]Dr. Kacie McCarthy with
- [00:00:07.840]Nebraska Extension joins us now
- [00:00:09.630]with some guidance.
- [00:00:10.940]So good to have you with us, Dr.
- [00:00:12.390]McCarthy.
- [00:00:13.040]Let's start with the big
- [00:00:14.310]picture here.
- [00:00:15.220]Why is summer management so
- [00:00:16.850]important for our cow-calf
- [00:00:18.470]producers?
- [00:00:19.380]Yes, effective summer
- [00:00:21.140]management is critical for
- [00:00:23.170]overall animal performance, forage
- [00:00:26.000]quality, and pasture conditions.
- [00:00:28.460]And so being able to really
- [00:00:29.940]establish that effective
- [00:00:31.450]management through the summer
- [00:00:33.300]helps producers set up for a
- [00:00:34.910]successful calving season and
- [00:00:36.730]long-term success.
- [00:00:38.100]And I know we've got those hot
- [00:00:39.710]summer months right here, so
- [00:00:41.430]that heat stress is critical.
- [00:00:43.380]What are a few practical steps
- [00:00:44.910]that producers can take to
- [00:00:46.170]reduce that and the stress on
- [00:00:47.630]the cattle?
- [00:00:48.360]Yeah, heat stress can lower
- [00:00:50.320]feed intake and reproductive
- [00:00:52.370]efficiency, especially in our
- [00:00:54.570]cows and our bulls.
- [00:00:56.160]And so making sure that we're
- [00:00:57.640]providing.
- [00:00:58.460]Clean water, shade if possible,
- [00:01:00.960]and avoiding handling cattle
- [00:01:03.790]during the hottest parts of the
- [00:01:05.880]day.
- [00:01:06.380]And we can use our grazing
- [00:01:07.710]management strategies to help
- [00:01:09.360]minimize some of those stressors
- [00:01:11.130]as well.
- [00:01:11.820]Let's talk about that.
- [00:01:13.780]I mean, the pasture and forage
- [00:01:15.580]management is so important.
- [00:01:17.400]What advice for this time of
- [00:01:18.610]year on that?
- [00:01:19.360]Yeah, evaluating our forage,
- [00:01:21.450]making sure that maybe we're
- [00:01:23.320]implementing strategies like
- [00:01:25.360]rotational grazing can help
- [00:01:27.580]avoid.
- [00:01:28.560]Overgrazing, it can improve
- [00:01:30.630]pasture quality and help
- [00:01:32.330]maintain body condition in our
- [00:01:34.650]cows.
- [00:01:35.200]What role does mineral
- [00:01:36.870]supplementation and fly control
- [00:01:39.430]play during the summer?
- [00:01:41.360]Yeah, so minerals are important
- [00:01:43.490]for immune function and
- [00:01:45.020]reproduction.
- [00:01:46.220]And then fly control, maybe
- [00:01:48.620]that's through a feed through
- [00:01:51.240]product, ear tags, maybe that's
- [00:01:54.020]a spray or back rubs.
- [00:01:56.040]This all helps with animal
- [00:01:57.530]comfort.
- [00:01:58.260]And reducing disease prevention.
- [00:02:00.860]Let's talk about the role of
- [00:02:03.260]the beef industry in Nebraska.
- [00:02:06.240]I know it's very important, isn't
- [00:02:07.540]it?
- [00:02:07.800]Yeah, Nebraska is the beef
- [00:02:09.910]state, so we lead the nation in
- [00:02:12.060]commercial cattle slaughter and
- [00:02:14.340]beef exports and with 22
- [00:02:16.760]million acres of pasture and rangeland,
- [00:02:19.540]Nebraska's natural resources
- [00:02:21.520]are an ideal place for cow calf
- [00:02:21.830]production and with counties
- [00:02:22.170]such as Cherry, Custer and Holt,
- [00:02:22.630]Nebraska's natural resources
- [00:02:22.890]are an ideal place for cow calf
- [00:02:23.360]production and with counties
- [00:02:23.560]such as Cherry, Custer and Holt,
- [00:02:24.280]Nebraska's natural resources
- [00:02:25.130]are an ideal place for cow calf
- [00:02:26.040]production and with counties
- [00:02:26.960]such as Cherry, Custer and Holt,
- [00:02:28.120]Nebraska's natural resources

- [00:02:31.960]We know you guys do a lot of
- [00:02:33.330]research for our cattle
- [00:02:34.660]producers, so where can folks
